"Magic will be forgotten in 15 years..." Famous quote from some guy who used to be in the NBA, lmfao
@bigdinlaca Жыл бұрын
First season was about Magic because the first few minutes was about his announcement, it ended with Magic being the main star. The start of this season was about Pat Riley giving that speech after game 1 of 1984 Finals. So they had to go fast for the 80-81 season and this is about the rise of Pat Riley and their 2nd championship. I’m guessing Season 3 is about the return of Kareem in 85. Season 4 about Magic being the main guy, and the rise of James Worthy during 87 and 88. Series will end in Season 5 with the departures of the main guys.

The NBA was a different monster in those days, after Jordan it seems that the franchise player can influence trades and draft picks. Yes I do agree in wishing the producers would give more attention to the on court situation especially in this series with with the Rockets, they should have shown more of Moses Malone since two years later he would stop them from a repeat again. 83' SIXERS! Besides that I love the series it's good tv. This will probably open the door for simaler stories like the Jordan Bulls, Kobe n Shaq Lakers, 90's Cowboys, 80' 49ers, and Yankees

Speaking of the Rockets, if the series had not been cancelled, it would have been interesting to have seen the rise (and swift fall) of the Twin Towers-era Rockets who beat the Lakers in the Western Conference Finals in 1986 and were seen as a major challenge to the Lakers until (1) starting guards Lewis Lloyd and Mitchell Wiggins were banned by the NBA for cocaine use in 1987 and (2) Ralph Sampson's back injury which he had suffered a year earlier at Boston Garden began to take its toll and eventually shorten his career.

I'm loving this season so far, don't get me wrong. It's very compelling and I'm enjoying the faster pace compared to the slower, more character building focus in the first one. As much as I enjoyed that first season I'm glad they've switched things up now that we know who all these guys are. One thing I did notice though was that I was so into the players side of the story that every time it switched to the Buss family narrative it took me out a little. I know I care about that side of the story but I'm so invested in Magic and the Lakers Players/Coaches now that it's all I end up caring about when I'm locked in the episode, at least so far. I definitely wanna see where the Buss family goes but idk that was just my feeling coming out of the second episode. I'm excited to see how everything unfolds next week but the players and coaches side of the drama has my attention I'll admit.

Yeah the Buss subplots are definitely the least interesting parts so far.

It was interesting to see Magic air balling that shot. Reminded me of Kobe early in his career as a rookie air balling against Utah. Seems like all great athletes (successful people) experience disappointment before reaching high levels of success

I'd really like to know more about how it was for DeVaughn Nixon to portray his own father as an exaggerated, toxic version of his actual self.

I am loving this season. This episode was very good. What you said about the mental toll an injury take on any athlete is so true. I did enjoy the Dr. Bus scenes. I didn't like the Jeanie scenes so much this time for some reason.

I agree about this episode feeling rushed. I was afraid of this given that they are trying to squeeze 4 NBA seasons into only 7 episodes. I wish I knew why this season only has 7 episodes.

There was never a trade rumor about Norm Nixon for David Thompson.

@JAWrightonline the show does say that some incidents were fictionalized. I was commenting on what took place in this episode, not the real story. Thanks for the information.

@@JAWrightonline The David Thompson trade was taken from Paul Westhead's autobiography 'The Speed Game: My Fast Times in Basketball'. See excerpt below. “The deal was all but complete, except I still disagreed. I sensed the others [in the front office] were annoyed with my dissent. But I had some strong doubts, so I said no... Jerry Buss...decided to consult Magic Johnson, who was back in Lansing, Michigan, recuperating at home. I thought it dangerous to bring Magic into a matter concerning a fellow teammate... Magic’s answer was trade Nixon... It would allow him to handle the ball all the time, versus sharing...”
@JAWrightonline Жыл бұрын
@@Red-li2ys I never said the trade wasn't proposed. However, it didn't deteriorate into a rumor. You have to know, David Thompson was coming off a very disappointing 1979-80 season. It was revealed during the off-season of 1980 that he was abusing cocaine. Why would the Lakers, who'd just finished dealing with the Spencer Haywood crisis bring in ANOTHER drama? On the other hand, I understand that this series is as much entertainment as it is a documentary. And, actually, perhaps it is best that the writers and producers didn't drag Thompson's name through the mud by bringing up his past as Thompson has been clean and sober for over 30 consecutive years.

The instigating reporter being portrayed is Mike Littwin, one of the all-time lowlife weasels in sports journalism. The L.A. Times fired his ass a year or two later and he ended up in Baltimore.

Pat Riley was wrong, honor wise.. give a muh an opportunity & he stabbed him in the back at a critical point of the season, while questioning his authority. That's some dirtbag ish, that wasn't even necessary or effective.. although, we know Riley runs the show after this. Everybody want respect coming in, the ones with honor like to dish it out. Cast is great in the show, Westhead, Kareem & Jeannie in particular.
