Winter Stars Above Säntis ・ Shutter Expeditions 🇨🇭

Once per month, the team at Säntis Mountain organizes the Star Night - a unique opportunity to get on the top of the mountain at night, have a delicious four-course meal, and enjoy the best star show far away.
We used this opportunity to get to the top, skipped the dinner part, recorded several night timelapses, and took many star-filled photos instead.

Děkuji moc, Petře ✨😀 Tentokrát nefoukal vichr z hor a tak se to v těch mínus šesti stupních dalo s termoskou horkého čaje zvládnout velmi dobře 🥶🫖 Budeš se smát, ale skoro dva roky jsem se tam snažil v noci dostat, ale vždy, když byla jasná předpověď, bylo už vyprodáno na ten večer. A tak jsme se minule v pátek poprvé zeptali, zda by nešlo jet nahoru jen tak bez nároku na večeři... A oni řekli, že samozřejmě ano 🤦🏻‍♂️ Dva roky 😀

Another great video. Now I i know what the moving lights are, that I have seen in other videos and puzzled over. I too would prefer hot tea and raspberry pie and to watch the stars than have a fancy dinner!

Thanks so much, Sylvia! ✨😀 I was waiting for this for almost two years... And always when the weather was clear (which you know like three days ahead reliably), the dinner star night even was always already sold out. Finally, thanks to my friend, I got the idea to ask if we can go up without a dinner - and they said YES :))) I should ask more often... We stayed in Alter Säntis in October (again - based on your great video tip 🥰) and it was wonderful, just too strong wind (up to 100 km/h), so filming timelapse outside was impossible. So definitively would like to return there again.... Overall, I would like to explore the Alpstein and Toggenburg area more this year.

In the timelapse photography it's commonly called holy grail - it's hard to get it right (as the light is changing a lot), but I would like to learn it 😀 ☀️ → ✨

Thanks, my friend! ✨ We finally learned how to do it - now to the next challenge from sunset to the starry sky... It's called holy grail in timelapse photography as it is quite difficult to get it right, but we'd like to learn it... 👍🏻

Thanks a lot, Urška ✨ It took me almost two years to get there... It was already sold out whenever the weather forecast was good (which, you know, like 3 days ahead). Finally, thanks to my friend, I've got to ask if it is possible to go there without the dinner, to go to the top with the cable car - and they said: yes! 😀 It was not so cold, around -5 or -6 degrees; fortunately, it was not windy that day. So, with winter clothes for skiing/snow fun and a thermos full of hot tea, we could be outside comfortably for three hours without any issues.

@@SlovenianGirlAbroad They were really surprised that we are willing to be on the top for 2 hours in the evening without dinner😂 Even when buying the ticket for the cable car, they were reminding us that everything else is closed and we will have to wait there before being able to return 😀 I will now try the same trick for other places, which offer the full moon dinners (Hoher Kasten, Chäserrugg...)

ISO is brightness, I think. Light allowed in...

The hard part on the night photography is to focus properly on the stars (commonly it's necessary to use manual focus and try to take few pictures before you get it right). As there is a minimum light, you need either wait a long time (many seconds) or increase the sensitivity of the sensor (ISO) which as you pointed correctly increase the brightness. If you will keep sensititivy low (ISO 100 like during the bright sunny day), it can take very long to expose the stars (up to several minutes for one picture). Which will unfortunately make the stars blurry as they are moving on the sky... So, the setting we used are quite commonly use: we have very light big lens (F2.8 opening), set the exposure time for 6 seconds and wait for 6 full seconds to expose one image... Then the camera needs to process the image, save it (that's why we wait another second) and then we can take another photo... So it's about patience and good tripod :)) Wish you a wonderful day, Kylie! ✨🙋🏻‍♂️
