Nature sure putting on a show for you Seth! Sunset, moon rise and sunrise, the golden triad. Great idea to grab the opportunity to camp over in a new spot. Hammock set up sure makes a grand hide for deer spotting!

It's wonderful when it all comes together! Though that deer gave me the starts when I heard it grunting in the dark!

I also visited Harriman for the first time in 2023 (June). Crazy how massive that is for a state park. Love that region of NY.

Yeah, it would be cool to explore further. As I was heading out on Day 2 a couple trail runners looked to be starting out for a long day in the hills.

Excellent shakedown hike! I tore my Whisperlite down and rebuilt it, all new O rings. Simple windscreen storage I didn't think about till I saw it was wrap it around the fuel bottle! And then I stick that in a side pouch.
@RhodySeth

Oh that's a good idea to wrap around the fuel bottle. I'll try that out. Thanks!

Glad you were able to make it! Yes parts of Harriman tend to see plenty of people.. if you had more time, you can hike deeper in and avoid most people. Great thing about Harriman are the trail networks.. so many different trails that connect and you can hike for miles and miles and also create loops ( as you mistakenly did ). You did get a nice sunset and sunrise at that spot too!!

I can definitely see how you can make some big routes there. Lots of options there! And pretty cool that you can take the train there. Thanks for your help with this one!

Thanks Simon - it was definitely a popular spot. I've been told if you trek a bit farther you can find more privacy. But I enjoyed my night. And it was a great way to wrap up Ezri's season!

Ha that’s my stomping ground! Rather be in the Whites but having Harriman so close to NYC has been a blessing.

Very cool spot. The shelter was cool man. A cool place to spend the night for sure.
@RhodySeth
@RhodySeth Жыл бұрын
Yeah I really dug that shelter. The stone provided lots of little shelves and nooks - Mike added tealights to various points on the wall. Apparently there's lots of nifty shelters in Harriman.

Harriman State Park in New York! Wow that’s not your normal territory. Nice job supporting your daughter and getting in a backpacking trip.
@RhodySeth

Definitely not my normal territory but once I found out about Ezri's race along the Hudson my mind started to putter and plan. I'm not a city guy but I'm jealous they can get to that place by train.

I'm so spoiled on the coast with year around mild temps. Chilly for you would probably be freezing for me. Great video as always.
@RhodySeth
@RhodySeth Жыл бұрын
Thanks much! I live about five minutes from the coast in Rhode Island - with the weak winters we've had lately it often deprives us of much of the snow that they get even a short ways inland. The funny thing is I generally don't like the cold unless I'm out adventuring in it.

My regular hiking hat is bright orange. I wear it all year long, so I don’t really have to keep track of hunting seasons.
@RhodySeth
@RhodySeth Жыл бұрын
Same. I have so many orange shirts from running trail races during hunting season so I'm usually wearing orange in the woods, regardless of the month.

@RhodySeth
@RhodySeth Жыл бұрын
@@jaytheurbanviking I'm a big fan of the Speedcross. Never tried the Gortex version. Are you thinking for snow? With good gaiters I think that could be a good combo.
@jaytheurbanviking
@jaytheurbanviking Жыл бұрын
@@RhodySeth I'd use my boot for winter condition but I run in some muddy conditions so I'd think the Gore-Tex would be better right? What you think?
@RhodySeth
@RhodySeth Жыл бұрын
@@jaytheurbanviking I suppose. My experience with the non-gortex versions has been that mud doesn't penetrate too much. Water certainly will but they will dry fairly quickly depending on what you're doing. They're a great shoe either way so I don't think you'll go wrong if you opt for the gortex version.
