Plants in pots have their roots exposed to more cold than plants in the ground. In the US they say you lose like one or two USDA hardiness zones if a plant is in a pot vs in the ground. So if you live in USDA zone 7 and you have a plant that's hardy to zone 7, if it's planted in the ground it should survive winter. But if it's in a pot the plant is going to feel like it's zone 5 or 6 and the plant will probably die.

Colder here in NZ, heavy frost, I put my outdoor plants on my veranda,they are slightly damaged but I think they will come right,all my aroids go in the lounge, it's warm,fan on and humidifier and they are happy little campers 🪴

I do the same thing with my plants. I chop them down and hope they come back in the spring. Plants are resilient as long as their roots are kept warm during winter they will come back stronger. Good luck❄️

Now i understand how wonderful my environement is... i m living in southern most part of india - equatorial and leeward side. It is mostly dry and during summers, the place will be sooo hot. That will be a stressful period for the plants. There will be some losses. But not many like your's man! To see your greenhouse like that...my heart ached! I am definitely waiting for your spring update for me to take heart..

Nice video Jan. I've noticed most Monstera species are generally more cold hardy than Philodendrons. There are some Anthuriums that are quite cold hardy as well. To my suprise, my queen Anthurium handled temps to 8/10 degrees Celcius easily.

My Alocasia Jacklyn melted overnight. It must have frozen or something. I may have saved one tiny corm from the soil but the whole thing went to mush. This has been the hardest winter since I really started keeping lots of plants 14 years ago. So you are not alone. Spring is only 3 weeks away now! I cannot wait.

DONT THROW AWAY the Billie!!!! My billietiae did the same thing and it was even soft and mushy, but soon enough it sprouted back up the smallest leaf I have ever seen

Aww Jan, that was a sad one 😢 You certainly took it better than I would have. Love your attitude, good learning experience. Seems that roots must stay warmer in ground, rather than in cold pot surrounded by cold air. Might you consider some sort of temp control in greenhouse for next year?

Probably not … i don’t have a reliable power source outside so kinda tricky to provide consistent temps so i’ll just let them fight for their survival :D

Thank you for this information. I live near San Francisco with similar low temperatures in the winter. Surprisingly, my syngoniums do fine through the winter. Philodendron domesticum does well also. It looks like my philodendron adonsonii would do well.

Loved your comment as less dead 😂😂😂. Will be waiting results of your rescued plants. For sure having 5C at night isn’t good for tropical plants but some aroids are growing in high mountains, with cooler temperatures so I am not surprised they do survive.

Not failures, just what winter does, most will come back. Most of my plants grow outside, the ones that wither with the weather usually survive and bounce back, they seem to get stronger the more winters they live through.

Such a treat watching your garden. So far away... and so very interesting. As a renter in SW Ontario, Canada, I have some perenials I over winter in containers. I'm in a Zone 6b, so rule of thumb here, is they have to have a hardiness zone of 3 in order to survive in a pot. Also, I have houseplants I keep outside all summer, (Syngoniums, Monstera, Alocasia etc) into fall... such as Fred, my 35+ year old Ficus benjamina stays out until night time temps start to dip below 15-10 C. For your garden of tropicals, I would think anything that originates from a cloud forest type climate would probably make it in a container vs in the ground. Also, many gardens have 'pocket zones' that can be higher/lower than your actual zone - figuring this out can take time. Its a learning curve... over the last decade I've had many a casuality... but this year my garden is the best its looked.

I love how well you take all those plants not dying....I would be extremely distraught. That is part of the experiment and situation, however, so understandable...I just love your mental resistance. With that being said, if it was me I would rent a storage unit and get some plant lights. I figure it'll cost the same as starting over and buying new plants in spring, except you'll still have some awesome large plants that you can put back outside for the summer season. Just a thought, and probably not a reasonable thought, but a thought nontheless 😂.

⛄️ I have a regal shield outside and it thrives. I’m in South Carolina in the United States. I also like to experiment with plants wintering outside and right now I have some reverted Florida beauty and a lot of different syngonium in hanging baskets. I’ll have to see what the winter brings.

In my country we have two months of cold winter 4-6oC at night. Last year my plants barely survived in the green house (unheated) this year I want to invest in a heater. My brother in law suggest to add sensors that can operate the heater when it's sense that the temperature drops from a certain level and turn off as it feel the temp is high enough

Outdoor gardening especially with exotic plants is like farming. There is always an element of risk. To check to see if a woody stem is still alive you can scrape the bark with your fingernail or dull knife and see if there is green underneath. There is a layer of cells that is alive just under the bark. Cut off a dead section just above that point. I am surprised that your nepenthes are doing so well!

I want your winter 😅 I am low maintenance and I can cope very well with 1 month single digit nights 😅 I am very sorry for your plants .. I lost only 1 plant in my life and I suffered a lot. Now I have 14 on my terrace . 🥶glad I took my faves in the house for all the under 10° nights.... but we were dry mostly, my ones in the ground all survived with cold damaged colour on the leaves, but no rot. Did you know Congo greens go a beautiful shade of salmon? Oh, except for half a dozen Adansonia leaves on one side of the tree went black and fell off one night(2°). Only a few weeks till spring!!!😎

I just moved from New York to Texas and I’m having exactly the opposite with my collection. I was not prepared for how truly “surface of the sun” hot Houston would be.. I did not realize my days would exceed 105 degrees Fahrenheit. Apparently it just is ungodly hot here non stop

Bathurst NSW here. My big Monstera is out on the balcony and she was doing fine until I put her out in the rain and I forgot about her and we had quite a few nights -5 plus… 😅😢. As it’s frost that’s bad for monstera. I’ve even lost a few Alocasia inside because unfortunately have a lot of draft going through the windows and I have to deal with that for next winter but my house can get down to -5. So greenhouse plus grow lights and heat mats.

I gotta be honest, sometimes when a plant in my care dies, I feel relieved, like, I have less plants to worry about now, ya know? Like, I get another chance to fix my care if I wanna buy a new one, or, it’s not one I’d replace so I have room to add another “Grail” plant to my collection I also agree that if a plant can’t live in my care, they’re not meant for me, I’ve left tons of plants outside this summer and a lot of them burned in our 40 degree heat, I chop the dead back and wait and see. 100% the overnight temperatures have been colder this winter. The day time hasn’t been that bad but the overnights have been insane. We got like minus 5 in Canberra. I’ve had a couple cold related deaths inside this year.

This is the first winter for my indoor/outdoor collection and I have experienced lots of leaf drop. I thought it was neglect on my behalf. Every plant you showed with leaf drop were the same as the ones I lost. 😢😢 Im in SA.

the soil in the pot will definitely get colder than the ground. I think if you dig only 20m down the soil has the same temperature year round, and if the surface has 0Celsius then 2,5m down it can already be +5Celsius (I did only a quick search, so don´t come for me for exact numbers ;) ) Also from personal experience I had pots frozen solid and the ground wasn´t. It´s so sad to see your ´end of winter content´ as this just reminds me that here in denmark that means it´s end of summer. And winter is just so dark here :( I also need to get some repotting done and want to put a few plants on mosspoles before it get´s darker and cooler, though most my plants keep growing in winter just fine as indoors they have relatively good conditions and I can supplement with grow lights.
