Well said Ian. Due to retirement I have just returned to fishing after a 30 year absence. To say I am stunned with the marketing led approach to all types of fishing these days is an understatement. I've got rigs coming out of my ears - bolt rigs, running rigs, helicopter rigs, chod rigs, hair rigs, pop-up rigs, lead core, braid, mono, dark matter, tubing. etc. etc. I will admit it caused me so much confusion and angst (hook sharpening being one aspect) I nearly lost the motivation to fish. The one thing I am pleased about is the attention to respecting the fish. I did invest in a correctly sized quality landing net and a de-hooking cradle. Having sifted through all the KZbin videos I have filtered it down to a simple mono running rig setup.with some small sinkers to keep the hook link down. On the surface I simply use a floating hook link with no embellishments baited with dog biscuits. Both rigs have done me very proud and often catch 12lb+ carp in good numbers. I know when I start targeting 20lb+ carp I will need to have a rethink on my rig and line setup. My days of spending £60+ every time I walk into a fishing tackle shop are over!

Same as you, just retired and starting fishing after a 20 odd year layoff. 2 tench rods, 4 carp rods (1 for marker float) and a spod rod, all top quality old school stuff bought used on fleabay , along with old school baitrunners). Then we get to rigs and terminal tackle. 4 large Fox compartment boxes and 2 Fox flip top boxes stuffed to the gills with stuff that I ain't going to use half of. Hook beads? Cut off a tiny length of rig tube and it'll do exactly the same job without having to strain my eyes trying to get the point through the hole. Like you, a mono running rig setup for bottom baits, a bog standard hair rig on braid for PVA bags and a multi rig for a bit of a change if I want to swap bait/hook size. A fair old few of my 20lb + carp have come when fishing for tench and big bream on pits; corn/maggot on a 12, 10mm boilie on a 10, lobworm and even good old bread paste (don't knock it, it still catches fish). Keep it simple and it'll work.

I fish with a couple of lads who've been fishing a lot longer than I have, they both like to follow the latest rig trends, I stick with my tried and trusted. On the other hand, they stick with the same bait, whereas I experimented a bit with hookbaits until I found one that I felt comfortable with. The last few times we've been out, I've caught more. Other times, they have. Just do whatever the hell you want and don't feel pressured into trying new things if you're confident in what you're doing! By all means give it a try if you want, though!

Having your hookbait kick away from the lead every time is certainly possible with a balanced pop-up (ie. just enough counterweight to sink it) and a very stiff boom material assuming there is nothing to prevent the bait moving away from the lead (weed/sticks etc.) but with a bottom bait it's not really possible because the material is never strong enough to overcome the weight of the bait/hook. A wafter is possible but it is likely that the hook will sit up on its edge with the point on the deck when balanced that critically, whether that's what you're happy with is up to you but personally I'd prefer a low pop-up which presents the bait at roughly the same height but having the hook point clear of debris on the bottom.
@georgeeburnss3 жыл бұрын

At Last - a knowledgeable, accomplished angler speaking the Truth & exposing the ‘so called’ other experts & tackle companies👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 I have been fishing for 65yrs & it astounds me how angling attracts such gullible, money wasting idiots above all other sports/pastimes! There are so many KZbin anglers who must spend £1,000’s upon £1,000’s per year & catch no more/no better fish than I do using some tackle that’s 25-30yrs old! My main baits over the past few years are bread/worm/sweetcorn/hemp (cheapest, most available baits out there) & I have caught quite a few large fish of many species. You see extortionately marketed products by these leading tackle companies & the next week 1/2 the anglers on your lake or on KZbin are using them. Don’t get me started on reels!!! They have become the equivalent of football shirts - change every year, for absolutely no reason apart from aesthetics🙄 Well done ‘Chillie’ for exposing these myths & those who peddle & believe them👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🎣👍🏻

Got a lot of respect for Chilli’s views here and totally agree with 80% of it. Again personal confidence is everything and I’m absolutely convinced (and 100% confident) that my hook up rate has massively increased since I learned to hand sharpen properly. Take any hook out of a packet and study it under jewellers loupe and you will see a rounded tip. Sticky sharp and tested via palm test is now key to my fishing. That said palm test is actually an edge of hand test. Once hook has gone in…I flip my hand over and if hook then falls out….it ain’t sharp enough…it gets buffed up again. Chilli you could catch so many more by sharpening! 🤣

