Old/dieing back weeds are great because what feeds off decaying plant matter? Snails and critters, what do carp like to eat? Cast a hair rigged snail/slug, or a few worms over to some old weeds ;)

Great video as ever. So what is your winter boilie of choice please? I'm a single bait winter guy. My feeling is far too much bait has gone in the lakes this year with everybody fishing during lock down, its not made for a good year, many saying catch rates are down on their lakes. I still see heavy spods and over loaded bait boats being used in winter months. Fisheries should ban them during this period to reduce the amount of grub available to the carp. Just my opinion and thoughts.

I've always found pickled eggs to be the most prolific hookbaits during the winter months. I'm not entirely sure why but imagine the salty, sweet, and acidic flavours to be a powerful combination that makes them addictive high-protein snacks.

I fish exactly the same in winter as I do in summer, which is at complete variance to Iain's advice in almost all aspects. But I suppose that's what makes fishing interesting! 🙂🎣 By the way, I also fished the Army lake back in the day. Best of luck everyone out there, and above all remain warm and enjoy the winter months. 🙂🎣 One last point, fish can be caught in any depths of water year round...but I tend to target very big carp on all types of waters in winter, and the one major factor I've learnt is that they tend to spend a great deal of their time in very deep water, often at extreme depths. So that's where I am very confident to place my rigs during the most severe weather conditions.
@jackmountain61253 жыл бұрын
How deep have you caught carp mate? I'm fishing a lake that is 15 Meters deep but fish haven't been caught over 10 Meters, thanks
@Globetrotter-13 жыл бұрын
@@jackmountain6125 I used to think the same as others back in 60's and 70's, but when I began fishing the very deep water as much as the shallows, my catches of giant fish soared. I've caught thousands of carp in the 50ft - 100ft deeps. The 60ft deep zone seems to be a very good winter feeding zone on many waters. But it all depends of course on many other aspects plus watercraft, and above all confidence. In shallower lakes and rivers I still search out deep zones, so if it has 25ft or 30ft or 45ft trenches, gulley's and holes, then that's where I'll search. Also search out the routes between deep zones, such as the steep slopes and ledges at 10m, 15m and 20m. Big carp will also move into these same deep zones during prolonged heatwaves of summer.

Great video as always, ive recently seen a nice carp in my old park lake...nobody fishes it and the park has gone its only about 3/4 of an acre 3-7ft deep i think they must be a few carp in there, what do you think would be the best approach without spooking them too much i was thinking of putting a bed of bait down for a week or 2 before i go but thats something i never do so its putting me off lol. the lake also has an inlet and outlet at opposite ends. cheers
@island_angler_jsy3 жыл бұрын
if it's dirty water coming out the inlet that could entice them to enter it in search of food so worth a try there. I'd probably try get down on a sunny day (if you get one) just take a walk around and see if you can spot them and target them or just a light scattering of bait near the area and target at a later day as a start point. If you can't commit to a baiting plan

Yeah chilly, was taking everything you was saying as gospel till you said the coldest part is the water is the bottom, this is completely situational and not fact. at night or on freezing days, the coldest is the surface. that's why it freezes. when its hot and the sun beats on the surface, then the bottom will be cooler. thought someone with such experience would realise this.
@bicketybam3 жыл бұрын
exactly this. with modern technology this can also be very well verified with fish finders and in a more old school way if you own your own clear fish pond. on a cold calm winter day the fish will sit near if not on the bottom often at the deepest place often together. on a very sunny day they may seek shallower water where the surface has been warmed by the sun and on a hot windy day sometimes the undertow of that warm water away from the direction of the prevailing wind.
@TobaxSkosto3 жыл бұрын
The coldest part of the lake is the surface, that's why it freezes on top and not below.
@Matto88273 жыл бұрын
The bottoms the coldest mate I know what your saying and I don’t understand why it freezes on the top but the deeper you go the colder it gets
@TobaxSkosto3 жыл бұрын
@@Matto8827 It freezes on the top because it's literally colder on the top, it's closest to the air which is what cools the water and when it hits freezing temperatures it starts from the top down. Where as the deeper water is further away and contains the heat better. I have koi in a pond and they spend the entire winter hugging the bottom because it's warmer at the bottom.
@Matto88273 жыл бұрын
@@TobaxSkosto I even googled it and it’s def colder at the bottom as less light penetrates through the deeper you go. I think the reason the top freezes is because the top 10mm of water is colder from air temp🤷🏻♂️ but I know what you mean I seen koi sat at the bottom in the winter but maybe that’s where they sort of hybinate🤔 god knows but I find it a bit confusing 🤣

The thing Ian said about cold water isn't really right. Water has its highest density at 4°C, not when it's at its coldest. So if the surface water is below 4°, then the warmest water will be at the bottom. If the surface water is above 4° the coldest water will be at the bottom. This is why ice floats. 😉

If the waters colder at the bottom why doesn’t the lake freeze solid from bottom to top , he’s wrong .. it’s just the surface coz it’s colder , then the lid warms the water under it also
@Divingbigpete3 жыл бұрын
I can assure you after diving lakes and pits in the winter it certainly does get colder the deeper you go some lakes be 8 or 9 at the surface dropping to as low as 2 or 3 at the bottom and its the air temp that causes the lid

www.vias.org/kas/en/water_anomaly.html "Anomaly of Water", I thought this was common sense. => he is right, and wrong, not under every circumstance the water at the bottom is colder than higher up. He is right while temperatures are sinking (late fall/early winter)
@Divingbigpete3 жыл бұрын
I've always found this to be the case in winter but I've dived mostly gravel pits ranging from 10 feet to 250 ft deep rather than shallow lakes under 5 of 6 feet but is amazing to see how close to the surface you will find fish in the freezing temperatures and the way they react to thermalclimes
