Thank you for this! So well shown and explained! Your tip from earlier to be loose not tight is helpful. I have the Koi set and one of the watercolor postcards that fit in the easel lid. I hope to try this painting shortly. I am trying to make the commitment to paint or what least make art of some type every day! I am reading a book about the benefit to becoming a better artist as a result. Painting small and often is the the theme. You are an inspiration! I do it all on the bed because of pain and fatigue from FIBRO and other issues, but you make a lot of examples simplified by your limited palette, enthusiasm and spread joy to me! Thank you bunches! I was born on PEI to missionary parents from Alabama, then lived in New Brunswick until I was 13 1/2. We once vacationed in Bangor, and once on Cadillac Mountain. I feel I know your environment. Now have just arrived to our home in Chattanooga, Tn, after spending winter and spring in Key West for our 12th year. We have joyfully had children, grands, and great grands here from the moment we arrived last Thursday night until last night, (8days) so my crafting supplies that I brought home are beside my bed in tote bags, and hopefully will be organised in four wheel trolleys I bought for that purpose. I look at your site several times a day to see if you have put something new, and I rewatch previous demos! I feel you care about your student peeps, and just thank you again!!

Hi Lindsay! Happy belated Birthday! I just wanted to share this: I have this box with the neon and metallic paints, but I really needed to condense my Mission Gold selection. So, I carefully removed the entire plastic tray... and was able to add 22 of my full pans! I used glue dots. I have 2 different boxes of these tube paints, in 2 metal palettes- so using them was overwhelming. I chose my favorites of the Pure Pigment colors and saved the Koi paints elsewhere. Thanks for the tip! I'll jump back in here and try this pond scene!

I have watched this video a few times... I Love it... I love "today's " water color! It's far less stressful than the "1980s full rule, dry between colors" water color techniques I Could Not reform to... I often say, Art classes Almost destroyed my inner artist. I am all natural, unconventional, and, starting to sell pieces, at 42 years old. Not too bad, in the grand scheme of things.

Hi Lindsay! Thanks for sharing this..... I haven't touched my watercolours for over five years, I felt stuck in a rut with my class and struggled to achieve the spirit or essence of a watercolour with a looseness that I desired. And painting landscapes and capturing that moment in nature was important to me. So, I have just watched this video and I feel inspired again! I love the idea of the simplicity with the water brush and thought the Koi set was ideal. I don't care if it's not professional standard pigments !!! I can leave those locked up someplace and enjoy the freedom of no pressure and NOT seeking perfection! I am straight on to Amazon UK and ordering it tonight! I think this will work so neatly and be fun when I go out in my campervan! So thank you very much!

Keep re-painting the same painting daily, file them by date once dry. Look at each one and work out what you're doing wrong / not enough water, too much paint etc - show someone experienced if unsure. After 2 weeks you will see improvement, it's much easier with same painting over and over as you get better at some parts of it each time until it looks as it should. Never fear painting - just slap it on and have fun - it's only paper, after all.
@daphnecampbelljinnette68088 жыл бұрын
Great advice! I should do that, too!

