Being a disabled artist, I have no way to go shopping in my tiny town. I’ve been using substandard watercolors (Reeves), expecting professional results. As you can imagine, I’ve been failing miserably. I had a few colors that I bought 35 yrs ago but I’ve used them all. I’d love to enter your giveaway. Either set would be a huge improvement. My goal is to supplement my income from Social Security check so I can afford to eat every day. If I buy art supplies, I have to sacrifice. Annie in Tennessee

Literally from the first step of painting the hand I thought something was off, she didn’t use the same process on each-and professional artists such as Kelogsloops uses the cotman set for their artwork...

mainsterious 999 I get excellent results from cotman. schminke is my go to paint although I use M. Graham and Daniel Smith. cotman is great for craft fairs where I know I’m not going to sell products for a lot of money. All watercolor paintings regardless of the paint say keep out of direct sunlight. That’s the thing about student grade, it may fade over time, but I have pieces from high school that still look great.

Just wanted to give you a heads up in case you were interested... An asian watercolor would be Mission Gold or Holbein. (Asian watercolor properties tend to use less granulating pigments to avoid granulation). The Kuratake Gansai paints are actually a different medium called Gansai. It's promoted as watercolors here becsuse there is no western equivalent and they uses to be promoted as Gansai paints but as it got popular as "watercolors" they just switched to calling them watercolors about 4 years ago. Kuratake Gansai Tambi is Brand Name + Medium Name + Brand Given Name. To compare name only, Winsor Newton Cotman Watercolors is Brand Name + Brand Given Name + Medium Name. Gansai paints were originally developed specifically for use in Etegami style paintings which accounts for the different binder and properties.
@arleebean6 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for laying all of this information out! I've talked a little bit about Gansai in a different video, and I'd really like to be more informed so I can avoid using vague terms that may not be completely accurate. This is really helpful - thank you!

I really love the rainbow skin, everyone should have rainbow skin! My daughter would love one either one of these sets; she is always disappointed with the cheap chalky kids paint that people give her as gifts (not that she isn't grateful, honestly she would be happy with resturant crayons.) Now that she is a teenager, even I think she is a bit old for those art kits the stores sell around Christmas; especially since they rarely give the paint pigment content and it is a thing she is becoming increasingly interested in. I was thinking of putting some art treasures in her Easter Basket, this would certainly be a nice addition.
@FayeWulf6 жыл бұрын
Japanese paints are usually called sumi paints if thats what you wanted to remember :P I know a lot of people say WN gouache is nice but it can get very chalky despite being a higher tier set of paints - does that happen for you?
@FayeWulf6 жыл бұрын
Yes, Ive been hearing that a lot of people don't like WN gouache too because of that chalkiness. I wonder if its just a property of gouache.
@bibibibi79046 жыл бұрын
I like their gouache because of the matte texture and it works well for my style of work I noticed that working with less diluted paint should solve your problem
@FayeWulf6 жыл бұрын
Ohh, Thankyou! I havent really worked with gouache before and I also love the smooth matte finish it gives but I didn't want to commit too much money into pure gouache if I don't like how it works. I know its similar to watercolour and I have the "hybrid" version that is advertised as both watercolour and gouache but not true gouache nor watercolour that the koreans tend to make.

I love how you add in blues, reds, and yellows to your skin. I had used blues and purples as well in skin tones and it just looks really nice! Oddly enough I really favored the warm feel of the cotman hand, but really enjoyed how nicely blended the professional was. I was also shocked by the vibrancy of the Marie's gouache! It seems that some items leaning on the more professional side tend to have more subdued colors even though there's higher pigmentation. Very curious!
