Can watch Wright box all day. Funny how fans consider him "defensive". Notice he is the guy coming foward the majority of the time. Stiff jab, tight guard and quick blocking.

He is defensive.. That's not even an argument. He's a boxer so he is going to throw punches, but his base/core fundamentals is defense first. Everything else is secondary..

He's a defensive genius without a doubt. Extremely skilled high guard technique. It's called turtle shell and it's very rare to see it

Notice how Wright takes the middle of the ring and simply pivots around and Trinidad just circles around. In a way Wright almost looks like he is fencing. His right jab is his sword.

Anytime Tito tried to step in range, Winky would pop him with that piston-like jab. He had an incredible understanding of range and timing. Watch how he always stays right on the "fringe" of being in range, whether backing up or moving forward. When your at that range, the only weapon you have is your jab and straight, and the only defense you need is an air tight guard; both of which Winky was masterful with. Was a really good matchup for Winky. Exact same thing with his fight against Mosley. And there was absolutely no telegraphing in his jab; that thing would fire straight out from his high guard. I've honestly never seen a southpaw vs orthodox fight so dominated with the use of the jab. Good shit.
@Vovchanchin8 жыл бұрын
Part of that jab was the fact Winky was not really a natural southpaw. He boxes in a southpaw stance but is really a righty. Same goes for Michael Moorer. Another great jab. Most lefties tend to parry and paw with the right and try and set up the straight left. Funny thing about Wright he didn't have much of a right hook though.
@Vovchanchin8 жыл бұрын
Just watch Moorer/Holyfield 1 for another southpaw jabbing clinic
@russjames70298 жыл бұрын
Yeah definitely went against the conventional southpaw tactics with the way he used his right hand. I think his jab was just so good that he didn't have to get in the range necessary to land his right hook, especially against a guy like Tito who could put you on the canvas if you tried going toe to toe. If you watch his fight with Mosley, he did some inside fighting and landed a few sharp right hooks, but they were nothing to write home about. Definitely favored his jab; and for good reason, it was the nucleus of his entire tactical style.

I’m boxing at a charity event (my first time in the ring) in December, these videos are so great to learn from. Of course, I won’t get even close to fully replicating the greatness these guys display, but just seeing it is really complimenting my training. Thanks for the videos!

What's your thoughts of copying this defense and straight punch tactic ?
@russjames70297 жыл бұрын
It was his incredible sense of range, timing, and accuracy that allowed Winky to pull this simple style off, and keeps the "average Joe" from mimicking the style. Many many hours in the gym hammering the fundamentals.

it took me 5 months to figure out how to do wrinky wrights guard properly.. the trick is, relax your hands in the gloves and dont make a fist and you can block both your head and ribs.. next, stand side ways slightly so you can withstand forward pressure without losing balance.. lean back slightly to an angle when taking punches.. sometimes leaning forward and sometimes leaning backwards.. i combine it with the slipping and its super effective.. even if i am too slow to slip the punch, the punch lands on my guard.. and punches that i dont see coming gets landed on the guard.. it took me this long to figure out the best way to take a pounding and be in the right position to fire.. great defense! highly recommended for all levels!

As someone that has trained Muay Thai kickboxing for 2 years and ongoing now(I just got back from my final class of the year lol...we had four sparring matches, one of them boxing only the other three full muay thai sparring rules which is punches, kicks, knees allowed - I often go for punches to the head and kicks to the leg and body, sometimes in the same combo/sequence, jab at their face get their guard up and attention up, slam home that leg kick on their upper thigh. Land that quite often. Makes em start limping even in sparring after a couple good kicks) I say that you cant became a fighter unless you train at a REAL fight gym. You gotta put in the time and the work. I know this isnt something beginners wanna hear....but its true. And also sparring is by far the most important....ONLY AFTER you learn the basic fundamentals from drills both defense and offense and defense should be priotized. That said, I use a tight, high guard myself. Lets take tonight for example. Me and one of my sparring partners traded in the pocket for quite awhile; he swung more than me(with hooks getting close to as tight and good as mine) but I took almost every single one of his shots on my high guard...shifted it back and forth, moved it up and down back and forth as needed to stop the shots then I'd fire back and land a hook or two hooks or two hooks and an uppercut or a straight and so on. You can land block all forms of attack, punches kicks knees elbows with the high guard. You WILL need to angle your arms/guard to stop punches often enough just keep it in relatively the same position(both hands high in front of your face but also pressed against your face, I keep mine at eye level and look at my opponent through the slits in the guard ESPECIALLY when Im at close range. It works quite well even at giving me enough vision to stop all punches and all the kicks I usually see. Has some disadvantages but I can go long guard or go more loose or just clinch if I need room. Anyways my friend, practice practice practice is the key here to get good at fighting. And you MUST be a member of a legit fight gym; whether its muay thai, boxing, mma, or whatever. It must be legit. My own coach is a world champion; so is his assistant coach, who I directly train with/spar the vast majority of the time. These legit gyms cost money, I spend $100 a month on gym fees....but it sure pays off. Brawling with your friends in your backyard without proper equipment(or even WITH proper equipment or hitting the punching bag is NOT legit training)...just keep that in mind. You cant "learn online" you can suppliment your training with the stuff you learn online; watching technique videos and using it in class sure. But you cannot substitute internet videos for class, you gotta be in there sweating building that muscle memory. Best of luck to all aspiring fighters out there! Btw never join a place that doesnt allow head shots. Also, never join a "karate" school or a "kung fu" school. Its supposed to be about fighting not eastern mysticism. So join Muay Thai, or Boxing, or dutch kickboxing. Cheers!
