You could extend your grazing days a lot further if you're interested in cover crops in between the rows

You gotta do what is most cost effective. Guys out in southwest nebraska feed cattle all winter on just corn stocks and what ever corn is left on the ground once the corns picked.
@TylerBunchanumbers5 жыл бұрын
Whether strip grazing stockpiled grass, corn, or other feed you are always better off leaving in field. We're just now seeing the silliness of processing cattle feed (cutting, gathering, hauling, drying, storing, loading, hauling, feeding) in contrast to just planting and opening a gate. We've been obsessed with yields for a thousand years and not on practicality and common sense. I'm right there. I feel stupid for how we've raised cattle on our farm when common sense solutions (not to mention easier work &less worry) was right under our noses the whole time. We've changed and it's great.

So much truth to that, I do wonder if they would gain better if you went in with a silage chopper and piled it up for them

I just watched a video about them using milo as winter feed seems like some good options out there

We winter 120 head on 45 acres from end of Nov till mid Feb then they are shut in to freshen up for Mar 1st calving. this practice has reduced our shit spreading by 60% and diesel usage by 50% over the winter. As long as they have water near by and shelter when storms pop up they shouldn't metabolize any faster.

I've always wondered why people didn't do this and add cover crops for nitrogen. Numbers don't lie.

Instead of maize I would plant Sorghum. Why? 1. drought resistend 2. No cob and 3. Lower energy density.

I wonder what date the corn is planted and whether the field had an earlier crop harvested before the corn planting?

Should swathgraze barley/oats/peas till Christmas. Way cheaper. Then corn graze Jan feb.

You could feed 2000 cows over the winter if you turn corn from 75 acres into silage... just saying...
@youriimmink78126 жыл бұрын
Andrei M I agree, the losses are huge
@aidan67266 жыл бұрын
Andrei M you also have to mix hay and other grains with the silage when you feed. If you penciled it out it would probably be the same $ per head
@piperdoug4285 жыл бұрын
75 acres of silage to feed 2000 head? maybe a month of feed.
@darynbaer61255 жыл бұрын
Yeah, if you think you could feed 2000 on 75 you don’t know shit.

Why not just use hay? Isnt that corn gmo.Im thinking grass fed is the future.
@tntcattle62466 жыл бұрын
Steve's Outdoor World no it’s not. Who would care if it’s gmo gmos are not bad I don’t understand what the big deal is with grass fed and non gmo products with corn fed beef they grow a hell of a lot faster and your not eating a four year old steer that’s dry
@JamesOBrien22536 жыл бұрын
Steve's Outdoor World he could have grown sorghum Sudan grass and grazed it aswell hay is expensive to make

Seems like a grass crop would be better but i dont know for sure.I do know bison only eat grass and the meat is great and organic. But i think bison would eat corn too.lol

@@ryanstapleton6953 shutup you ignorant fuck, do your research. Cows aren't supposed to eat corn, thats why they inject them with antibiotics and thats why the cows grow up in 14 months rather then 30 months. These guys just keep making a profit off of your dumbass, thinking that if you eat grain fed meat its the same as grass fed meat LOL.
