I finally got to finish my video on Winlink, Global email system over RF. Using nothing more than a cheap VHF handheld, you can send email over radio waves, or, over HF across the world.

I have successfully connected to several Winlink VHF stations in my area with a 2013 UV-5R and a Mobilinkd 2.2 with the latest firmware upgrade. I'm not sure if the upgrade helped or tweaking the settings improved the connection; or both. I tried the Btech TRRS to HT cable which I assume has a couple of mini transformers or resistors inside, but the VOX on my HT would continue to transmit for about three seconds after the sound stopped. This renders it difficult with APRS and useless with Winlink. The other problem I have with the UV-5R is it can transmit to stations 10 miles away with a Harvest style 1/2 wave telescope, but the receiver sensitivity is so weak, that it cannot receive data from the same stations. It tends to work better with a Tram 1180 on the roof of the truck.

I tried it with a Kenwood radio and a mobilink TNC 2. With the Kenwood it worked perfectly, but no matter what I tried with the settings, I couldn't get it to work with the TNC2. APRS works great with mobilink, and I confirmed that it was sending and the modulation was good. But Winlink for whatever reason won't work with the mobilink TNC.

I purchased a mobilinked TNC after watching this video. I have copied all of your settings. I have another HT set to the same frequency so I can listen to what is happening. When I open a session, I can hear both radios communicating and handshaking just like the beginning of your video. Then, the Winlink goes from connecting to disconnected. In the log after 5 attempts, it says Error indication: K - FRMR received. There are two different com ports that are created when I pair the TNC. In bluetooth settings, it says one is incoming and one is outgoing. Do you have any software modems installed or did you have to make any changes to the default settings in windows? Any help you can give is greatly appreciated. The mobilnked works great using aprs droid. I have tried several radios all have the same result.

Question. When I check Device Manager, I see two Com Ports connected to bluetooth. How do I know which one is the right one to use? If I choose one, it doesn't even try to open the port. If I choose the other, it opens and tries to connect, but never keys the radio. I know it worked using a Raspberry Pi and PAT.

I am about to buy a Kantronics 3+ from a friend, but would rather run this from my go box so I can use my tablet off the 12 volt instead of needing ac to charge my laptop. Reid Tillery the tnc essentially just sends audio to your radio. So it connects to the mic and speaker plug. You just need to figure out wiring and maybe PTT/VOX settings. Nearly any 2m FM can be used for APRS. Hope this helps. 73 DJ6KR

Eric, I’m new to HAM radio, but I have a question, when would someone need to have a mobilinkd? If my phone has GPS isnt’ that all I need (and the software of course) or are you saying GPS won’t work when cell towers are down and the mobilinkd will work?? I appreciate your videos, they are very helpful.
@HamRadioConcepts
@HamRadioConcepts 5 жыл бұрын
GPS comes from satellites, so if cell service is down, GPS should still work. Mobilinkd is what makes the phone speak radio language over the air. The GPS part of it is for position reporting over the radiowaves. The radio has no way of knowing where you are (unless it is a radio with built in GPS) and the phone has no way to transmit on RF. The mobilinkd brings it all together.

HamRadioConcepts Understood, but I’ve seen other videos where they underlying suggestion is that if you connect an android phone with a custom cable to your UV-5R, the app will “talk” to the radio directly, in other words it will make the “modem” like sounds. It my head that makes sense because I can connect my phone earphones, which also have a mic, the the aux on the phone can send and receive sound. All this just to ask, couldn’t we just connect the phone to the radio and use an app? I guess I better quit asking and start experimenting. If you know the answer let me know, otherwise, I’ll report back to you once I find out.

@@oscararmendariz4188 The short answer is that the TNC will do a better job. Think back to the late 70s and early 80s when a telephone hand set was placed into an acoustic coupler to drive a modem. That is very similar to what you are doing with the cable between your Android phone and your Baofeng. It works, but it won't be as capable as the TNC which is likely to be more reliable, more resilient against interference, and as a result it will get the job done quicker. I experimented with a direct cable too. It was fun, but now I use the Mobilinkd.

OK, I have had the Mobilinkd for quite some time now and always had to use an old serial TNC for Winlink and switch to the Mobilinkd for APRS to use the same radio and tablet. I have always told Mobilinkd owners, on the Mobilinkd FaceBook page, that they cannot use this for Winlink. Then I saw this video and tried it again, using all the settings that you show us. I never got it to work, using the same port that I connect to when running the Mobilinkd configuration application. I repeat, using all the settings that you have shown in the video. Winlink even says that it was able to initially connect to the serial port to initialize it, but when it tries to use that connection, the blue light stutters, never indicates a connection, and goes back to fast blink.

@kd5you1
@kd5you1 3 жыл бұрын
Whenever you use packet you need to have a modem in the chain between the computer and the radio. TNCs like the Mobilinkd basically are modems, but you can also use a Kantronics TNC, or you can use something like a Signalink with the UZ7HO Soundmodem software running on your computer. It isn't possible to simply select the soundcard in Winlink and have the radio transmit that audio out to another station because you need something to convert the audio "data" that is transmitted or received by the radio into data that the PC can understand.
