Imagine the amount of relief that Churchill felt when the US entered the war against Germany.

England faced Germany alone (pretty much) for 2 1/2 years. Hearing that the U.S. would now enter the war was like someone on a life raft in the middle of the ocean who is famished and out of water and suddenly sees an ocean liner slowing to pick him up.

@@DylansPen Well, Britain wasn't exactly alone (thanks to the Commonwealth, etc.), but at very least their lives got 100 times easier. Hitler was among the biggest idiots in history to declare war on the US at the same time he was fighting both the world's largest empire and the biggest army simultaneously.

@@brianbuday8639 You guys definitely deserve more mentioning. I've heard the story of Leo Major, an insane warrior. America and Canada both had critical contributions to the liberation of western Europe, AND South Korea as well in the 1950s (the fact that the British Commonwealth nations' role in the Korean War is seldom talked about baffles me, even as an American).

@King Royal That is untrue. December 1937 an American gunboat near China was attacked by Japanese forces where two American civilians and two crewmen were killed. Before that, an American tugboat was seized by the Japanese and our American flag thrown overboard. In 1939, the British liner Athenia was sunk by a German U-Boat and 28 Americans were killed. In 1940, Japanese Air Force attacked and killed an American pilot. In 1941, a German submarine again sunk an American destroyer, unprovoked. In 1941, a Japanese submarine was spotted miles near the entrance of Pearl Harbor and was sunk as it tried to follow an American carrier through anti-submarine nets with no apparent intent to stop. The Americans had every right to sink it as it had no innocent passage protection. The Americans most certainly did not attack anyone first. Read up before spouting nonsense.

This speech is hardly known to anyone, as is the full scale of the Japanese attack on December 7, 1941. Everyone knows Pearl Harbor, but Japan on that day had attacked not only Hawaii, but also the Philippines, Guam, and Wake Island (all US colonies at the time) as well as the British Empire's colonies of Malaya, Singapore and Hong Kong.

On a technicality your incorrect, ( you are correct just not entirely) even though the Japanese attacked all American colonies at the same time, you have to remember that during the attack on Pearl Harbor in Hawaii on dec 7th, the attacks that took place on Guam, Wake and the Philippines happened at the exact same time but because of the international date lines, the attacks actually took place on the 8th Dec when it came to the Philippines, Guam, Singapore, Wake, Malaya ect

You'd think, but they lacked strategy. Hitler was supposedly giddy when he heard. He apparently greatly underestimated how much the US would bring against Germany. Also, the US joining the war on the Soviet's side, and the constant massive stream of supplies from the US, kept the Soviet people, military, and government hopeful enough to keep them from collapsing almost certainly. Once hope is gone, people start worrying about themselves more than the war effort, which puts the country at an exponential disadvantage. This happened in China and the nationalists were extremely weakened due to it.

This must have been the most daunting time of the war for the British. Still barley hanging on in Europe against the Nazis, who were now advancing across massive amounts of territory in Russia. And now two enemies without the resources to aid British territory in Asia, or India and Oceania. American assistance against the Nazis must have looked further away than ever now that America would most likely focus its efforts on Japan. From a British perspective, they could lose India and Australia to Japan, and still face an invasion of homeland Britain by the Nazis, who looked set to defeat Russia and turn its forces back on them.
@jamiewalker162

Not strictly true by this time the Russians was already pushing the nazis out of Russia and the nazis could have never invaded Britain as for one the British had a far superior navy so the nazis tried from the air wich was the battle of Britain and the British won that and defended the homeland that is why hitler turned his attention to Russia so when America came in to the war I never see it as they saved Britain I see it as they helped the British and Russians liberate Europe

I find it so interesting how delicate and precise he was in stating that the Japanese High Command had declared the state of war and NOT the imperial government, it really shows how and why Hirohito was not forced to abdicate as emperor. He had nothing to do with the war at all, Japan's contribution's to the war were completely under the control of Hideki Tojo as Hirohito was just a figurehead. I guess the United Kingdom would understand this more than most seeing as they themselves have a head of state and a separate head of government.

Actually, Hirohito was more than a figurehead. He had the authority to put a stop to what the high command did. Sadly, Hirohito was a weak spirited man and because of that people like Tojo could do what they wanted. It wasn't until the US dropped the atom bombs and the USSR invaded Manchuria that he got the backbone to stand up against high command and end the war.

