This is an easy watercolor tutorial anyone can paint! I am using Lemon Yellow, Aliz.Crimson, Ultramarine Blue and Burnt Sienna. I am using a #6 round, 1/2"flat and 1" wash brush. As always feel free to substitute for the paint and brushes you have on hand. I am painting on a 140# Strathmore watercolor card.

I appreciate your reminders that it's "just a greeting card," etc. I have not painted or drawn in the past due to my own expectations of perfection, but your videos are great reminders that it's only paper and just to go for it. Hry Violet, if you come up with a painting you love you can always have it photocopies on cardstock and you can make your cards that way too if you don't want to paint them all!

thefrugalcrafter . Yes, I've been meaning to do that too with pictures I paint on slate. A lady gave me a huge stack of slate to paint on and I'm slowing going through them. I've also considered doing small postcard size quilted Christmas cards but that too is just one of the many ideas that float through my busy brain.

Love this! Just got done doing this one, and I am actually quite happy with it, and it was totally fun. I have been looking at this video a few times, and , I don't know why, but I felt so confident to just do it now. It must be because I have been painting with your tutorials, taking your classes, listening better to your instructions, and it all makes more sense now. Also, I am not afraid of it not being perfect like yours...I can even change it a bit now, and not freak out! Great tutorial, thanks! I think, however, that when abbreviating the year in your signature, the apostrophe should be before the 14 as it stands in place of the absent 20. ( '14 - like it stands in for the absent O in don't = do not )

Very nice! Though I am light years away from being as good as you I thank you for the inspiration to give it a try through your relaxed attitude towards painting! Is mixing the colors a talent you learn over time? Getting the right colors seems to be a struggle for me but I don't use expensive watercolors so that may be the problem. Anyway, wonderful painting thanks for sharing!

It helps to arrange you colors in rainbow order on your palette, for instace a red that is more similar to purple would be next to the blue where as a red more similar to orange would be near yellow so it makes sence when you mix. A lot of people have trouble with this, I think I need to do a color theory video. Cheap paint is great for learning to mix colors, you will not worry so much about wasting it that way, I recommend that students start with a set of Reeves paint first (you can get 12 colors for $6 at the craft store) because by the time you have painted through that set of tubes you will know how to mix color and you won't waste the good stuff:) Reeves is also non-toxic so if you are ready to upgrade sooner you can gift the paints to your kids or grandkids!

Had a hard time getting the black. I didn't have ultramarine blue. Only had Prussian blue . Still I'm happy with the final painting.

Prussian blue is greenish so add some crimson into it (along with the burnt seinna) to blacken:)

adrianna collins collect slow and learn how to use one medium before adding more supplies. I recommend Blick art materials for paint and paper because they usual;ly have the best prices and good coupons online.

We're having a really hot summer here in Melbourne, Australia. It's going to be over 100 degrees again this weekend. Lindsay, could you recommend a good round watercolor brush. Does it have to be Kolinsky sable?

No I would not recommend Kolinski Sable for two reason, for one it is a by product of the fur trade and as a vegan I can not support that, also they are crazy expensive. Nowadays they make great quality synthetic brushes so you do not have to sacrifice quality to save money and your conscience. I was using a #6 Cotman round today, it has a great snap, a fine detailed point and it holds a good about of water and paint and it is under $6 at Blick: www.dickblick.com/products/winsor-and-newton-cotman-watercolor-brushes/ I also like the Aqualon and Majestic brushes from Royal & Langnickel because they have acrylic handles so a forgetful artist like me can leave her brush in water overnight and not have the handle swell and come loose like wood handled brushes do. There are many reasonably priced synthetic brushed on the market, happy painting!

Kaz I bought some golden taklon Royal & Langnickel brushes from Spotlight. also got some of the Aqualon brushes from a face painting artist supplies online shop here in Oz. they are superb, and almost like drawing with a pencil..spot on

just want to add that the blue brushes I bought from Spotlight have been disappointing, with brush hairs coming out. My husband thinks perhaps the ferrule has not been pressed properly so will give that a try. LIndsay likes the Majestic Royal Langnickel (sp?) as well as the Aqualon.

I just bought a couple of Princeton Neptune synthetic squirrel brushes from the Michaels by me for $5 each and they are regularly around $20 each. I have noticed that if you look around you can get good brushes for great prices if you wait for them to go on sale. I have seen several youtube videos with artists talking about the Neptune line of brushes and saying that they don't notice a difference between them and real animal bristles. I haven't tried them but am excited to since people say they hold as much water and paint as a natural fur brush, which I don't have because I don't believe in supporting the fur trade.
