@Blueberryyymuffin2 ай бұрын
@@sO_RoNerYI own a board game where no one understood the written instructions. I played the app version and only then did I understand how to play. Sometimes board game rules fly over your head when reading them. With Wingspan I bought the app before the board game and was still very confused after the tutorial in the app. I now have the board game and want to play it for the first time, so I’m watching a how-to-play video first before I start. There is nothing wrong with not understanding instructions on a board game. The instructions in some board games are sometimes vague because the writer understands the mechanics and assumes some things are obvious to the players without explaining it clearly.

@JohnVanderbeck10 ай бұрын
@@patchdavis35 This is definitely a "problem" in many of these games, because your problem space is large and continually expanding. But as I explained to my parents last night when I was teaching Everdell, this is a good thing long term because it is what makes games "easy to learn, difficult to master". The basic mechanics of HOW to play are easy enough to learn but to be really skilled and masterful you need to expand your brain to take in this larger problem space which is where the real challenge comes in

We were under orders from our friends to bring a new game to our upcoming Easter break get together, so after some research we decided to buy Wingspan. The girl in the shop was raving about it at check out so we were pretty sure we were on to a winner. Opened the box, did some assembly and decided to "do the right (female ;-)) thing" by reading the manual and giving the intro scenario a go to make sure I actually understood (most of) the rules for this evening's test run. As I was still a bit unsure about the ins and outs, decided to watch your video and am now pretty sure that, with some additional checks on the night, I'll be able to guide us through a successful play. Not only is it well explained, but the video has close caption (for when 1-2 words are unclear - cached), and it is divided into segments that have titles. So, as you hover over the progress bar it shows you the title. You can watch 1-2 segments then come back when ready for more, and pick up with no problem where you stopped!!!

I thought that as well. I got a chance to play it a few weeks ago and found Wingspan to be an incredible game, sharing a lot of the Terraforming Mars mechanisms but playing in about half of the time. I was very surprised and am now waiting for the third printing to own my own copy.

I really enjoy your tutorials! Very clear, not too long and with a pleasant tone of voice. Whenever i buy a new game, i check your channel first and afterwards read the rules. Greetings from the Netherlands

Just got here after watching yours and Quintin Smith's 10 yr anniversary video - thanks for this one - I've only played it once with my son, & neither of us had ever played it. We got some things wrong, I see, and missed a WHOLE lot of details. My regular gaming bunch are yearning for the pandemic to be over so we can get together again. In the meantime, your videos are going to see me through this tabletop game drought! Love your site!

Hey Terry, very glad the video was helpful! Happy to help during the drought, and here's to more gaming soon!

Played Wingspan at Dice Board Game Lounge, Portsmouth, Hants, UK, on Thursday 14th Apr 2022. They ran through the instructions for us, 5 of us played it and loved it so much, we played it a 2nd time, which was great as one of our group got a high score, which went on their monthly leader board. Then I got an offer on the game on the internet and bought it. Love this game, so many different possibilities.

Oh my gosh this is SUCH A lifesaver. I didn't really understand the set up and the three different booklets left me more confused than understanding (seriously, why THREE booklets?). I'm trying to learn this to be able to teach the rest of my family and this is incredibly helpful thank you
