Honest truth? You can fix your old vacuum headlights for about half of what the electric conversion costs. $400-$500 is RIDICULOUS just to get the lights to raise. I fix them all the time, and usually the issue is leaky actuators, which cost about $20 each to rebuild. Sometimes more parts can be bad but that is not always the case. Also, the headlights should stay lifted in the up position without the use of zip ties. IF you have to use them, that means you are missing springs or the knee lever mechanism that locks into place. Too bad your not near Texas I could fix your lights in an afternoon.

Sounds like a good project to do as a sort of mega weekly update in lieu of one of the monthly episodes you don't have the content for. If this guy could fix them in an afternoon they could probably entertain your endless photo messages and questions for a couple weeks as you figure out how to fix them. Worst case scenario you can't fix them, the car is back where it is today and we all get to point and laugh along with you during the video as you tried to fix them (and maybe someone pipes up and you get the missing piece to make them right).

I'm down for a skype call to help them out. Would make awesome content for their channel. PM me if interested.

Nice, I was thinking "TheCorvetteBen" would know how to fix those headlights reliably, then I scrolled down.

You guys are certainly not dumb, it's nice to see folks like myself just figuring things out. I'm happy to wait for your updates. Someone used my c3 as a winter driver which meant alot of rust repair but not nearly as much as Reidus had to do on his datsun. Do whatever YOU want with your vette, and don't be afraid to spend where you need to(motor, safety). I have a bit of a bias sorry, after all that work I love that vette so much more, but damn is it pricey. Winter is almost over, so just wait until you get some rain to wash the salt off the roads, check the weather, then safety check the vette n go nuts! Reason I say safety check is I had squishy brakes and it was a seal that failed in the mastery cyl and I almost died twice on the way home.

...I like the fact that you'll admit when you screw up (and hell...who hasn't screwed up before, right?)...that shows a lot of character...I've definitely enjoyed watching your videos...and some of the stuff you two have done and/or attempted...you definitely have bigger tesla coils than most

I didn't even know those plexiglass housings existed. That's a neat little piece of history. Don't let other people tell you how to build your car :)

I sorta dig the look of the fixed headlights with the clear cover, still might do it myself, so I say go for it. As for the Corvair, trying to fix things in a sorta ratty garage with minimal weather protection can put you in a state of mind where you don’t make the most well thought out decisions.

HA yea not as inclined to work on winter projects when my ass is half frozen working in a cold garage.

Probably late by now, but ever thought of rigging some kind of mechanical actuator. Like maybe a cable that runs from the lights to your dash, where you pull it and lights go up!
@TheDutchTexan6 жыл бұрын
Fix the vacuum actuators... Keeping those cars mostly original from the outside is key. Those pop up headlights are awesome. Those Plexiglas headlight covers only make sense on racecars IMHO. I have seen some C3 vettes with the headlight buckets that fit perfectly inside the existing opening. That would be the only way to go if you HAD to have fixed lights.
@crownvicca6 жыл бұрын
Rectangular headlight swap for the Vette or better yet have them permanently shut and install a set of lights behind the lower grilles to keep aerodynamics.
@joevette62943 жыл бұрын
Actually youre right cheaper than replacing actuators and will get that L-46 fly with less drag on front end!! and when finished put a couple of coats of expensive wax itll glide in the wind!!!👍👍👍
@slowdaze6 жыл бұрын
You guys should do a short Roadtrip to Deboss garage in the ford to check out his Audi! I also vote for having operating headlights on the Vette.

I quite like the plexiglass covers, my only worry would be UV damage to them over time.

miata actuators. They have a crank bypass if the electrical doesn't work. It'll keep the look and it's safe.
@nathanmaret24656 жыл бұрын
Keep up the good work, guys! Not sure exactly what the rules are around the "no half-episode" thing... We know some of the stuff you do is pretty heavy duty / time consuming, and I for one would be OK with seeing something done over a number of episodes - as long as each episode had some quantifiable progress! Excited to see what's coming this summer!

Reidus and Cletus The Show and honestly, I think if you build the rest of the car right, you could make those stationary headlights really cool. They are definitely unique!

tomakze you probably just need the vacuum switch for the lights and plug everything

I agree with the CorvetteBen.... Don't disfigure her with that plastic kit. Just get the vacuum system to work. It will be reliable.

Go for the electric motors...you won't regret it plus you won't have to drill into the body. Or just stick with the zip ties...and spend your $ on a new painless wiring harness. Easy to install ( just time consuming)....oh and just rattle can the Datsun with some primer already!

hmmmmmm.......options are 1.buy a kit that requires you to drill 8 holes in your fiberglass front end to mount some ugly covers (NO) 2. buy miata motors to make your headlights work electronically (hmmmm) or buy a cheap rebuild kit for your headlight actuators and make a factory system work for a fraction of the cost............ yeah fix the vacuum actuators
