Join me as I dive into winter camping and explore a section of Allegheny National Forest. There was a lot more snow than I thought there would be but I had a lot of fun.

The main thing is to be safe out there! If you pulled a muscle, or the gear isn't working as needed, it is best to call it an overnighter!!!

in winter camping/outdoorings the best way to stay with warms is to find liquid waters. liquid waters are only 32 degree fahrenheits, which has many more degrees than the air, so which means that best thing to do is lie down in the waters and this will give you many more degrees. make sure to wear all the clothes that you carry to add to the warming effect, and to hold more waters when you get out of the waters, that they may can continue to insulate you. this technique works for me, and so can you!

Quick tip: for sleeping in winter you want your whole body in your sleeping bad except for your mouth. You want your breath to go outside of the bag that way it doesn't collect and form condensation in the bag.

Went out the other day, too. Had the same problem with condensation. Before I went into the tent I lined up the remaining coal from the fire infront of the tent. That helped alot. Warmed the tent right up. ...didn´t last the whole night unfortunately.

+De. Sch I made myself a little frost bib out of some polar fleece that I attach to my hammock ridgeline. My thoughts it will catch condensation from my mouth/nose before it gets to my quilts. $4 for a yard of material on amazon.

Have you tries using Dead Man Anchors for your stakes? If you do it right they stay very well. That is how I stake my tent in winter and they hold so good I have to dig them out. I also suggest bringing a good saw. Best wood to cut is pine that is dead and leaning on another tree.
@FrozensAdventures
@FrozensAdventures 9 жыл бұрын
I haven't tried that technique yet but I do know about how to do it. There wasn't the right kind of snow to pack it down over the bag. It was really fluffy snow and I easily got down to the ground and got a few stakes in.

I don't know how I missed this vid! Love Minister Creek. Snow always deeper than you think it's going to be. 4x4 vehicle a must I have found after being stuck up there in a unforeseen snowstorm (like 2 ft, no shit). I now bring extra food in the truck, just in case.

Jason, good job to you for tackling this trail in winter; the rocks in places must have been slick. I have been here many times. Hope you can get back in warmer weather. Did you notice the natural spring just before dropping down to Triple Fork camp? You can fill up there without filtering.
@FrozensAdventures

I probably was so focused on keeping an eye out for trail markers, I didn't see a natural spring. I'll be heading back there in the spring/summer

Outdoor Adventures The spring is along the section that Minister Creek Trail shares with the North Country Trail, just east of and just before you drop down into Triple Fork camping area. Look to the right of the trail and you will see the water coming right out of the hillside. Its waters flows right across the trail and downhill to the left. I fill up by the large rock right where the water comes directly from underground. It is not publicized on the maps but people have filled up their water bottles here for many years. A large group from our church comes and camps every year at Triple Fork and this is our source of drinking water. There is something amazing about natural springs. Way uphill and to the right of the spring, keep going uphill maybe a quarter a mile or so, off-trail, are nice rock formations, go past the first set to the second larger ones. Very large. The teen age boys from our church call them "Castle Rock." Also near the Minster Creek overlook is an unusual boulder; a "moving stone". It is very large yet can be wiggled. It must rest not flat but on a point of sorts on its bottom. It is down and to the right of the overlook, along an unmarked path. It is very close but not easy to find. 41*37.614' N, 079*09.793'W.

Outside for the most part. It's from my breath coming down on the bag. I made a frost bib out of a square of fleece and it works very well to reduce/nearly eliminate the issue.

Cool. I have one more question for you. Do you wear your boots while you sleep in a hammock or do you take them off. If you do take them off where do you put them. Is there something you do to keep bugs/ rodents out? Winter vs summer I'm sure is a bit different but just wondering.
@FrozensAdventures
@FrozensAdventures 9 жыл бұрын
***** I leave my boots on a small sheet of tyvek directly under my hammock. that way i can step out of the hammock and sit down and put them on if need (make sure to check for creepy crawlies and rodents). some people tie the laces together and leave them on the ridge line but I like being able to access them without stepping on the ground if needed. Another thing you can do is hang them in a grocery bag and the the bag to the inside of the ridge-line and move them down at your feet. check out this link for some additional info. He's a pretty well known hammock camper, he's crazy as a bat but has some awesome tips. kzbin.info/www/bejne/nGrHoHqugL-jf6Mm1s

Quick question about drinking water at/near Minister Creek. I'm going there in two weeks, would it be safe to drink water from the creek(s) using a Sawyer Squeeze.
@FrozensAdventures
@FrozensAdventures 8 жыл бұрын
Yea, anywhere in the united states you will be fine with the sawyer. The only thing it doesn't filter out is viruses which are usually found in other countries. In which case you would have to use chemicals. I've never had a problem filtering on any of my trips. Just be careful to not get the dirty water anywhere near your clean drinking containers.

Cool video, My brother and I hike and camp the Morrison trail, which is just a little north of minister creek, every winter. We were actually out there new years eve to new years day this year. We made a few videos if your interested. (we are currently editing the newest one). just to comment on your video- the winter miles are always so much harder than you expect them to be. Every year i am amazed at how tired i am at the end of the trip.

Snow hiking looks grueling! Bummer about the cramp and the gunshot (poacher?). The outtakes were great, especially Josh's trekking pole ninja arts. RE: your response to Debbie, I didn't expect reddit to be of much use, but it really surprised me. There are two, TWO! prominent outdoor subreddits for my state chock full of backpacking locales to add to my list. In addition to all the advice I've gathered from this channel, I also have to thank you for the occasional self-reflection. The honesty always comes through in what you share with us, and your parting words in this video are stirring.
