Use insulation all year... the same as you do in your home. Everybody says insulate in winter but I never see anybody saying to leave it on all year. You need to insulate in summer also. Insulation is what keeps a steady temperature and protects from heat and cold.

I understand the thick insul board for heat retention. Sure. But doesn't the top hole just let all the bees heat out anyway? If you got insulation, then you should (in theory) NOT have condensation, so why the hole? Do they need to get out in winter? Do they even want to go out in winter? They need ventilation when there is a need for ventilation, yes. But with the foam, will there even be condensation? Maybe the side walls would get damp. Just trying to figure this out. Thanks.

there's moisture in the air coming in the hive, the heat from the bees will turn it to water, land on the top cover and drip back down on the bees, the top hole will help it pass thru. they will leave the hive any time it's over 45..

You are right. There will not be any condensation on the ceiling with proper insulation. There doesn't need to be any upper ventilation. It lets out all the heat by creating a chimney effect. The science backs this. Bees need a steady warm temperature and very high humidity. They are not people. A bottom hole is all that is needed. You must not clean out the propolis ever. It protects the bees and the condensation on the walls carry the propolis to the bees as they drink the condensation. This is the water they live on in the winter. Modern beekeeping is destroying the honeybee. The solutions are the problems. Never open the brood chamber. Never.