Gorgeous Linday! I have to say, the one drawback of this set for me that, though it was great when I first started, is that, as you said, the colors didn't mix very purely. The Greeny blue in the third row is what I believe they call Cerulean, Ultramarine is next to it, and the second row is cobalt, but none with perhaps the exception of Ultramarine really match a true artist pigment well. I also had trouble mixing a sap-like green from the four in the set (the viridian & phthalo green are strong & the paler yellow green is pretty light). I'd still use this in a bind, but my Turner & Daniel Smith equipped Pike palette will always be my first choice. I'd even still bring the Pike on vacation if I did a pencil or ink sketch in the field & added color later.
@RichBoden8 жыл бұрын
A lot of Phthalo blue plus a filler and granulation medium used for Cerulean (should be a cobalt pigment), ditto Cobalt Blue. Viridian will be Phthalo Green BS with a granulation medium and the other Phthalo Green will be the YS, I'm guessing. Ultramarine is now cheap to make so student kits do get the real thing, albeit with filler. Cobalt pigments are costly so never included. When I buy student half pan sets for en plein air my caveat is that I have to be able to remove and swap colours as I want rid of black/white etc immediately, of course.
@Joe_Maysky8 жыл бұрын
+Rich Boden thanks always! Unrelated to this video, but what do you think about Bismuth Orthovanadate for a cool yellow Rich? It seems like it pulls a little less green visually than some of the nickel based cooler yellows, which I don't mind and use to my advantage when mixing but used purely can pull a bit too green for my liking.
@RichBoden8 жыл бұрын
+Joe Maysky I have Bismuth Vanadate Yellow but seldom use it. It is VERY bright and being opaque and as you say, very cold, it muds quite easily. It mixes ok with transparent dyes - Phthalo Blue GS, Phthalo Green YS, Quinacridone Gold, some transparent cold reds like Quin Rose mix with it too, but you get somewhat earthy orange-browns, which are not un-useful. It can sometimes separate from mixes but oxgall remedies that. I would avoid minerals for mixes like Cobalt Blue etc - the over-granulation is annoying and pseudo-muddy. My main cold yellow is Nickel Titanate, which is not grey at all unless you use it very thick - a little goes a long way, for a mineral pigment. Hansa Yellows can be useful also if you prefer a dye. Nickel Azo Yellow (a dye not a mineral) is a nice warmer yellow and a good alternative to most Gamboges which contain it plus other pigments that tend to make Gamboges give muddy mixes. There is a lemon I have yet to try - a praseodymium silicate - which granulates.
@RichBoden8 жыл бұрын
+Joe Maysky I'll do a video on it for Colour Chemistry - I need to do one on yellows in general.
@Joe_Maysky8 жыл бұрын
+Rich Boden fantastic. I need to look up the pigment composition of the "Permanent Lemon" that I have from Turner-- I'm less of a fan of it the more I use it sadly due to its green leanings, so I guess I just want something a little more neutral. I like the Cad Yellow Lights as well but as we know they're more opaque.
@karemmathes14438 жыл бұрын
Love it. Can wait to try it.

That's such a cute painting - I'm (tomorrow!) swapping the 'Cadmium' hues in my unused Cotman Sketcher Set I got for £7.79 in the sale (12 half pans), going to bin the black and white and replace with some colours I really like to use - probably Cobalt Blue and Indian Red. I may swap the Viridian for Perylene Green and maybe get Perylene Maroon in there too as they make amazing neutral greys and are fun for painting plants with. I'm going to (today!) make a Weirich Watercolour Block and carry that set and block in my work bag at all times so if I catch a nice sunset on the way home, I can stop and paint it. Easy.

Have a look at the type of sponge I found and used in my v recent Cotman en plein air video - it cleans waterbrushes amazingly as it is quite abrasive (it is a facial cleansing sponge but it is identical to the yellow sponges used in soldering) - you may find having a piece en plein air handy for brush and palette cleaning.

I'm learning watercolor too. There's always an awful stage, but I've done enough to know that it gets better if I work through it. If I'm frustrated, I just walk away and come back later. It's been great so far. Try doing a single item small painting before tacking something like landscape. That might help. I've painted everything from a slice of bread ( yep, that's right lol ) to a piece of cake, a shoe, s bird's nest with eggs, a goblet and a single flowers. I'm loving watercolor now. Doing items that didn't require a composition was a good confidence builder for me.

+Rose Ryan Thank you so much for your help😆 I was attempting to draw what I thought would be a simple flower, thinking it'd look better once I painted it. LOL, no way. But I absolutely understand where you're coming from as I've thought to just start again with something simple and practice over and over until the item is at LEAST recognizable LOL, maybe even making it to the ugly stage hahahaha😊 Thanks again Rose (my mom's name too) for your encouragement!!
@RichBoden8 жыл бұрын
My best tip honestly is find a simple (in the sense of 10 minutes long, a few colours) painting like this or Lindsay has lovely little fishing boat one somewhere and lighthouse one too - all 3-colour easy ones. Paint it every day and when dry, put them in a file with the date on each one. After 2 weeks of the same painting each day and each day trying to analyse your mistakes (show it to people with experience, if you don't know what you did wrong - no one will laugh at you - folk want to help) you WILL see serious improvement. It's a good way to iron out a lot of technique errors quite fast.