To people who see this in the future, it's 11-5-2020, no one knows who won the election still, and the patriots are praying the media and big tech weren't allowed to swing the election and Trump won. Also that the democrats weren't able to cheat hard enough to win in regards to ballot harvesting, stealing, miscounting, and forging. If Trump doesn't win, the economy will go back to crap, and China will once again be booming until they can fight us on their terms rather than ours. Charles Burnham no 140,000 British empire troops were lost in Malaya and Singapore NOT 250,000 only 40,000 were actually British and there’s a lot more to it japan had tanks and aircraft we had NO tanks and terrible planes like the Brewster buffalo and not enough of them we had no naval support nothing just inexperienced soldiers whilst being preoccupied with the war with Germany and Italy. Also Britain’s greatest victory and japans greatest defeat happened under his watch at the battle of Imphal and Kohima.

@@commando4481 Wiki (I know) says the US Army had only ~31,000 troops in the Philippines when it kicked off... (which is actually less than I recalled them having) against 100,000 Japanese troops at the peak. But it took longer than a few days, and the Americans and Filipinos had to be starved out... which wouldn't have happened so quickly (if at all) if it had been only the Americans there under siege, per the original plan if the Japanese attacked. Not sure they're comparable... or at least not in a way that makes Singapore look like anything good... Even worse than Crete?

Well, Winston always had a way with the spoken word as few world leaders ever had. He went to bed that night knowing that the war would be won. We may have provided the bulk of the stuff needed to fight the war, but Winston's refusal to give in pretty much saved a lot more heartache than what was to be insured by the war. Every time I am near I go spend time at the Winston Churchill Museum and Memorial at Westminster College, Fulton, MO. They have the Iron Curtain Speech. And you can sit for hours listening to all of his speeches and jokes. And there is a chunk of the Berlin Wall there too.

"In two or three minutes Mr. Roosevelt came through. 'Mr. President, what's this about Japan?' 'It's quite true,' he replied. 'They have attacked us at Pearl Harbor. We are all in the same boat now.' No American will think it wrong of me if I proclaim that to have the United States at our side was to me the greatest joy. I could not foretell the course of events. I do not pretend to have measured accurately the martial might of Japan, but now at this very moment I knew the United States was in the war, up to the neck and in to the death. So we had won after all! Yes, after Dunkirk; after the fall of France; after the horrible episode of Oran; after the threat of invasion, when, apart from the Air and the Navy, we were an almost unarmed people; after the deadly struggle of the U-boat war-the first Battle of the Atlantic, gained by a hand's-breath; after seventeen months of lonely fighting and nineteen months of my responsibility in dire stress. We had won the war. England would live; Britain would live; the Commonwealth of Nations and the Empire would live. How long the war would last or in what fashion it would end no man could tell, nor did I at this moment care. Once again in our long Island history we should emerge, however mauled or mutilated, safe and victorious. We should not be wiped out. We should not be wiped out. Our history would not come to an end. We might not even have to die as individuals. Hitler's fate was sealed. Mussolini's fate was sealed. As for the Japanese, they would be ground to powder." - Winston Churchill *Memoirs* *of* *the* *Second* *World* *War*

In the 1920's, our most likely enemy was Britain, who had also allied with Japan against the US. Britain sold them ships, trained up naval forces to work as a modern navy, and also worked with them on their air forces I believe. So Britain contributed greatly to the later issue of the Pacific theater, and likely caused Japan to be in a position to think it could go to war with the US and Britain in the first place in 1941. All in an attempt to work against the US, even right after the US had reversed WW1, saving the 'allies.' In WW2, France turned out to be a very poor ally, when not allied on the side of Germany, once the invasion of Normandy began. Went from helping, to detrimental selfish goals that hurt the allied war effort.

Without Great Britain and "The Allies" we wouldn't be here my dad has reiterated to me literally hundreds of times. You simply cannot capitulate to tyrants... Chamberlain did this again and again which emboldened Nazi Germany even more. Teaching them take what you want just dont bother us directly please. Invade whoever you want as long as it's not my country, right? Churchill knew this was nonsense. Churchill knew that every ally was worth protecting immediately before the threat was so strong it couldn't be stopped at all!
