Winter in Dimi's Exotic Garden (January 11, 2024)

Hi everyone,
Finally I have a good 4K camera 😁
And I couldn't wait to test it and make a new video with it.
Unfortunately, it was winter again in Belgium last week...
We had 2 ice days, luckily with lots of sun, but at night it was -7°C, almost three nights in a row.
Last Thursday, January 11, 2024 was the last freezing day and I made this short video for you.
The garden is a mess, I know, but you can see that it is not always splendor.😊

Thanks Tim. The most important thing for Trachycarpus is nutritious soil, sufficient water (a lot) and not too hot temperatures, 22 to 25°C is ideal. Anything above that is actually too hot for them. And plant them small + the conditions just mentioned, then you will get the thickest, most beautiful & strongest Trachys 👍 Also important, never prune green leaves, try to avoid that, with all palms by the way. Mijn chamearops humilisen zijn ook niet beschermd, vorig jaar enkel een big bag er over en het zag er niet goed uit , de speren kwamen los maar eronder kwamen nieuwe speren en dus hoop ik van dit jaar hetzelfde. We worden ouder en ieder jaar deze grote bouwwerken is niet vol te houden dus op termijn zal enkel dat overblijven dat enigzinds wintervast is bij mij.

Chamaerops humilis is inderdaad meestal niet nodig om te beschermen. Afhankelijk waar je juist woont, in Limburg word het snel een pak kouder natuurlijk... Maar wel opletten met elk jaar speerrot, ze worden steeds zwakker waardoor minder vorst ze al kan doden... Maar ik begrijp het wel, met ouder worden word het inderdaad moeilijker. Ik hou dit ook niet vol tot mijn pensioen. Ooit worden ze te groot of ben ik te oud. We kunnen niet op tegen de natuur 🤷‍♂️ Veel genot & succes nog met jou palmen daar 👍 Groeten Dimi

Salut Dimi oui en Belgique sa commence, je suis de Charleroi mais à Liège il fait trop froid c'est exagéré, les miens CV c'est pas trop tropical comme toi , juste 2 butia capitata et 1 fortunei, courage a toi bonne continuation et j'espère voir tes autres vidéo bne jrnee 😊

Ja mooi overzicht weer! Er staan aardig wat palmen onbeschermd zie ik. En je hebt de jubaea alleen in het hart beschermt. Dat zou bij niet kunnen zo op het platteland denk ik of misschien ben ik te voorzichtig. Even mooi om te zien Dimi

Dank je Gert 😊 Ja normaal had de Jubaea dit jaar terug een eigen hok gekregen. Maar door omstandigheden is dat niet meer gelukt om te maken. Ik moet er nog één maken, dus alles nog op maat zagen enz... Nu het al zo ver in de winter is, heb ik niet veel zin meer om dit nu nog te gaan maken en bouwen. Dus dat zal voor volgend jaar zijn. Maar de Jubaea stond dus wel onbeschermd natuurlijk. Toen ik de voorspellingen zag werd het toch spannend, zeker met al die regen vooraf 😔 Daarom geen risico genomen en toch een warmtekabel rond het hart en speren. Deze zijn pas hersteld, dus nog zwak... Het is -7°C geworden, dat is dichtbij de limiet van de bladeren... ze knepen en vele donkergroene vlekken... maar ik ben redelijk gerust dat het nog net kon. Belangrijkste is dat de speren perfect blijven en daar ben ik zeker gerust in nu. Hopelijk blijft het hierbij en komt er geen strenge vorst meer. Ik tel al af naar Maart...🤞

Thank you David. 😊 Yes, winter is always ideal to make plans for the next season. Sounds fun what you're going to do 👍 We currently have positive temperatures again and around freezing at night. Next week occasional light frost at night. Last week we had two ice days and -7°C at night, then 2 nights -5°C.

C'est intéressant d'avoir protéger uniquement la lance pour le Jubaea, j'y avais pensé mais avec le moindre vent est-ce que la lance risque pas de ce détacher même très légèrement ce qui risque de faciliter le pourrissement ?

Mais non, les lances ici sont déjà aussi épaisses que mon bras. Ils ne se briseront plus à cause du vent et de ce sac maintenant. A moins qu'il y ait une grosse tempête... Non, je n'ai pas peur de ça. L'année dernière, ce Jubaea souffrait de pourriture de la lance, maintenant il s'est bien rétabli. Je ne veux donc plus prendre de risques. Les températures se rapprochaient des limites foliaires. C'est pourquoi j'ai mis un câble chauffant autour du cœur, des lances et de ce sac, juste pour être en sécurité. Je voulais faire une cage pour ce Jubaea, mais malheureusement cela n'a pas été possible à cause des circonstances...🤷‍♂️ J'espère que l'hiver est fini maintenant 🤞😊 Salutations Dimi

Thank you 해린팜 🙏😊 I live in Belgium. (Europe) The lowest temperature this winter was -7°C so far. The lowest temperature I have had here in the garden in 15 years was -18°C. But that rarely happens here. About -5°C is very common here and -10° occasionally. Greetings from Belgium 🇧🇪

It has been my passion for 15 years so I am happy to answer all your questions.😊 Belgium is beautiful, but not as beautiful as truly tropical countries in the world. Belgium is also quite cold and often rainy...🤷‍♂ Palm trees are also not normal/native here. As you can see in my video, it is always a challenge to get the palms through the cold/wet winters. But I've been doing it for 15 years👍 The challenge of growing something unique is the fun thing about this hobby/passion. And it's so beautiful in the summer... The largest palm in my garden is indeed a canary palm. You are always welcome 💚 Indeed, I also have banana trees. The stems freeze every winter. But they come back every year with new shoots from the ground. They grow so quickly that they are 4 meters (13 feet) tall again in the summer Very nice to see that my video has reached South Korea.💚 When I look at your KZbin channel, it seems like you are someone very famous there? Thank you. Do you mean the sloping roofs of the boxes? That is much better for good drainage 😉 Last week I had 2 ice days and two nights of -7°C and one night of -5°C. But the Trachys have already seen colder temperatures here, sometimes -10 to -15°C. But luckily that doesn't happen often here. The leaves of the Trachys suffer damage from -10°C approximately...

Thanks Eddy, ja voor Belgische normen is dit niet zo'n grote tuin. Liefst had ik minimaal 2 maal zo groot gehad... maar ik mag zeker niet klagen 👍 Dit is zo'n kleine 350m² tuin, voor Nederland is dat groot inderdaad 😇

Die banaan zakt komende tijd wel gewoon in elkaar. In Mei komen de nieuwe scheuten wel weer terug boven 😉 Maar de huidige stammen zijn sowieso verloren 🤷‍♂️
