That Nintendo tournament wasn't necessarily fair at all. By the final 16, the skill level and matchups against Heeew seemed to take a nosedive, because the majority of good players were weeded out by item RNG. So for Heeew to consistently perform in a maelstrom of luck, he'd need someone like Richter to safely read and punish people reaching for explosive items and Final Smashes. Gap-closing characters, who are Richter's counter, got weeded out. So then it became just him and his B-moves against Regi, the only other competent player in the final 16. (Regi probably took care of an itemless counter for Heeew, too.)

I can see why Nintendo wants items in the tournament. It's one of the things that makes it different. Nintendo wants to show off the stuff that makes it unique to other fighters. And if you're good enough, you can win with or without items.

Well yeah, you _can_ win. Items just means you can also easily win if you're not good. Full items invalidate most of the roster and turn it into a clown show where none of your kills come from actually using your character. Partial items isn't _as_ bad, but you still randomly die super early into a stock in a way that could very easily hand a victory over to the less skilled player. Bombers were on, which means that almost any attack could hit one that suddenly spawned in front of you and kill you at 40%. Just for example.

To be honest, items and comepetitive can exist at the same time. If you have doubt, highly recomends watching JP official league. Tons of talented players such as zackray, Shuton, KEN, Abadango and Hikaru are enjoying and showing us hype item matches. Their high level item meta is really interesting to watch. It's 100% true that E3 ruleset was garbage though lol Anyway congrats on winning :)

I like the positive outlook, but you have to remember those guys basically don't have a choice regarding competing with the items. Sure, they could not enter, but as a professional gamer it's not exactly a smart choice.

Eh they give people a huge advantage and those are the fights competitive people don't like to see. A skilled player will dominate, and the less skilled will close the gap with their pet rathalos. It's the same reason steroids are looked down upon and illegal.
