Fishing with Rod

8 жыл бұрын

Stamp River on Vancouver Island offers steelhead fishing year round. In October and November, summer steelhead emerge and feed on eggs being deposited by spawning chinook salmon. In this video feature, Kitty Kanhoffen targets these steelhead by a trout bead under a float, with guide Shaun Evans from Murphy Sportfishing in Port Alberni BC.

not to be a gear head nerd but this guiding outfit provides some great gear. I've watched a few vids and all kinds of rod/reel combo's have come out, better casting reels than average fishermen buy for themselves.. after watching her fish, I would say she needs a left hand reel which would probably end up with fewer lost fish. great videos. I like how well they're edited and the format is tv show style with a beginning, middle and end.

awesome fishing video. You can probably use Jensen single eggs as they are softer and more natural than beads.
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod 8 жыл бұрын
+stevejet64 Yep, Jesen eggs work too if they are unscented since there is a bait ban in the stretch where we were fishing. One advantage with the trout beads is that they come in different colours and sizes, and the size differences are down to a millimetre, which allows you to really match the size of the eggs in the river.

New to Steelhead/Beads, what mm beads were you using here? Thanks!
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod 6 жыл бұрын
I don't remember exactly, but I think 5mm and 7mm were the ones being used here. Basically we are matching the size of the beads to the eggs being deposited by which salmon species are spawning. In this case, majority of the eggs found are chinook salmon eggs which are typically bigger.

A trick when fishing with beads is to sweep down stream and across on the hook set. Often times the bead is in but the hook isn't.
@flyman451
@flyman451 5 жыл бұрын
Good point but also it is important to not have the bead pegged so tightly that when the steelhead eats the bead the tippet doesn't slide through the bead allowing the hook to move upward. I use those tapered silicone pegs and just pull them through to keep the bead about 3" above the hook but not so tight that the bead doesn't move. Obviously different diameters of tippet with require adjusting how tightly you secure the bead with the peg.

i was out at Kamloops lake today and the guy beside me pulled out a 7 pound rainbow! I was drop shotting and only got a northern pikeminnow and a pea mouth chub, but near sunset I rigged up my salmon rod with a glow in the dark jighead and two large roe bags. What i hooked I think was a burbot, but may have been something else. How it fought was weird; it was sort of pulling and rolling at the same time, and it doubled my rod over. i got it about 20 feet from shore when I lost it. I think you should make a video fishing off shore on Kamloops Lake. I was at Cooney Bay.

Rodney, I'm curious how Kitty distinguishes a "rainbow" from a "steelhead" in that river. They appeared to be very similar in size. If it's a young steelhead that hasn't even entered the ocean once it its life, it would be exactly the same as a rainbow? Or are they slightly different strains? I noticed huge and medium sized wild & hatchery rainbows in the Vedder & Chilliwack lake that have really long portruded fish faces & mouths, when compared to the stocked rainbows & wild cutthroat from around the lower mainland.. Would a steelhead live in a river & lake for a while, and then live in the ocean for a while, or do steelhead come up only to spawn and feed on salmon eggs and then retreat immediately? Can a steelhead decide to spend 1.5 years in a lake for some reason? Oh, the combinations.. It's driving me crazy!
@LachlanThistlethwaite
@LachlanThistlethwaite 8 жыл бұрын
+BC Fishing They seem similar, but I think it's the strain that distinguishes them. I have never had to tell the difference though, since I've never caught a rainbow large enough on a river to need to tell the difference.
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod 8 жыл бұрын
+BC Fishing Essentially steelhead and rainbow trout are the same species, that's why they share the same scientific name, Oncorhynchus mykiss. The key difference is the anadromous part of the steelhead lifecycle, whereas rainbow trout reside in rivers throughout their lives. In coastal rivers like the Stamp, both can be found and the key differences are the size and colourations. Rainbow trout are obviously much smaller as the amount of food available for them in a river is significantly lower than what's available for steelhead to eat in the ocean. Steelhead undergo smoltification when they head into the ocean as juveniles, which results in the metallic body colouration which you see as they return as adults. Resident rainbow trout tend to be spottier and more colourful. With that said, steelhead which have been in a river for some time can regain most of those characteristics. The two populations can interbreed, and offsprings can either become anadromous steelhead or resident rainbow trout. They can indeed "decide" to stay in the river or lake instead of smoltify and head to the ocean if condition does not favour that process. Either life cycles are strategies to keep them alive, so whichever works better at the time will be more preferred, that's why the ratio of steelhead and rainbow trout can change from year to year. If you are talking about the little silver fish caught and slipped out of the hand when she talks about "possibly losing a steelhead" in the video, that fish was in fact a coho jack. I was just showing what were caught during that period, perhaps should have overlaid that part a bit earlier when she says "chinook and coho", we never saw the first steelhead she hooked. I hope that helps! :)
@bcfishing1876
@bcfishing1876 8 жыл бұрын
***** Thanks Rodney for the in depth explanation. Much appreciated. A topic to think about: have you heard of landlocked chum & chinook & coho salmon? How would releasing chinook salmon into the depths of the Okanagan work out for the well being of the released fish as well as them competing with other salmonoids and coarse fish? Would they have enough to eat? Would they adopt other food sources?
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod 8 жыл бұрын
+BC Fishing Yep, landlocked coho, chinook salmon do occur if conditions favour it. In the Lower Mainland, landlocked coho salmon are found in the Seymour River, Cultus Lake, Kawkawa Lake, and I'm sure quite a few other watersheds all have them but just not known as no one targets them. Landlocked sockeye salmon/kokanee are already well known as they are widely targeted as a gamefish, so the same can easily take place for other species. One good/bad example of the introduction of landlocked chinook, coho salmon is the Great Lakes in Ontario. Done to create new sport fishing opportunities, they have actually displaced native species in the lake such as lake trout. How it would affect the Okanagan Lake ecosystem, I really don't know as I am not familiar with the system.

