When I started this video I thought I stumbled into the Bass Fishing for The Hells Angels Tutorial when I seen Matt with the coat all zipped and bundled up, the toboggan pulled down and the beard squared up; then I realized the Hells Angels already know how to throw and sling lead and hard to pull a Skeeter FXR Apex with a Chopper...good video as always. Switched to Dirty Jigs probably 4-5 years ago bc of you and Tim and haven't looked back. Best jigs on the market, but how come I haven't seen the Canterbury Crunch before? Gotta order some of those this evening

Good stuff. If yens haven't already, try to set up a conversation with Tom Monsoor from LaCrosse WI. As you know he's a jig legend. No I never met or spoke with him.... only know of him. Then again.... maybe yens have already been able to talk with him. In my lifetime I've been able to sit down and talk with a couple "Old Timer Legends". An hour of their time is better than 10 years of experimenting. No... Not meant as a insult to your jig fishing knowledge/skills. As always thanks for the vids and your time.

The 3" Big Bite Baits Craw Worm is my favorite micro craw plastic. The little craw body section is a hollow tube. Leave on those extra segments at the tail when using it as a jig trailer. Or, pull those extra segments off the tail and use it as a Ned Rig. This is perhaps the most realistic shaped crawfish plastic, and in gin clear Great Lakes water, when visibility is 30 feet and you need to use 4-pound test fluorocarbon as a 20-foot leader, that REALISM can REALLY MATTER.

I went fishing this last Saturday and had gotten hung up in a tree that had floated to the middle of the river I fish and settled on bottom in about 4-5 ft of water. I was tied braid directly to the jig hoping for a big bite in the mid-50’s murky water. I wrapped the braid around a thick stick that was nearby and PULLED, figuring I was going to either break the connection knot or bend the hook. The “weak link” was not the braid or the hook but the weight of the tree and the suction of the mud. I put as much “ass” into pulling that line and the tree actually rotated and came towards me a few feet before giving me back my jig. The hook was slightly tipped up and the point sharp as it was when it came out of the package. The jig was a Dirty Jigs Pitching jig in Super Matt Brown. I’m seriously impressed with the hook on that jig, I cannot fathom needing a “No Jack” hook when the regular ones are that strong.

Btw, I know this is crazy but I like throwing a football head in thicker wood or roots, it seems that it never gets wedged just needs to be bumped against the cover until either a fish snatches it up or the jig managed to crawl through.
@midwestfischerman Жыл бұрын
@Richard Bossman That makes sense to me. It sounds like your roots are like the Chicago chunk rock I fish with a football head jig. You DO NOT want to get wedged in between those slabs.

I got you on the explanation for the hula grub. Coming from a southerner thats trapped my fair share of craws. In the winter the craws will scoot on the bottom and bury their butts between warm rocks. That hula skirt mimics those back legs trying to dig in and latch to warm rock.
@Milehighsnake98 Жыл бұрын
Matt, I have done that 1 handed retrieve all year long with a ton of success. It forces me to fish slower.
@midwestfischerman Жыл бұрын
Other than newer plastics that are now super anatomically correct, Hula Grubs were the plastic trailer that mimics a crawfish the closest. "Claws" are up in the back, "crawly legs" are up front. I like the Chompers brand, also SOFT, and very stinky with GARLIC!
@manifestgtr Жыл бұрын
I’m with you, Matt. I’m equally obsessed with jig fishing. Not only do I have boxes of jigs…I have entire boxes and crates filled with skirt material, various jig heads and o-rings. I’ve gotten to the point where I think I’m going to start *tying* them…and I mean tying in the fly fishing sense. There are a few smallmouth guys who do it and I have most of the gear already due to my other habit (fly fishing for brook trout). With my jig making, the only component that feels like it could use improvement are the rubber o-rings. I could go the wire route but tying seems more interesting to me.

Matt, anytime you talk about your passion for jig fishing, you explain how it surpasses your fanaticism for everything else you use. Today, you gave a nod to swimbaits as being second.🥈 I think to myself, JEEZ, aren't you the guy who weighed out the grams of replacement split rings and treble hooks for JERKBAITS?!?!? And JERKBAITS may only be THIRD or FOURTH in YOUR FANATICISM??? That's saying something.

Come fish it sometime.

Thanks Matt. No worries about most of this not applying to us down here in Florida; I still sat through it all. Chatterbaits have been the thing for me lately, "cold" water and all, but I have done well with jigs and twin-tail trailers this winter as well. I mainly use the Big Bite Baits twin-tail when I am just goofing around with a small jig at one of the Local Ponds. No frog fish yet this year, but I have had a couple swipe at it. All in all, the bite down this way has been very good for me so far this year. Don't take my word for it, though: load up the caravan, take 75 south and come see for yourself. Thanks again!

Not the middle finger Matt, the ring finger! 😆 Too funny, I was on the lake last week when those teens and 20's came through Arkansas trying to think of anything besides how darn cold I was and I hyper focused on Flippin the reel with my finger and which finger seems to work better. 🤣 The things we do to stay out and catch fish. Anyhow, it's the ring finger cause you have better control of the rod for a hookset with a jig. I have Rheumatoid Arthritis so maybe that has something to do with it. Tight lines buddy! Edit...BTW...that Hula Grub worked well last week with the Z-man football jig when they wouldn't bite a jig. Been using that HG since the early 90's for finicky SM. That Z-man micro jig with the mini bugs work great too, and it's got a small guard to keep it from hanging on rock.
