A street in the Sage Creek neighbourhood usually buzzing with activity is silent after some new neighbours moved in creating a buzz of their own. Neighbours tell Global News the rabble of bees started gathering on this lamp post at the centre of a cul-du-sac ten days ago.
"I have never seen anything like it especially on a lamp post. That's very unusual," Bjorn Johnson said.
According to neighbourhood residents, nobody in the area has been stung by this group of bees - but Bjorn Johnson says many parents are keeping their kids off the street as a precaution. "It's screeched the whole street activity to a halt. Usually you'd see kids having out here having fun but the bees have put a hold on that."
Beekeeper Michael Clark said this behaviour is known as 'swarming.' Clark explained that, "If they've run out of room they take off with the queen to find a new location which will suit their needs and she'll leave a daughter in place to take over the colony." Clark says the swarming process should take only a few days but if they don't move on naturally or start combing removing the swarm without hurting the colony becomes more involved.
Drew Stremick has more on what the City of Winnipeg, Manitoba Hydro and local beekeepers are doing to help transplant the growing colony to safe place.
