There’s a hundred Paul Westheads in the NBA that you can put on. Players like Magic come along once in a generation. Once Westhead put the organization in a position where they had to pick between a coach and their headliner, it was a no-brainer.

This was maybe my favorite episode of this season. Love the chaos and the humanity in the scenes. Great acting by Brody, Isaiah and Segel. That press conference scene reminded me of the chaos when Magic left the Lakers when he was recently the GM. Lakers and the Buss family meaning so much to him, but realizing he was not enjoying the GM job (also that he was a bad GM, though he never really admitted it). Just saw the Rock the Bells show at the Kia Forum on Sunday and was envisioning the Lakers playing there and what Showtime was like. Thanks for the great analysis and look forward to more of this show and your breakdowns!

9:30 50% players 25% coaching 25% front office The Last Dance was the perfect example of this. As a Bulls fan Kruse wanted too much credit, Jerry Krause put together a championship team in 1989 but didn’t have the right coach so he got Phil Jackson and the Bulls almost made it to the finals in 1990 but Pippen didn’t play in game 7. It wasn’t until 1991 when the players finally matured and won a ring

like I've said in other posts, Paul Westhead was better suited for college than the NBA. Even though Magic is college-age, you can't treat him as such. And for the talent on the team, it's not a one-size-fits-all.

Segal knock this role out of the park he play's Westhead way over the top by the time hes fired I hate him that's pretty good acting. I was stocked when Magic was chosen over Westhead in real life but this dramatization is even better the idea that Magic just humbled Buss like that makes me happy. Magic the man show time Lakers baby!

I agree with you about championship teams needing great players and a great coach. I liked your examples with Phil Jackson and Steve Kerr. Also, in addition to winning titles with LA and Miami, Pat Riley took a less talented Knicks team to game 7 of the finals with only one major star in Patrick Ewing. Being a Knicks fan, I think many other coaches would have just barely made the playoffs with that team.

It's after the press conference where the show plays very loose with the facts again as they did last season for dramatic effect. They make it look like the Lakers went on some losing streak after Riley took over. But this is not the case. After the 7-4 start to the season, and the Lakers winning 5 straight with Westhead's last games, the Lakers CONTINUED winning under Riley. They went 17-3 after Riley took over in their next 20 games! For some reason the HBO writers have to rewrite history with the actual games that took place to try and work up some false drama. They did it when going over the 1979-1980 season and the first match up with Boston, which the show makes L.A. lose, but they actually WON. I say, don't mess with the realities of the schedules, right?

No, I don’t feel bad for Paul. His way wasn’t working, Magic and others tried to tell him, but he refused to listen. And once he put the organization in a position where it was either him or their generational superstar, it was curtains for Paul. Something a little like this happened to Doug Collins, the coach of the Bulls in the 80s. Doug made them winners, but he was advised to start a triangle offense to get other players involved on offense instead of just Michael Jordan. But Doug would not hear it and dug his heels in; ultimately, the team decided to fire him and put on Phil Jackson, and the rest was history.

entirely agree all your takes. The Honey plot line is getting far too much air time. I get it - they are setting. up for the births of Joey and Jesee but honestly they are all irrelevant to the showtime era and thus I think the screentime is highly unnecessary. I'm with you 1000000% - we need more little moments to really hone in on the actions & emotions of the central figures as they see all this madness unfold. Absolutely no time was spent highlighting how magic felt thru all this; just that little smirk on his face when Riley said we're going to play free. A miss IMO - that being said, still a great great episode and season 2 is absolutely killing it. Great review man can't wait to see more!
