I loved it when Norm, and Magic played together. Having two point guards was super. Get the rebound, and give it to either one, and away we go. They both could lead the fast break. Loved it.

Glad to have seen this interview with Norm Nixon. It's not too often we get an opportunity to hear from him out of all of the Showtime era Lakers. Often overlooked and underappreciated. And probably would have been a Hall of Famer but for his injuries. And I have to agree....I think the 84 Finals possibly would have turned out differently if Nixon hadn't been traded and McAdoo was healthy. Hope we can see more Norm Nixon interviews in the future.

Only if that meant magic sat the bench.. the reason they lost that series was magics performance ...dribbled the clock off on game 2 choked at the ft line in game 4 and was definitely not mr clutch in game 7 either...

It's just annoying because they could have made it correct and it actually would have been more interesting. Like Jerry West for instance. If he was just shy and quiet and totally stoic, his depression would be just as interesting as the outbursts he has in this show. Jerry West is a fascinating person with a really troubled upbringing. There's plenty of "Hollywood" and "drama" in his life. They could have made a much better Dramady type show around his mental health and it would have been way better. I love basketball and will watch anything basketball related. It's just kind of absurd to me that they botched this show. It was such a great idea. The casting was pretty good and they actually hit on a lot of the characters correctly, they just totally botched Jerry West and he's kind of the central piece that makes the show work. Like I don't think people realize that showtime came out of spite for the depressing and crushing failure that was the better part of Jerry West's career. They kind of gloss over that as if it's not the underlying theme. Guys like Kareem and West need more airtime and you need to see the torment they were under. The pressure they were under. And how Magic and West came in with a positive attitude and really turned around an organization that was tormented. Whether that torment was Civil rights issues that irked Kareem and depressed him to his core or The failed career and physically abusive upbringing of Jerry West. Those are two interesting and very really characters. Instead they try too hard to make the show funny. Let Magic and Buss be the comic relief. Let West and Kareem bring the seriousness to the show. Just could have been so easy to do a spectacular dramedy around this franchise yet they chose to focus too much on making it a time piece for the 1980s and fill it with corny monologues and what not. Feels like an 80s buddy cop movie between Magic and Buss more than it does the actually Hollywood drama of a show like Vinyl.

Scripted Tv and movies "Based" On Actual Events Are Never Completely Accurate. That's what A Documentary is for. And even those tend to be slanted to particular point of view. Its for Entertainment purposes with a little facts Sprinkled in. Please dont go to a tv show or a movie based a actual event for complete facts. However shows like Power and Raising Kainan that you make think are Completely made up are actually based on real people and events. Names and situations are changed to protect the guilty.

I never knew Norm Nixon was from GA. When I was going to college in Pittsburgh in the 70s Norm Nixon who was an all-american guard at Duquesne was Pittsburgh's favorite son. He was legendary in Pittsburgh even after he finished his college career and went to the NBA. That was quite impressive given the fact that there were other star athletes playing pro and college sports in Pittsburgh at that time. In terms of legendary status he was right up there with Tony Dorsett, who was indeed a born and bred Pittsburgh area native. I wholeheartedly agree with Norm that the NBA's one-year-and-done policy has killed the game at the college level in particular, but also at the pro level. And in the old days it was very much a team game, but now NBA teams merely look like a collection of playground basketball players who play the game like they're trying to hog the spotlight solely for themselves. I rarely watch basketball anymore - or any sport for that matter - but I've enjoyed watching Winning Time so far. Brings back old memories...reminding me of how much I despised the Lakers and their glitzy stars for getting the better of my beloved Boston Celtics in those Magic-Bird rivalry years.

I also know that the only reason anyone would want to hear from these two journeyman, forgettable players about what they did 4 decades ago is because of the HBO mini-series. And since Hollywood adds in stuff that didn't even happen, it's only through talking to folks that were actually there that we can tell what was real and what is made up. It doesn't do us any good if the folks who can give us those answers don't even bother to take a look at what was put out on the air via HBO. @@pjpredhomme7699 clean out your ears and start at the 5 minute mark....he never said what you just said at first....he literally said if you wasn't Kareem you wasn't coming in and changing a franchise around sir....then he contradicted himself by saying something totally differently in the next breath.....

Norm and Coop were the only 2 I liked back in the day (as a Celtics fan) now....much later in life, you can see how The Lakers and The Celtics were built from the same thread..JUST WIN

Good interview with Norm. I wish you guys had asked him more about playing for the Clippers. Maybe a little about how Sterling was as an owner. Lakers typically hated the Clippers so how did he feel being traded to that team? Can a healthy Kawhi Leonard & Paul George the Clippers duo past the Western Conference Finals?

The show is entertaining on HBO but you have to watch it realizing that most of the scenes probably never took place.

Norm, Larry did exactly that for the Celtics. In comes Larry, 29 wins become 62 wins

Stormin Norman was one of my favorite players and I truly hated Maxwell but it’s so good to see him doing this podcast with Nixon and to see that he’s doing well. I have so much more respect now for the Celts than I did back then because I’m a die hard Laker fan… well at least before Lebron.

Norm must not have heard the Celtics went from winning 29 games the year before Bird was drafted to winning 61 Bird's rookie year.

@@NBAHistoryCLNS Go back to the 4:50 mark and start listening. Norm says unless you're adding a Kareem or Moses a team is not going to have a massive turn around. He was referring to the addition of Magic not being a huge "game" changer, but Larry did just that for the Celtics as a rookie.

Norm was my favorite. Magic became my all time favorite but while they were together Norm was my favorite. Went to his camp in 1980 and he made my day when he spotted me walking across the court and as cool as they tried to portray him in Winning Time told me "Quit walking like you strutting".

OMG, a Celtic legend Maxwell asking his arch rival Laker legend Nixon why he got traded ? These two guys were fierce rivals in the day.

Kinda disagree with you Norm, small ball schemes (scoring pgs, volume 3s, spread floor,) proved that you could win a chip in today's game. Exposing the perimeter mismatch is the main the reason the back to the basket 5 is extinct.
