It’s so unfortunate that Jim Peck never got a bigger role as a game show host after 3’s a Crowd killed his career (wasn’t his fault) aside from other pilots and filling in for both Jack Barry and Bill Cullen on The Joker’s Wild. He is the definition of underrated. You’re doing a great job with these pilots recently, Wink. Thank you so much. ❤️❤️

Jim got a bad break as Jack Barry had planned on retiring after the first episode of Joker in 1984 and to announce that Jim would be taking over as permanent host. As it happened, Jack had a massive heart attack in May 1984 and died, and Dan Enright ended up hiring Bill Cullen to take over the reigns instead during Joker's last 2 seasons. Bill will always be my favorite game show emcee, but he was a terrible choice and fit for The Joker's Wild. Odds are it would have been only a 2 year run for Jim Peck too as by 1986, Wheel and Jeopardy were by far and away the two giants in syndicated game shows, making Tic Tac and Joker obsolete.

Jim Peck was going to be the new host of The Joker's Wild, upon Barry's retirement as host. But after Barry died, presumably Dan Enright passed Peck over in favor of Bill Cullen.

Great concept thought of as game shows were dying out in the early 90s. This gets picked up of it was say 1984... As for staying power I think the frontgame questions were def a little hard but that could be fixed Great idea but as soon as I saw 1990 I knew why this failed...90s wanted sleaze and stupid not smart wholesome fun Good show born too late :D

Another wrong answer from the show. Arsenio Hall was 31 in 1987, but The Arsenio Hall Show didn't premiere until 1989. This show was taped in 1990. Another rip off for a contestant. Kinda shocking.

Jim Peck was the only "ace" in this rather poorly shuffled deck of cards here. The game, with a few little tweaks, might have made it. The card dealer was okay. She could stay. My biggest gripe was the contestants, one in particular. The vibe I got from them is that they didn't seem genuine. Despite all of that, I'd like to thank you again, Mr. Martindale, for another golden nugget of history.
@markschildberg16674 ай бұрын
Of course they weren’t genuine. This is a pilot. They were actors.

Jim Peck's game show career was going pretty steady...then 3's a Crowd sent it straight off a cliff. Too bad he never found a long-term permanent gig, save for when he was pegged to replace Jack Barry on The Joker's Wild. I always thought he was a very underrated host.
@marcpower416711 ай бұрын
That was such rough luck on Jim's part, if Jack had survived, Jim would have taken over on the joker's wild. Now I do think Joker was starting to lose momentum once jeopardy & wheel debuted in syndication. But with Jack still around producing, I think he would have done enough to extend the run a little longer.

i think the writers got it wrong: MASH had 256 episodes, Bewitched had 254. meaning he was right.
@willmack590911 ай бұрын
Kind of tricky really. MASH had 251 episodes total, but in syndication, some of the hour long "single" episodes were broken up into 2 parts "Welcome to Korea", "Bug Out", "Fade Out/Fade In" and "That's Show Biz" which were the first episodes of Seasons 4, 5, 6 and 10 respectively. There were some actual 2 parters on MASH though "Comrades In Arms" and "Snap Judgement/Snappier Judgement". So I think that may be why there is some confusion or ambiguity about that question.
@KrakenMan585311 ай бұрын
Actually, MASH had 365 episodes over 11 seasons. Essentially, one episode for every day of the year. I got it from David Reiss's MASH tribute book.
@willmack590911 ай бұрын
@@KrakenMan5853 I've never seen that book, but I own the entire 11 season series on DVD and rest assured, MASH had 251 total episodes.

it's strange that this is a 30 minute show because it feels like it took an hour. So much mechanical fluff Jim had to explain and moderate, it didn't play to Jim's strengths. The question format was nice and end game was great, but the house card mechanic ate up so much time and the double card mechanic added so much RNG.
@neumannsod11 ай бұрын
What’s RNG?

@@neumannsod Random number generation. A little adds suspense and adds value to the actions taken before the random element, a lot drains any investment from the rest of the show.

This was a decent game... as always, Jim Peck is the lovable and consummate professional host. The set was certainly a technical marvel for its time as well. The gameplay, however, could have used some pretty significant tweaks to make it a bit more exciting. I'll grade this one a B-. If they would have had more time to tweak things and shoot a second or third pilot, it's possible that this could have been picked up for syndication, but most likely never aired during coveted time slots.
