First recommendation for you, my dear friend, is the actual Quraan. Pick the Abdullah Yusuf Ali translation. If you want a more men-of-letters style of translation, try the M. Pickthall translation.

Shaykh, I find your recent statements on the ongoing culture wars pretty interesting. Though I think your negative response to trans people seems a little odd given that there are marja' who do accept (for lack of a better word) 'transgenderism', you are right on this: Islam does seem to be this new pathway for those in the west who feel alienated by the constant changes in social narratives. Whilst transgenders have always been around, so it's not that hard to accept them within the confines of a logical adult, the conceptions of non-binary, the new language regarding sexuality, is obviously new. And to accept them wholeheartedly without much reflection, simply because the cultural elite deems it to be so, is a kind of spiritual authoritarianism. And so given that Islam is rather simple (One God), and doesn't have the cultural baggage as Christianity does in this region, it makes a lot of sense that people are converting. I, for one, am actually kind of glad that we're experiencing this phenomena in the US where those that leave the religion are equal to those that are coming in. As soon this religion will be filled with those that are here not because of cultural norms, but because of the universal values exemplified within the Quran and Sunnah. If there's one thing to be excited about for the future, it is this.

i must say though that the analyses of dalrymple conveyed in his essays regarding muslims in west europe and especially about islam itself, is quite banale and lacking, as his analyses show, any serious reading of islamic history and its sciences... but expecting somewhat academic rigour on these subjects from a medical specialist who writes essays is asking for a little bit too much i guess... he's fun to read tho
