Michigan has been nasty the past couple weeks... But winter is always a struggle for those in clean car club! The only trick I have to share - on days where the roads are wet/sloppy (or even raining during warmer weather), I fill up 2 one-gallon jugs of water, then put them in my car and drive to work. After going through the wet nasty roads and after parking my car, I just douse the side panels and back of the car with the water jugs and it helps sheet off a lot of the yuck before it can dry or freeze on. People at work probably think I'm nuts 😂. It helps though, especially after you recently washed it.

For pre-washing during the winter check Auto Fanatic review/demo of StarBrite Salt Off. It's a great product that leaves a Teflon like layer of protection behind. I dilute 60mls/2 Oz of product in 1 liter of water. I use foam pump to cover the car and let it work for 10 minutes. I then rinse it off using a power wash (from local gas station) and dry using Sonax BSD as drying aid (2 squirts on towel per panel) . I do this twice a week if time permits and there's a lot of road salt to avoid build up. Salt off literally dissolves salt and light dirt. It can go on painted surfaces, tires, glass, wheels and trim. Totally recommended. Car is ready in less than 30 minutes. Method above can be used without power wash (see Auto Fanatic's video) Note: my car is well looked after, I coated with Fusso Coat 5 months ago and it's still going strong. Salt off does not remove waxes or sealants when used as per manufacturer's instructions.

I undercoat my mid-size SUV with Krown rust control each fall. When the weather warms up in the spring, I find some Krown residue leaks out of the seams and onto the body. Not a huge issue on my paint, but most of it winds up on my textured black plastic trim, which is more difficult to clean. Any suggestions on cleaning textured plastic trim?

Hey Pan, I know you live in MTL, i have a Question regarding mobile detailing during the winter in QC, any tips on how to do that on a business perspective, any products to use and how even to be able to do it in a -5 degrees? Unless mobile detailing in only from spring to fall. Thanks in advance
@PanTheOrganizer8 ай бұрын
I am not a mobile detailer. I detail from my garage all year round (heated and cooled garage) so I have no tips for mobile detailers in Quebec unfortunately. Plus, it's not recommended to detail in below freezing temperatures, you'd still need to have access to the customer's garage, or rent a garage space somewhere. Your best bet would be to reach out to mobile detailers in your area and have a discussion with them and see what they recommend.

I know this is a little late. I just purchased a new black truck this month. January Michigan winter... What would you recommend to protect the paint now? No access to running water other than local carwash. Truck wont fit into the garage. I do own polisher, compounds, wax and sealants. Should I just use a spray sealant/ rinse and then full detail in the spring?
@PanTheOrganizer2 жыл бұрын
That's a hard one, as I would always recommend the best possible protection (ceramic coating) right out of the gate on day 1 as soon as you take delivery of your new vehicle. But you don't apply coatings (or any type of protection for that matter) in temperatures below 10F. Ideally you want to apply protection around 68F which is the ideal temp. But since you have no access to water and no garage, there's nothing you can do really. You could bring it to a pro detailing shop and have a coating applied. Do it once, do it right. If you apply a cheap protection now, you will struggle come spring time to fully remove it before applying something with more durability like a ceramic or graphene coating. You could do nothing, and just wait until spring comes along and then do all the steps right. Watch my ceramic coating application tutorial: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qaK0iomgraukgZI

What kind of waterless wash do you suggest I use in my unheated garage? Something like the Adams waterless wash? The Ammo product, although it is diluted with water. Have a great day!

A waterless wash should only be a last resort alternative and only on lightly soiled cars. AMMO Frothe would be the best hoseless wash. But if you can, step up to a rinseless wash instead. Hi Marc. For the doors, you can spray a silicone based spray lubricant for rubber on a towel, and rub that into the rubber seals around the doors. This will prevent water moisture and prevent them from freezing.

I’m out in Colorado where sometimes it does t get above freezing for a week + and all the road salt builds up really fast, any tips of cleaning a car while it’s below freezing?
@PanTheOrganizer5 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't recommend washing a car below freezing, as most chemicals are ineffective at those temperatures (below 40F) and water will simply freeze on the surface... Either you get a heated garage, or bring it to a hand wash reputable detailing place. Third and least favourite option is bring it to an automatic car wash.
@ColoradoMk45 жыл бұрын

I've found that using distilled water in a super soaker and rinsing the car off right after you come home helps keep the car cleaner, especially if the car has water on it that hasn't dried yet. You can also mist a waterless wash over the car and let it dwell a moment before you rinse the car. Distilled water dries clean, so you won't have to worry about wiping it dry, especially in cold weather.

Pan is my hero. I have a garage, but it's unheated/uninsulated and my car is a daily driver. Invariably, then, it gets covered in salt and other road grime in the winter. The paint is ceramic coated, so I'm not too concerned about longterm negative effects on the paint, but it's just not possible to wash it as frequently as I'd like during the cold months. These tips are helpful and I just may try a waterless wash method the next time we have a day that's tolerable to be in the garage for an extended period of time.

Hey Pan, my mom bought a brand new 2018 Golf (white silver) last summer and after washing it today, I noticed A TON of small orange/yellowish spots on the paint, especially on the back bumpers and hatch... I applied a Silverwax paint sealant back in November so I have no idea why she has so many rust spots. She keeps it in the garage (at maximum 5°C) though so maybe that's why. Any idea if these spots are removable? Thanks
@chrisroberts91975 жыл бұрын
All of those orange spots you are seeing are embedded contaminants that need to be removed. First chemically decontaminate the paint with carpro iron x or optimum farrex, just to name a couple, spray the entire car down and let it dwell. It will start to turn purple as it breaks down the iron particles embedded in the paint. This wont eliminate claying but it will help reduce the amount of time you spend claying the vehicle. Buy or mix up a clay lube and grab a clay bar, clay towel or clay mitt and get to claying.

