It's also based on a sub plot from The Brother's Karamazov, as well. Love this film. Great films that are long do not feel long. And this is one of them.

Not for everyone or shall I say not to be watched with expectations of a regular film, you must be in a particular mindset. An awesome film, Ceylan is a master of his craft.

Watched this movie in a film festival few years ago. It was a strange experience because it interested me very well and at the same time, it made me sleepy too. Felt a little bit guilty about that at first but understood later that it's natural to feel a little bit sleepy during some movies. And I can't resist this joke: the title has been apt for me, because it was December and I was sleepy. Now about two scenes you mentioned: 1. The scene where Aydin says that this place is not for everyone. This can be Ceylan himself talking about this movie as well? I think that he says the same in his interviews: my films are not for everyone. 2. Barking of dogs: Can this also be a metaphor? That he doesn't care for what others say or think, hinting a "let the dogs bark" attitude, may be?

Having seen Drive My Car, I feel this has a similar tone and style with winter sleep. And I liked DMC so if you enjoyed winter sleep you might also like this movie as well

hello D. 959 Schubert's sonata is in the movie of Bresson "Au hasard Balthazar" (1966), and Ceylan is an admirer of Bresson's cinema. The metaphore with the grey horse captured at the beginning of the movie can be a way of understanding this particular piece of Schubert. Schubert's musical langage is known for long developments, and working with changing major to minor scales and reciprocally to increase (and reverse) the emotions. (I confess I was waiting for your comments on this movie). the 15 minutes long dialogue between the sister and her brother in the middle of the movie are a masterpiece. the impact of schubert's music in this movie is for me the same as schumann's in Fanny och Alexander. As in Bergman's masterpieces no one knows the truth, as actors, the characters are masks

I don't know about the symbolism but stray dogs are common in Turkey. As for the religious aspect of Aydin's relationship with his wife (and the age difference), there isn't any probably, both of them are depicted as westernized and secular Turks. Among his movies, this one has the least references to Turkish culture, so less is lost in translation.

I’ve just read a book called Saddletramp by Jeremy James recounting his trek across Turkey on horseback and he mentions the nocturnal ritual and phenomena of barking dogs that circle rural Turkish villages. Being a great admirer of the catalogue of films by Nuri Bilge Ceylan I appreciate any other recommendations

I enjoyed this review, but this could be as close as I get to watching the movie, which does look beautiful. At over three hours, my wife will never sit still for this. She's my movie partner, but our tastes diverge when it comes to films in this genre. I appreciated vicarious enjoyment of this movie. Thank you.

one of my fav movies, hv seen 2 other Ceylan but this is the one that captures me, not sure why, whole movie like a slow unraveling, and the discord b/n the couple is so natural, those little errors/differences that creep into relations and slowly gnaw them to pieces. setting is tranquil yet also eerie or odd ,,, remnants of an older world w/ people just hanging on, each in a sort of mortal struggle between their dignity and their hubris ... to use the tired phrase, something about the human condition. ty

If you like Nuri Bilge Ceylan and don't watch his other movies yet, I recommend you " Once Upon a Time in Anatolia" and his last movie "The Wild Pear Tree". They are my favorites and I'm sure you'll like them as well. I like how you explain the symbols in the movie.

i'll be honest, about those barking of dogs, i only notice just because you said it (maybe because i'm from Turkey and in Turkey lots of stray animals, actualy just now i am writing this i am hearing barkings xD). I realised that Aydın sees a dead dog and decide to face with "adversiry" teacher dude (which his wife was admiring).. maybe dead dog symbolises his guard is going down
