The White Mountains already look like a Winter Wonderland.. and it's only November!
In this video, I hike Mt. Jackson and Mt. Webster, both located in the Presidential Range. I started from Crawford Notch and took the Jackson-Webster and Webster Cliff Trails.

First off save the one micro spike. You never know you could lose another one day. I also use a water blader and always keep the mouth piece stuffed in my coat, blow back the water from the tube and it has never froze on me. Happy hiking.

Hey Taylor. Another great video. As others have suggested blowing the water back into the bladder will help with the freezing but as it gets colder that will only work for so long. I would suggest switching to a wide mouth bottle for winter hiking. Also, not sure which are the good micro spikes that you have at home but there are brands that have an added velcro strap that prevents the spike from falling off. Best of luck with the winter hiking. I'm attempting Washington this weekend if the weather cooperates. Hike on!

I did Lonesome Lake on Saturday. What a gorgeous day. I want to hike up to Carter Notch Hut and Zealand Falls hut this Winter. Carter Notch has got to be amazing the way Wildcat and the Carters form the notch. Zealand Falls doesn't excite me because of the road walk to get to the trailhead. The last pitch up to the hut is a bit sketchy, I bet in the Winter.

"Hi can I have a twenty piece chickie nuggie, please?" 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Love your content! I'm heading back to NH, my home State, in January. Pennsylvania is nice but it really doesn't have anything that comes close to The White Mountains. Thank you for posting these videos. If you find yourself near Benton, you should try Black Mtn (trailhead off Lime Kiln Rd). It has a really fun, rocky summit, with a nice view of Mt Moosilauke and the Presidential range on clear days.

Morning Taylor! Chickie nuggies !!! 😂 Saw this on Strava and hoped you filmed it! I didn’t know Jackson wasn’t named after THE Jackson! Great piece of trivia! You should add that yo your next board game Nahamsa Edition Trivial Pursuit! The storm gave you the perfect amount of snow! Still safely passable without snowshoes and so so beautiful! Bummer about the micro spike. It’s good it wasn’t your nice pair. Views were so great from the summits. I hope I can make it up to the huts this winter. Are you planning any winter camping or just day hikes this year? A ski/boarding vlog would be awesome to see! Maybe a Chet cameo!? 🙏 Thanks for bringing us along today. I hope tomorrow’s miles are kind. Keep truckin’ and be well. -Grateful

Winter hiking in the Whites is my favorite! I’ve only done four of the 4000 footers in winter but I love it. Butt sledding is the best. I’ve not a butt sled I bring with me. Hiking pants I’m still figuring out my set up for winter but I’ll have to remember rain pants.

Didn't know the Jackson factoid either--you'd think living here my whole life, Id know that. Thanks, I love a good bit o' trivia. Agree about the spikes. I knew about Jackson being named for Charles. He was state geologist of both New Hampshire and Maine at different times. A lot of names in the Whites have origins different from what seems obvious. You might enjoy browsing the book _Place Names of the White Mountains_ by Robert and Mary Julyan. Libraries should have it.

In my limited experience I find winter snow can smooth over some of the smaller rocks and roots making the trail easier to walk on. The trade of is ice on steep inclines. No snow yet down here in Mass. What a difference just a few miles makes.

I always ask, how do winter hikers keep from getting lost. How do you follow a trail when it's covered with a foot of snow? The blazes which hikers usually use to guide them maybe covered with snow or covered by a snow ladden branch. 🌬️❄️❄️

Don’t know if anyone has mentioned this yet, I always blow the water out of the tube ( with both my winter and summer setup)so it’s all in the bladder between drinks. It almost always keeps ice at bay unless the temps dip below zero plus it eliminates the dribble factor.

How I wish I could hike mid-week. The last time I did a Winter hike up the Elephant's Head, the parking was horrendous. I have hiked with one foot with spikes before, the other one got clogged with snow and it wasn't working so I took it off, and the descent was very tricky. I tuck the hose of my water bladder in the front of my jacket to keep it from freezing and it has worked well.

Even the good micro spikes will get dull and dangerous, particularly when hiking involves bare rock. Fortunately the points can be sharpened with a small grinder. Do it at least once a year, and you'll be amazed how much better they grip.
