I feel like these are the episodes where the show really starts to shine. We have gotten to know the characters and the world enough by now but they continue to build on the story and their growth in such a fun and interesting way. Whenever i get someone new to watch the season I tell them straight up that episodes 1-3 are very slow/rough and can be not super interesting but to at least get through episode 5 and then it really kicks off.

For me it was that conversation with Roku upping the stakes that got me glued to the series. Really a couple episodes in the near future really solidified my love for the series. The first time I watched this show a long time ago I knew almost nothing about it and had a lot of expectations from how other cartoon shows did things. All I knew is all of my peer group highly recommended it and there was a kid with an arrow on his head. Before episode 8 I still got the impression of a story that could wind up being a lot of small, mostly self-contained daily adventures with a loose overarching story. What this episode did for me was up the stakes to an insane degree with the reveal about the comet and strongly hit the feeling of the boosters being activated on a much more intense story arc that would develop and resolve by the end. In a way this was both the perfect transition for the tone of the story and for Aang as a character. This feeling would only be further solidified in several of the following episodes, and I was even more excited as things turned out to be more nuanced, multi-layered, and well-crafted than I ever imagined.

Same. I thought Hei Bei was pretty neat, and then there was Uncle Iroh seeing Aang in the spirit world from the regular world. That blew my mind. Completely sold on the show from that point onward. The next episode of course really upped the stakes, too, which was awesome. I then binged the entire show in about a week. Before these two episodes, I wasn't sure if I really believed the hype and didn't know if I was going to continue with it.

I love the writing in this show. They don't need to hold your hand and say 'Uncle Iroh is a deeply spiritual person', they just show you that he has good rapport with a forest mouse and can see the Avatar and spirit dragon as they fly over. Part of why I love the animated series over the live action is this subtly and respect for the audience. In the live action they'd probably do something like Uncle Iroh monologing about how he could always see spirits and that it's because of how in-tune he is with nature (and maybe he does, I stopped on ep 2. Couldn't do it.)

These were the episodes that sold me on the show when I first watched it. The show had been pretty childish so far, and seemed aimless. But then the Hei Bei spirit was a really cool bit of world building to drop in. And then, what a big shock: silly comedy relief lazy Uncle Iroh saw spirit Aang fly by on a spirit dragon when no one else could see them. Uncle Iroh is a lot more than he appears. The show completely had me after that. I was completely bought in. And of course, in the next episode, we find out Aang has a deadline and the journey won't be so aimless after all. The show only gets better from here. There's another upcoming episode that is also really significant, which I think wins over any last holdouts who make it to that point without already loving the series. ATLA has a lot going on in it, and some really deep stuff in the lore and in the backstories of the characters. It's ostensibly a kids' show, and it does tell the story in a way that is approachable to kids of a certain age, but ATLA shows that just because something is made for kids doesn't mean it can't be really good, or give even adults a lot to think about.

Good idea to finish the animated show before moving on to the Netflix Live Action. Opinions on the live action show are definitely mixed, but I think a lot of that comes down to budget constraints and a lot of writing changes to compensate for that (albeit not all are for budget reasons), so hopefully that'll be resolved with season 2 and 3 that (hopefully) will have higher budgets. I also very much hope S2 and S3 have more episodes, even if they have to shorten each episode slightly, there are just so many character developing side-plots throughout those two seasons.

I'm glad you both decided to watch the animated series first, I'm not going to be someone to say you should avoid the live-action or that it's horrible or irredeemable. But what I will say is that the animated series is given such love and attention. Each of the forms of bending is an actual real world martial art, physical movements portrayed as accurately as possible with the aid of a martial arts consultant. Even though the clothing and architecture styles are simplified to be animated everything is still based off a real world counterpart, real actual cultures from around the world mostly based in Eastern culture. Of course it didn't set out to be a model of representation for these cultures but this was kind of wild back then for an animated series generally intended for children. I think it shows just how thoughtful the creators were when making this world, there was effort put into this. For the live action, without spoilers, I will say it feels very much like a high budget Syfy channel show or just your average Netflix series. And there is merit to that, lots of casual viewers are enjoying the show for what it's intended to be. But for those that have been watching and rewatching, debating and discussing the series for the past almost 20 years it feels like such a departure from the original content. Don't let those voices dissuade you from eventually watching the live action if you really want to, it's worth while in it's own right after watching the other versions to give a fair comparison. In any case, hope you enjoy the rest of this series!

Honestly the most annoying change to me in the Live Action is fight choreography. Named characters still use a variety of martial arts, but everybody else is using a lot of Wing Chung, I guess because American right choreographers love Wing Chung in general.
