Absolutely cracking video Austin...loved it. Always have looked forward to Your Harz Mountain videos. So many great clips...the one i liked very much was the Snowscene at 22:30....Hope You didn't freeze too much in the Blizzard scenes....Hope to see You and Pam at the end of April...You know where !! Best wishes....Steve.-:)

Many thanks Steve, the Harz is a magical place for the steam enthusiast and just keeps on drawing us back. Surprisingly it wasn't too cold during those blizzards but we were well wrapped up anyway. Hopefully short sleeves will be in order at the end of April though!

I always love and look forward to your visits to The Hartz system Austin and this one certainly doesn't disappoint! The drivers don't spare their 99/7 locos and you captured a fair number of them this time around. It was interesting to see the railcar and I just loved the little vintage Mallets going at it still albeit with a lighter load and the double header was a delightful treat to the eyes of a confirmed steam man! The p-way looked in excellent condition on this very well run system. Noticed you had company at 5.20 and the snow was in substantially less quantity this year, except at the very highest levels. You must have had a great time shooting this video and your enthusiasm transfers very well to the video. An excellent job Austin, well done! Ken

Thanks Ken, it was a good week and one we had been looking forward to since the last visit. The best of the snow was in January and early February when they had plenty of sunshine too! That was Mrs ACW lurking in the bushes at 5:20 getting her still photo on the curve

Hello Austin, first of all: WOW! Did they prepare special program to you and how they knew what you like? - Did the standard gauge freight car at narrow gauge trolleys had real freight to Brocken station? (11:05) + (15:37) - The two working hard Mallets haul a train to Brocken. (17:45) - Lots of steam esp. (26:00) at strange light and more than impressing increasing steam storm at (14:00). Again and again this strange magical light. Seems winter storm Thomas didn't affected you seriosly except permanent changing wheather. Again another great Brockenbahn video by you. Heinz
@acw710008 жыл бұрын
Thanks Heinz, the train with the rollwagen was one of three special workings and ran to Nordhausen. The trains, of which we only saw this one, were jointly operated by a British company, Railtrail Holidays and www.ig-hsb.de/. The scene at 14.00 we had to take from inside the car as the rain was very heavy. My wife has a wonderful photograph at the same spot as she zoomed in close to the loco. The double headed Mallets were on a Sonderfahrt to the Brocken operated by HSB

Doesn't that Mallet make a wonderful sound. I like that little railcar too. Lovely conditions around 22:20.
@acw710008 жыл бұрын
Thanks, I do love the Mallets and that wonderful sound they make can be heard through the woods for a long time. The shot you mention at 22.20 was the same train seen leaving Drei Annen Hohne in a blizzard just 5 km. away. The sun appeared just as we drove into the station!

Looks like you and Pam had another wonderful trip Austin. I can feel the cold from here though. I can't seem to remember a double header in previous videos and you don't often seem them lose their feet either. Good to see that some were well filled. Many thanks for sharing. Chris
@acw710008 жыл бұрын
Thanks Chris, it was a good week. You tend to find the first two trains out are relatively sparsely filled at this time of year but the later ones are much busier, once folks have enjoyed a hearty breakfast. All do well at the weekend when people ride to the Brocken and walk back down the various paths

Hi Adrian. I was riding the HSB on the days you were filming, including the double headed Mallets. You have given me a fabulous record of that visit with your wonderful coverage. Thank you. Peter from Melbourne

Great video as always Austin. looking forward to my next visit to the Harz but haven't plucked up the courage to go in the depths of winter yet! The standard gauge transporter wagon was a real bonus; one railway where I haven't seen one in use yet.
@acw710008 жыл бұрын
Many thanks Peter, I can recommend a visit in winter especially if there is snow about. The transporter wagon was on one of three trains jointly run by Railtrail Holidays and a German enthusiast group,IG-HSB. This was the only one we managed to film as we didn't have any times for the trains

Belting video Austin , what stunning scenery that is perfect with snow . My favourites being 6-20 ( was that the shot you mentioned having to scamble to get at near the tunnel ) and the stunning shot at 12-36 but mind you the clag at 15-00 was superb .
@acw710008 жыл бұрын
Cheers Steve, that's correct the one at 6.20 was over the tunnel mouth, Pams little legs had a hell of a job scrambling back up! The one at 15.00 was from the car as it was chucking it down with rain, couldn't zoom in as it was handheld but Pam got a great zoomed in shot which was the one I uploaded to NP last week

Wonderful shots as always! Watching your footage captured between Steinerne Renne and Drei Annen I assume you done a walk on the path nearby the railway. I have done that a few years ago and it is really a good way to enjoy the landscape and the steam trains! Thanks for sharing and thumbs up!

Wonderful, Austin. What was the first station stop in the video? Only watched 5 mins. this time but I'll be back for more . . .
@acw710008 жыл бұрын
Thanks Alan, the first station was Steinerne Renne, about 6 Km. from Wernigerode. That was actually the last shot, taken on Sunday morning, followed by a high speed dash to Berlin as we discovered the hire car was due back an hour earlier than we had thought!
@balmesh8 жыл бұрын
Ah, that's why I didn't recognise it - never heard of it! Missed out on that one, obviously. Hope you got to Berlin in time?

Sorry the weather was challenging but thanks for your tenacity which resulted in thoroughly enjoyable watching. A great transition from wet to white, with some superb exhaust visual effects. How close was that to a stall? The evening scene in the closing sequences would make a wonderful painting. Yet another tour de force which has further whetted our appetite for a trip to the Harz once we fully retire - may well be asking you a number of detailed questions when the time comes. Thanks again, Austin - Bob K.
@acw710008 жыл бұрын
Thanks very much Bob, it was probably the worst weather we've had in the four visits we've made to the Harz so we can't complain really given the time of year. You will certainly enjoy a holiday there and you are more than welcome to ask questions when planning your visit

Very nice indeed, as always. Question though, do you need to ask permission in advance for access to the sheds? I'm looking into going and have asked them, but haven't had any reply.
@acw710008 жыл бұрын
Thanks very much Chris. I think that access to the sheds is not generally available unless perhaps to an organised group. I understand that in the past they were quite happy to allow access but have tightened up in recent years. All my shots were taken from the platform or the viewing area adjacent to the shed
@ChristheXelent8 жыл бұрын
Oh well. I suppose I'll have to keep asking them. Any advice on best locations to get as much action as possible in as little time as possible would be greatly appreciated. Would it be okay to talk privately?
