Friendly tip I wish had gotten when I started the show (up to you if you can be bothered or not as it would take something of an effort) is to start writing down new characters with their full name as you're introduced to them, who they're married to (and what "House" they originally came from), their childrens name, basically make a little family tree for all the so called Houses. It will save you A LOT of confusion as you go along, lol. Of course there are family trees you can just google, but I'd stay away from them as they may contain spoilers. If you do it yourself while watching you won't get any information ahead of time. :) Also I will say that while I liked the show from the start, it didn't get its hooks in me fully until EP6, so that's something to think about. There's a lot of exposition in the first episodes, but it's necessary as the world the author created is pretty much up there with Tolkien's Middle-Earth. Enjoy the ride, it's a wild one!

You have picked up a lot in the first episode, it's a steep learning curve so good job. One thing to note at 19:44 is yes the throne used to be Targaryen but the current king, Robert, is a Baratheon not a Lannister - his wife Cersei is a Lannister but the royal house is House Baratheon. Also I know you know small details about the ending but try not to linger on those, there's a long story to go before then and you'll find it more enjoyable to take it as it comes rather than trying to see how it gets to the endings you know.
@wrenbirdreactions4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for that info. So Cercei isn't known as Cersei Baratheon but still Cersei Lannister? Or no? I've taken the stance that just because i know a major detail of the show, I'm still very interested in how it came to be and what happened to put it in motion, these things alone still keep the story interesting to me.
@sam_c954 жыл бұрын
@@wrenbirdreactions Correct, she is known as Cersei Lannister. Your House and bloodline are most important in Westeros although marriages make for good political alliances. Women in Westeros DO actually change their surname despite their family name remaining important (e.g. Lady Catelyn Stark, Ned's wife, is a Tully by blood and used to be called Catelyn Tully). The one exception to the rule is if you marry into the royal family you are not allowed to take on the royal name, and this is the case for Cersei Lannister; the royal name stays in the royal bloodline. Fair enough, whatever suits you :) I won't risk further spoilers discussing it but I'm glad you're still interested despite knowing some spoilers at least!
@wrenbirdreactions4 жыл бұрын
@@sam_c95 That was something I wondered about. I noticed that Catelyn had the Stark surname, so I assumed that when it came to royalty the name stayed in the royal bloodline, and anyone that married into that kept their own. Thanks for the clarification.

Use subtitles, it'll help with all of the names, places, and events...and there are lots of them. Dispense with your modern beliefs and prejudices. You may not want to talk about 13 year olds getting married, but in the Middle Ages where the life expectancy for women was 43 and for men 48, your survival was dependent upon having children as soon as possible to support the household: and that's the royal families. For the poorer classes life expectancy was much shorter. Royal families used marriage typically as a way to build alliances and bind one family to another. People were typically betrothed before birth. As a female if you were not married well before 18 THAT was creepy, and in truth, menopause came decades earlier than today, making you a burden to your household if you hadn't started your own family. Some men could typically linger on without marrying.
@wrenbirdreactions4 жыл бұрын
I'll be using subtitles going forward for those exact reasons. I get what you're saying about the marriage thing, I agree that that was how things were done back then for those reasons. It's just ick to talk about kids in that sense, though as you said dispensing with our modern take on things is a must for this show.
@helgar7914 жыл бұрын

Great reaction! Do I hear a kiwi accent? This is grown up television & storytelling. It is complex, brutal and multi-layered. Yes - it is a good idea to take notes as you watch along. Definitely turn the subtitles on - there are a number of different languages and you'll want to follow along (plus there are just lots of things you'll pick up in general). Despite the ending of the show being very controversial (for which there are many points of view about) it is a a hell of a ride. Get yourself a moderator for the comments because sometimes we GoT fans get very enthusiastic and let slip spoilers. You do not want to be spoiled for this show! NB. (Hopefully not a spoiler). King Robert Baratheon (along with Ned) deposed the former King Aerys II Targaryen (the "Mad King") in a rebellion. Viserys & Daenerys are the children of that Mad King and are in exile across the Narrow Sea from Westeros (the Seven Kingdoms). Viserys wants to reclaim the throne in Westeros for the Targaryens.