Nice fish & beautiful river ! Few tips may help your landing : 1.If you setup the drag of ur baitcasting reel properly before you cast.You don't put ur thumb above the spool (holding ur line) always. 2.Try to use ur right hand to hold upper cork of ur handle. It's much easier to band ur rod then easier to handle ur fish that way. 3.Try to use ur left-hand elbow against lower part of lower cork of the handle. 4. First moment when you get fish bite, hold ur rod vertically high (just like fishing guide said).There are so many things we always keep learning in fishing. Hope these tips will help.If you don't really understand my tips - then ask the cameraman. He's a good fisherman. Anyway, beautiful river beautiful steelhead and nice jobs done.

The guide people should use the rubber net at least and keep the caught fish not over the shallow water underneath stones, but in deeper water to keep the fish in better condition, when the fishes are for catch and release
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod 8 жыл бұрын
+Bazlur Rahman Rest assured that these fish are handled safely. The net mesh being used is a new vinyl material which has been developed by Gibbs-Delta Tackle. The coating is similar to rubber but more flexible, and designed for the purpose of catching and releasing. You should stop by their booth at the Abbotsford trade show later this winter to check them out.

How can you tell if they are male or female?
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod 6 жыл бұрын
guitardavepdx Depending on the stage of these fish in the river, there are several physical differences between males and females. Males tend to have a longer head/jaw, while females often have a wider girth due to eggs. These aren’t exact of course, every fish can be slightly different. The more you catch, easier you’ll find it to differentiate the two.

+FlamsON Flams It depends on what fisheries we are participating in, and have no problem retaining fish for eating if the regulations allow. In this particular fishery, it is mainly catch and release unless the fish is a hatchery marked fish. Even so, we were unlikely to keep any as we have already been harvesting enough fish from the salmon season a few weeks prior to that.

I have lost my thrill at 6:50 because of so many fish I can see in the water. Half water, half fish.

+rosepark222 The fish you are seeing in the water, are chinook salmon which are spawning. Those are not what we were targeting.

rosepark222 those are spawning salmon lol clearly someone’s never fished on the coast..... steelhead are ghosts, for us fly guys , it’ll sometimes take years to get your first steelhead. If I catch one a month I’m more than happy. I actually caught my first steelhead on this river right above the falls.

Thanks for the invite Renato, I do really appreciate it. The only problem is our trip/filming schedule is pretty much set for the year and I don't really have time to come out on trips like this unfortunately. :)

+Trouta Holic We should have shown a picture of it. It's like a pale pink colour, but white cream should be pretty close to it too.