No as you don't know what effect that might have on the soap's chemistry. If you don't have access to a heated garage, don't wash your car in temps below 5 to 10C (41-50F). Perhaps seek a place with wash bays that you can use. There seems to be many of those in the USA.

great topic. -24c highs -32c lows ya not washing my car! Forget about road GRIT; calcium chloride and other brines. I am sure we all have access to coin operated hand wash bays? Pressure wash plus various selections of product (soak/degreaser/wax/rinse/spotless rinse etc) a toonie for x number of minutes. I would be interested on how you would recommend intreating that resource for those without a heated home wash bay! Further undercarriage washing.... I have a couple of other ideas for Canadian winter detailing.... and a lot more questions for you as well!

Sans ca je n'ai pas d'autre truc.. je scelle les fenetres de quelques clients l'hiver sinon!

PRO TIP (from an enthusiast), unfortunately this only works with garage owners... dun dun dun... detail your vehicle inside your garage :D I am a cheeky so and so. Another good one is using those self-service coin washes, mainly for the jet wash, then bring your own cleaning apparatus. A bonus is if you own an IK Foamer, or something similar, use that to your advantage with spraying car soap etc. Love this channel; gives that input of how more ways to skin a cat, or wash a car in this case.

I always wash my vehicles outside during the New England winters. Rather than doubling up on winter gloves and nitrile gloves, I use Glacier Glove ice fishing gloves. They keep your hands warm and dry even in the coldest water. They are thick enough to protect your hands but thin enough that you can get the feel of towels and tools. You can pick them up at Bass Pro Shops or Dick's Sporting Goods.

If I am unable to use the pressure washer and 2 bucket method @ home, I take my truck to the do it yourself bay, thoroughly rinse the heavy salt and road grime off. I bring the truck home and perform a rinseless wash. In years past I have used a wash mitt but this year I purchased Minx Royale towels based off your videos with the Rag Company.

The Minx Royale are my towels of choice for rinseless washes as well, combined with ONR it's a killer duo! :)

If I apply a ceramic coating can I use a car cover to protect my car from the elements so it can cure? I don’t have a garage to leave it inside and was wondering what someone like me can do.
@PanTheOrganizer5 жыл бұрын
You'll have to check what temperatures your specific ceramic coating requires for curing, as anything close to freezing isn't recommended usually.

Would a waterless or rinseless wash work well as a “pre-rinse” since it’s designed to lift the dirt off the surface?
@PanTheOrganizer5 жыл бұрын
Yes. Many people use ONR as a pre-rinse to a wash in something like an IK sprayer. Let it soak a few minutes, then rinse.

Any thoughts on foam snow tools on paint. I use a sun Joe foam cleaner tool for snow.
@PanTheOrganizer Жыл бұрын
If it's just light powdery fluffy snow, use a leaf blower. 100% contactless. If you are removing harder snow with a snow broom or a foam block, wrap a microfiber towel around the head and always leave a bit of snow on the paint, don't remove all the way down to the paint, that way you don't run the risk of scratching the paint.
@Taino5.0 Жыл бұрын
@@PanTheOrganizer got it. yea the tool I have is completely made out of foam at the head so nothing that can scratch. Kinda like a nerf football.

Bonjour PAN Quand dois-je utiliser le GYEON Q2M PREP, entre le sealant jet seal et le butter wet wax ou après la décontamination avec la Clay barre. merci pour toutes tes videos je suis souvent tes conseils
@PanTheOrganizer5 жыл бұрын

It's been brutal in Calgary lately. Usually I try to go to a wand wash before ONR but all of them seem to be closed in -15. I've been doing smaller buckets of ONR and changing out the water more often as it gets quite full of salt.

Are any of those degreasers you are using petroleum based? I predominantly have to use petroleum based first during the winter months otherwise the dirt will not come off. I also have to do a round with alkalic degreaser diluted. Then one round with the foam cannon and two bucket method... a bit cumbersome Never used the no rinse wash methods to scared for that haha

@@PanTheOrganizer I'll give it a go when the weather is more mild:). Any thoughts regarding the degreasers, the ones I have to use are quite strong from a chemical PoV. I would assume the weather in CA and Sweden are quite similar, I need to use the degreasers, the petroleum based I only use from the door handles and down as it is not to get in behind the door trims as it dissolves the rust protection.

@PanTheOrganizer5 жыл бұрын
I wouldn’t wash my car outside under 45F (7C) as you would be too cold to enjoy doing the work and you’re reaching the limit where chemicals don’t perform well anymore (40F).

Pan can you please advise, I have the new x5 which I am told has extremely soft paint by the guy who polished it and applied the ceramic coating, I have done a few maintenance washes using all the correct techniques, pre wash using a pH neutral snowfoam, using the 3 bucket method and trying to be as gentle as I can, even using a leaf blower in order to remove as much water as I can before using a microfibre towel. However, I have still inflicted a lot of scratches and swirl marks and I am gutted but I don’t know how I can stop this as I believe I already am using all of the correct techniques! Thanks I’m advance
@PanTheOrganizer5 жыл бұрын
I’m surprised he would tell you that as German luxury cars traditionally have very hard clear coats. If you inflicted swirls and scratches in your paint, the only solution is to use CarPro Essence+ polish (not the regular Essence) which is designed to corrected damaged ceramic coatings.
@olliebell71775 жыл бұрын
Pan TheOrganizer ok thanks, I’ll give it a go. Yeah he said it is incredibly soft not sure why it is but it does seem soft as it hasn’t took much for any scratches to appear
