At long last, Winners & Losers has returned! Finally it's time for CITIES, after many years of comments suggesting it as a topic. This one was surprisingly difficult, given how loose the definition of a city can be, and the inconsistencies that this causes.

I think one thing was wrong though. In Safest cities, he didn't go by crime rate but by some Safe Cities Index including "digital security, environmental security" etc. Etc. Most people when talking about safety mean "Am I going to get shot robbed or beat up?" I believe cities in the Gulf are the safest by this criteria, like Dubai, Riyadh, etc. Since basically every citizen is wealthy and every non-citizen gets deported upon suspicion of a crime so the crime rate is really low

Tokyo might be over crowded to hell , but its such a beautiful and efficient city, its like one of the most perfect big cities there is. Im so sad as an American that we cant even have infrastructure in big cities as advanced as Japan, Korea and China. Proper structuring, effective crime reduction, effective cleaning programs and public transportation that links smaller areas to larger hubs, takes years to get even a fraction of any of that over here

0:15: 🏙 This video discusses the challenges of comparing cities and the different ways to define a city. 3:32: 🌍 The video discusses the concept of the lowest population cities and the exceptions for city-states and capital cities. 7:10: 🌍 Bangladesh, Tanta (Egypt), and Macau (China) are among the most densely populated cities in the world. 10:55: 💼 New York City is ranked as the top global city due to its financial capital, cultural significance, and research facilities. 14:11: 🌍 The highest homicide rate in the world is in Tijuana, Mexico, with most crimes occurring in rough neighborhoods. 17:57: 🌍 Australia has the most entries in a small town in Kazakhstan, the least polluted capital cities, and the most livable cities in the world. 21:37: 🌍 Asian cities dominate the rankings for best airports and public transport, with Tokyo's Haneda airport and Hong Kong's transit system leading the way. Some of the sources raised eyebrows, especially the ones that discuss public transportation. I personally lived in Tokyo, Hong Kong, and Toronto. Also go to NYC and London quite often. I disagree with how they say HK has better public transportation compared to Tokyo but still understand it. But Toronto better than Tokyo for public transits ? That’s just not gonna be true in 100 years.

Tokyo suffers because of closing very early (New York is 24/7 for a decent amount of the network), and having a segmented network. In terms of actual connectivity Tokyo is second to none, but that’s not the only measure of excellency for transit.

Considering he said it has a population of 37 million, he's including all of these prefectures in his definition of Tokyo: Tokyo, Kanagawa, Saitama, Chiba, Tochigi, Gunma, Ibaraki, Yamanashi. Just a heads up, Pateros is legally not a city, but a municipality, though could become one legally. There are laws and criteria for how a municipality should become a city, this includes the balance of: Land, Population, and Economy, likewise this criteria also suits for the creation of Provinces, Municipalities, Barangays (barrios), and other formal and informal divisions. I just feel like Pateros falls on the economy part though. It is also the smallest in terms of land, somewhere in between 1-2 km2.

Russian, from Moscow here. The "top 5 safest cities" is particularly funny in omitting mine. A Canadian here, in the comments to a urban cycling related video, once admitted he only had 5 bicycles stolen in his life, which he consideres lucky and safe. Just to let you know: i got no bicycle stolen whatsoever. I'm constantly doing crazy things like forgetting to strap on my bike to a pole for couple hours, leaving my gopro just hanging in the wardrobe, leaving the car unlocked and sometimes running (i.e. with they key in) unattended. Never once got anything stolen*. The covid delivery boys on those chinese e-bikes - even they let them unchained for 5 minutes they need to go inside and get the order to the appartment door. Just to give you an idea of what a safe city is like. * - Almost fergot. Ok, 20 years ago my mom got her car hijacked, and 10 years ago another unsuccessfull attempt.

An important thing to remember when it comes to cities with the highest homicide rate is that they are all from country's with a police force developed enough to take down such data. Cities like Mogadishu, Damascus, Baghdad, etc. would be much more dangerous as a whole.

Fun fact, more kangaroos live in Australia, than humans do... even though that is counting the total population of 4 species of kangaroos and combining them together, while there is just one human species. In total, there are 26 million humans and 46 million kangaroos, that live in Australia.

For such a small country (population wise). Australia definitely impressed in a lot of these.

I’m surprised that we didn’t feature more in the livability rankings. A few years ago there were a number of rankings that would switch between Sydney and Melbourne for the top spot.

@@lamsmiley1944 Most of those liveability rankings hammered Melbourne and Sydney due to COVID and Australia's lockdowns hahah give it another year and Melbourne will likely be up the top again

In my unbiased opinion I think Melbourne is the most based city to ever exist This post was made by the Melbourne gang

To be fair, a lot of the Australian cities in air quality were small towns of 500 in Tasmania.

I’m more surprised about Japan. Their population is pretty large when comparing to European countries but still consistently ranks amongst the best in rankings. Pretty insane if you ask me.

If you do another episode, I think it'd be cool if you compared 'territories' of the world; things like Puerto Rico, BIOT, Norfolk Island, etc. Basically, places that aren't considered to be countries, but aren't full parts of whichever country they're in They can be interesting little (or big) things and it seems like a topic that may fit well with Winners and Losers

As someone who used to live in Toronto, I have a hard time believing that it's the second safest city in the world lol. I was under the impression it was the least safe city in Canada, though that might just be in terms of murder rates.

I was surprised to see it at 2nd as well, but what you thought about it relative to Canada is a misconception that so many Canadians have. Toronto is nowhere close to being the most dangerous or least safe city in Canada in terms of crime or murder specifically, whether it's all towns and cities or just major cities. Most of those places are out west. And for Ontario, it's up north.

I guess it's all a matter of perspective. Maybe you Canadians see Toronto as being a dangerous city, but as an American, I'm shocked that major cities can even be that safe.