Sorry, but I think some of what he talks is a load of bollocks as well.. A sharp hook outperforms a blunt hook, so sharpen the point after a few casts when it’s needed. I high hinged stiff rig will not get picked up by as many small carp as it will big carp. Proven on underwater by Elliot Gray. 9 times out of 10 a more complicated rig will not tangle more than a simple rig. Tangles are caused more by shit casting. Re-setting rigs are specific to the type of rig, and just because it’s not relevant in a solid bag doesn’t mean it’s not relevant on another set up. Old Bollocks… Hmm, maybe look in the mirror Chilli.

Mr Chillcot you just became my favourite angler alongside Mr Hearn. I stopped carp fishing around 20 years ago getting back into it in 2016. My first session was at walthamstow and i used rhe same method/rigs i did back in the day (braided hair rig, popped up with a shot on a bolt clip and tubing) and I caught 4 fish in a short day session. Having also caught the bug again, i then went onto falling into the trap of modern day carp fishing madness and ended up spending fortunes and going through the utter stupidity and naivity of trying everything for fhe next few years and ultimately ruining my fishing. I have since reverted back to simplicity and common sense. Since then i have done 4 pbs and fish with a smile on my face....tip of rhe 👒

Mostly good straight talking advice, I do think/believe hand sharpening hooks gets more runs though - in my case I mainly use light 1oz leads, so as I'm not setting the hook with a heavy lead, I need that pin sharp point ( and rig mechanics ) to get one toners. Dead right about weakening the vital hook point though, I only use emery boards not diamond coated files etc that remove too much metal = weakened point..

Anglers have been sharpening hooks for a long time.. its not a new thing and it's not a fad, in my humble opinion.. my dad has a hook sharpening stone that his dad gave him.. it looked as old as the pyramids lol... A little more explanantion on your humble opinion of sharpening hooks would've been great. Why does it damage them? Because the tip is then likely to rust? What if you put a tiny bit of beeswax on after sharpening/before casting? I know that is a lot of hassle.. but seriously, if you've got an old blunt hook, whats wrong with sharpening it?! Additionally, a lot of hooks straight out of the packet, really aren't sharp at all! Kamakura is one of the only ones that I've felt, that are actually razor sharp and penetrate with virtually no force.. but they are twice the price 🤣 I can acheive kamakura- sharpness on a blunt hook in a matter of minutes.. I'm certain sir Chillcott has got some sound reasoning. I just wish he told us those reasons. His one reason (it will damage the hook) is very vague and easily misinterpreted

I have fished the same rig since I started fishing in 1977. A mono running leger rig. The only difference now i use a bead snap swivel for weight and snap swivel for the hooklink. And nowadays i tend to use a hair but not always. As to all the other rigs they are invented by anglers that aren't catching mainly because they are doing something else wrong. Funny, ..saying the hand palm test 'is an utter load of rubish' but pulling the rig horizontally over ones hand in the video is actually an idicator one doesn't understand the mechanics of a bait pick up... As if carp don't mostly lift their heads (somewhat) up from the bottom where the lead is, thus stretching the rig more vertical/diagonal when moving on. This makes the force on the hook come from below, as the line pulls down over the fish's lip. Doing the palm test certainly isn't flawless. But done a bit decent - so not horizontally! - it will definitly show if a rig is totally crap in hooking into flesh or the hook actually turns downwards as wanted. Ps about 15, 20 years ago I visited a friend getting three bites in about 30 minutes, ..but all runs stopped. After me insisting a couple of times he showed me one of his rigs and it made me laugh because of his stubborness and the beginner mistake he had made. The thick Gardner braid (a bit semi stiff) was coming out of the back side of the hook eye and this had made his effort in pre baiting a waste of time and money so far, because every single time I did the palm test with all of his rigs the hook point turned away from my hand palm instead of hooking flesh! So I fixed his rigs, the thick semi stiff braid coming out of the inside of the hook eye (like an l.a.), and the few runs he had after all got hooked just fine. And that's what a palm test defenitly shows - even with certain hook and line aligner types, ..rubbish or good to go. So yes, I call Chillcott's opinion on this one just like the video titlle says: 'That's bullsh*t'.
