I cannot thank you enough for uploading this video. I have been looking for it for years. The first time I watched it I was in the TV lounge at the hospital with my mother who would pass away two days later. To say I was a mess is an understatement. This April Fool’s joke and John Davidson’s reaction was the last time I would laugh for a very long time. Watching it again now brings much happier memories. I almost feel bad for John Davidson watching this. I think he genuinely wondered if the show was going to be able to come back after commercial.

Many shows have pulled April Fool's pranks. This, in my opinion, has to be ultimately one of the best. I remember it well from it's original run and it is great to see it in such great quality again.

Shadoe was off filming the movie Traxx (released direct-to-video the following year), and they introduced his brother Richard on February 6 - Shadoe would be gone for four months, returning just before the end of the season (assuming the permanent bottom center square when he did). That episode, where Richard was introduced, is up elsewhere on YT.

Random bit of trivia: Clifton Davis was doing double duty as a celebrity participant this week, in a sense, as he was also a celebrity player on this week's $25,000 Pyramid on CBS. Not sure when that week of shows would have been taped either, but I'd place a good bet on around the first week or two of March. I've also noticed that syndicated fare often taped farther out in advance than their network counterparts did, so I wouldn't be surprised if this Squares week was already in the can by then. From comparing different shows' episode lists, I notice that someone will turn up as being on two shows in the same week every few weeks or few months or so (and that's besides current game show hosts who'd pop up here and at the helm of their own show) - though it's fascinating that it turns out that that lands on one of this week's Squares.

I think I remember seeing a clip from a while back where John talks about this particular episode. He claimed he didn't notice anything out of the ordinary as the "contestants" were getting ready to play the game. After one of them was pushed off the platform, they apparently had to stop tape for about fifteen minutes while this got sorted out, and so John could calm himself down and host the show like he normally would.😁

This is from 1987. (Of note: 1988's April Fools did the "switch hosts for the day" gimmick that's been seen on multiple other shows since, as Davidson switched with Joan Rivers and she hosted that day. 1989 had no April Fools since April 1 was a Saturday.)

Okay, that was hilarious. I like this new panel with Clifton Davis and charlott ray. Loved the singing segment, too. Not so crazy bout that whole start your car thing. He won it so what was that for?

That's how they did the "bonus round", so to speak, for the first two seasons - normally, the winner would pick one of 5 keys and would then pick one of 5 cars to try and start. If the chosen car didn't start, the champion held onto that key, and then would pick one of 4 cars to start the next day if they won. Rinse, lather, repeat - until either they were defeated or they picked the car that their key started. In rare cases, such as this one, the champ would go through 4 other cars and would fail to start all of them, thus the 5th win guaranteeing the car. (Oddly enough, this would be at least the second time in just a few months where this happened, the previous being in January.) But, "the whole start your car thing" was just how they did the bonus segment regardless.

For the car, they needed to do something for even a retiring champion's predetermined win; it might've been technically unnecessary, but removing it would've been worse. I'm a bit surprised, though, that they still decided to squeeze in that musical question.

This is still the ultimate game show April Fool's prank. When Henry Winkler tried to do it in the Bergeron run, it just went too long and wasn't that funny of a payoff.

John should've expected *something* on April Fool's Day. After all, he had already been the victim of a prank on the AFD episode of Time Machine (where the usual car reveal for the bonus round was greatly modified).

When you tape shows ahead of time, you lose track of the air date. This show wasn't taped on 4-1, so unless John knew the air date, and as hosts, it wasn't something we necessarily needed to know, he wouldn't have known it was April Fool's.

Some stations aired this and other shows sometimes outside of when it was scheduled to air (I remember where I was at the time, because that was an NBC affiliate that was airing NBC's morning game shows in the afternoon, if news programming pre-empted the original airings of such on the network in the morning, that station would often air an extra "Squares," resulting in "Squares" airing one day earlier than they were originally scheduled to (with the Monday show airing on Friday as a result for example).
