I started layering pots several years ago and it has saved me so much money - using the free wood chips and rabbit poo that I have already in my yard. This way I don't have to buy so much potting soil from the store. I only need about 6 in of potting soil at the top. Make sure if you do this you only use cold compost or well rotted composted manure. You don't want to burn seeds and seedlings. I used to just plant right into the landscape. Recently I had a back injury so I decided to uppot all my seedlings. And you know what I like it better. I still will continue to do both it just depends on the situation.
