We joined Shaun Evans from Murphy Sportfishing for a day of winter steelhead fishing along the Stamp River on Vancouver Island. The cold weather brings many challenges including frozen fishing lines and tight lipped steelhead. Can these be overcome?

rod, I love how you put these videos together. your camerawork is beautiful, and your co-host kitty is a delight on screen. i really appreciate what you're doing, and I would be honored to fish with you two. One of my subs commented and said we should fish together. We're thinking about heading over to your area in the next month or so, and i think what you're doing is extraordinary and should definitely be documented. I think we could put together some awesome episodes, get some cool camera work, and tell some epic stories.

Hi Brendon and Erin, thanks for the kind words! ;) Sure give me a shout when you plan to come up. All I can say that Kitty and I don't live in the same town, our filming schedules are already fixed for the next several months, so she most likely won't be able to do anything. Let me know when and we'll see what we can do together, or at least give you some pointers on where you should go for this time of the year. :)

Fishing with Rod believe me, we know that feeling haha. We've been working on the channel every day for what feels like a year now haha. We just got back from upstate New York near the border where we went trout fishing and caught some nice rainbows. The trout here in Maryland are so small. The trout fishing in your video looks beautiful and very different. I really feel like I get a sense of what it's like to fish there through your video.

Hey everyone! I hope you are enjoying watching this episode. As you have noticed, we are now putting out videos on every Sunday and Thursday, or try to anyway. We've also been playing around with how to present how show to you in the most entertaining and educational way. Many thanks to my co-host Kitty for bringing her enthusiasm and creative ideas, which are in my opinion making these videos so much better. I'd like to hear your feedbacks after watching the show, and please share this with your friends. The best way to support our work is to keep sharing these videos, and we really appreciate it! :) Rod

Fishing with Rod honestly your videos just keep getting better and better everytime. also i love how you guys are putting out more videos than before. One suggestion i would have as a viewer is if you guys could do some more educational videos like the ocean trolling videos but instead for shore fishing rivers and lakes. I dont have an ocean boat so although its good to learn about ocean fishing i cant put it in to practise. Thats my suggestion but keep up the good work!

Thanks Justin, there are a few episodes featuring ocean fishing already scheduled for this year. Some will be tutorials. We try to diversify the content and make sure both salt and freshwater are covered evenly. :)

What is probably my favourite thing about steelhead fishing is how beautiful the places are that you go to catch them. This summer I fished a river and we almost left because there was a bear not 70 feet downstream but it saw us and left. I have never caught one as big as the ones in this video, but I will definitely keep trying. You actually inspired me to get out and try for steelhead. Thanks!

Kitty says, “Fish on! Wow it’s really pulling. It’s a giant! This could be the largest steelhead ever caught in the history of fishing. Hey would someone reel this in for me while I eat more chicken soup?” Ha, only kidding!!! You two are fantastic! I have learned so much about cold water fishing from you both. Thanks!

Hey rod at like 1:35 kitty is throwing a hook onto what looks like a Gibbs koho.. is that a small leader she put on there???
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod 6 жыл бұрын
Instead of using a split ring and a long shank siwash hook, she's tying on a trailer hook with braided line. The idea is to use a smaller hook but still have it extended like a long shank hook. The smaller hook can result in better catch and release survival as hooks with a bigger gap can do more damages.

Great shots and editing, looking very professional. I like when you do follow-ups, like you did after the ice fishing. I'd love to hear any ideas on how to counter lines and guides freezing up and getting the most out of the equipment on a cold day like this. Cheers!

Could you take a minute next time to give more in depth details about the rod/reels/hardware/knots used and why you chose to use them on future videos? Thanks for the Awesome video!
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod 7 жыл бұрын
Normally we do a bit of that, but on this day it was just too cold and we were literally frozen lol... Quite often we do a follow-up video on the setup. In fact there is a tutorial of Kitty showing how she likes to set her spinning rod and reel up for this fishery, coming out in a week from now. For the rods and reels, we use Shimano Clarus 9' or 9'6" spinning rods, Shimano Sustain and Stradic CI4+ 2500s. The lures we used were Gibbs Koho spoons, size #35.

bugpumper This is not a typical guided trip of course lol... I made sure Shaun was fishing the whole time because I want that in the video. One person is always behind the camera (either me or Kitty) and two are always fishing in front.
