Use subtitles. That will help with the many names, places, and events you'll encounter. Pay attention to the opening credits. They'll show you where in Westeros the episodes events will take place. Understand that the dialogue is more important than the events, and the action and events are numerous indeed.

Why the heck do eejits think GoT is set in medieval times, its a fantasy series ffs.
@DarksideGmss0513 Жыл бұрын
@@firstsurname7099 it's a fantasy show yes but if you peel back the layers of it. It's more medieval than it is fantasy. It's not like a LOTR, or D&D where damn near everything is magic. It's got more of that gritty medieval feel to it because magic isn't abundant in this show. But when it does show up it's powerful.
@firstsurname7099 Жыл бұрын
@Darkside0513 'more medieval' WTF.... it is noooooooottttttt in anyway set in the European middle ages FFS. GOT is a fantasy book and TV series - that's it. Tolkein as a Prof of Anglo Saxon (the language not the history or culture) drew on this in creating languages and as he also studies classics and English literature and language so built a fictional world applying his knowledge, personal experiences as well his imagination. Martin studied journalism, played chess, read comics, taught English and wrote scifi and horror before GOT. Mkay. Its all fun and entertaining, but unequivocally neither are set during an historical time.
@twentytwo3052 Жыл бұрын
@@firstsurname7099 he literally never once said it was an actual mediaeval setting let alone a historically accurate one because obviously not its all fiction/fantasy in that aspect. he said "if you peel back the layers" its more medieval than fantasy when compared to others in the genre like LOTR, which is confirmed by show producers as they said multiple times they tried to keep fantasy and magic elements to a minimum to be marketable and friendlier to a wider audience outside of fantasy genre fans. as for the real world era equivalent to the game of thrones universe its based on some medieval, some middle, and early renaissance era Europe. for example not to spoil season 3 episode 9 but it was taken as inspiration from an event in late medieval times Scotland. so yes it is fantasy but it has real world inspiration from George Martin as you've mentioned.

"The man who passes the sentence should swing the sword" is such a powerful line, one I think can stay with you. Ned's explanation of why to his young son Bran, from the books the show is based on, is also moving: "If you would take a man's life, you owe it to him to look into his eyes and hear his final words. And if you cannot bear to do that, then perhaps the man does not deserve to die." Truly powerful stuff, something to make you think about power structures and how those in positions of power over the lives of others can be entirely removed from the consequences of their decisions.
