Wondering how far you and Mark go back. You seem very similar in your mannerisms. You must be brothers. Thank your for sharing and all that you do for the horticulture world.🌲🌹🌲

It's always a pleasure to see Mark and the Raulston. I garden in Zone 6b/7a so am rather envious of your range of broad-leaved evergreens, but I have to say that where the colored bark maples really shine is against the snow. I have a sango kaku that is in front of an evergreen hedge and it is lovely in the snow. Same for the cornus with colorful twigs. I am trying a camellia that is supposed to be hardy in Zone 6 -- last winter was mild so we will see how it does this year. I have it in a sheltered spot, but it hasn't bloomed so may need more sun (or they just take a while to settle in). The shiny green foliage is nice even if it doesn't bloom, but I will be forever spoiled by seeing the enormous camellias in bloom at Kew Gardens in March.

I love listening to Mark. I love to see weeping trees left to do what they do (with a slight assist from us). My new neighborhood is FULL of weeping cherries, but they’ve all been given a Seussian bowl cut. I hate it. 😅
QUESTION FOR JIM PUTNAM: WHAT was the gorgeous plant just in front of you, + to the right (screen left) of the spectacular Gold DoubloonTM Gardenia, in your last shot there w the Raulston Director, Mark Weathington, please? TY! Great, great video. Love Winter Garden shows.

The grandkids and I went to the JCRA on Friday, January 12. What a great time! The story book and Yeti events kept the kids interested while I was checking out the plants and designs within the gardens. Thanks for sharing, Jim and Stephany!

Wow, Mark is a wealth of knowledge. He is not dogmatic as most of the academicians/horticulturists are, who only keep harping about native plants.

And alas, most of our nurserymen in my area shut down in December. And re open in march. Hard to find any plants during winter

Same here, it's sad, but as Mark noted they have a hard time selling things "out of season". I end up buying a lot of plants online from speciality nurseries, but the trade off is small plants that may take a while to have an impact.

JC Raulston is beautiful, but local landscape companies typically only offer holly bushes, privet or arborvitae. - have yet to come across a Jim Putnam landscaper.

I needed this video. I love a winter garden and sadly mine is not great yet. I love stem color too and that’s what I’ve been thinking about this winter. I need color because my house is beige and stone. The garden looks messy in winter no matter what I do and I think that’s because it lacks some sort of contrasting bright color.

Jim do you know if mahonia will grow underneath large live oaks in full shade? Not many plants will grow directly under oaks but doing my research says they can take shade. Is there a variety of mahonia that takes drought (Texas sand) and shade better than the others? I’m wanting to plant some for feeding my beehives in fall and winter and also looking for the larger varieties with maximum flowering. Looks mean nothing to me. This is out in the pasture as a honeybee food source only.

I’m in zone 7A TN. Here, they grow wild in the woods under deep shade, deep leaf fall and on slopes voluntarily with zero maintenance. They’ll take over in fact. I don’t know, but I strongly doubt you’ll have any problems getting them to grow where you’re at in those conditions.
@jamesbarron12027 ай бұрын
@@michaelcrawley8221 we went through the entire summer without an inch of rainfall. Our summers seem to be getting worse every year. Seemed like everyday was in the triple digits this summer and I don’t even run AC. I just tough it out. I’m in my 60s and single so I can do that. 2023 was the hottest ever recorded year in Texas. It’s like a desert in my sandy soil in summer. Cactus, bull needles and sandburs grow good here. I spent weeks spraying my pasture for sandburs with a backpack sprayer. I only did a 4 acre area where they are the worst and spot sprayed it 5 times. It takes years to get most of them. It took me years to finally eradicate them in my big yard. The seeds stay dormant for many years.
