Winter Survival- No Gear

Can I survive? ...with just my clothes, a belt knife, and what I ordinarily carry in my pockets? I'll take advantage of resources; try to get a fire going; build a shelter; and make it through the cold, winter night. The day felt really warm- the temperature reached a high of 44 °F, with bright sun, few clouds, and almost no wind. Late in the afternoon, the temperature started to drop, and the wind picked up. It got down to 16°F with high gusts of wind. Here we see- It's important when heading into the woods to carefully consider what clothes and gear you bring with you. Even if it seems warm and nice when you start the hike, the weather can change quickly. An unprepared person may never return.

I'm not sure why I haven't seen you on here before. Great video. Had I done that shelter I would have gone a bit heavy on the bed and closed up the ends to block the wind and hold in the heat. I admire that you didn't take any back up gear. I still do just in case. Thanks for the upload

Thank you so much. I bring a pack with more gear. I didn't for this video because it was a demonstration of the importance of EDC gear (in case you lose the pack somehow.) I basically ran out of time with the shelter. Yes I would have closed off the ends. But with no axe and no saw, I had to forage for dead limbs and trees I could break by hand. As the supply close to the site was exhausted, I had to walk further and further to find more. I could have built more of a bed. If it was a real emergency, I could have harvested live evergreen branches. But depending on the area and situation, I might not want to do that.

I really like how you built your fire against the rock. Many videos show people sitting with their back to a rock and setting up their fire in front of them with most of the heat just escaping into the surrounding air. It has always seemed a waste of radiant heat to me. I can understand the natural inclination to have your back against something solid though. Also loved the fact you just used what resources you could find without an ax or saw. So many people who require actual EMERGENCY shelter in the wilderness are hikers that get lost. They aren’t carrying an ax to chop perfect firewood.

I saw a video recently where the guy didn't want to build a fire against the rock because of pollution/Nature/... That wouldn't trouble me one bit. I'm just leaving traces of ancient cave man for future anthropologists to puzzle over! Heh. Against the rock, you have a great heat reflector and radiator that'll put off some heat for quite a while. A trick from Outdoor Boys channel is to build the fire where you plan to sleep and move it before bed. Regardless, even without that and without closing up the ends, as long as there's a fire in there and for a bit after, that's a pretty cozy shelter. But seriously, there are too many of us monkeys for all of us to get our wilderness on without regard. A little soot on a rock is nothing, but if everybody's gotta make a big, bouncy bed of spruce boughs, that's not good. Strip Nature bare for a gen-you-wine bushcraft experience? Nah.

The Tenth commandment is in danger of being broken here - 'You will not envy..'. Seeing this, the climate, the surroundings, all of it - I just can't help it. And to top it all - a Scripture reading at the end - to bring it all into perspective. Watching from the UK..

My wife's father is German/Scot mix. My DNA tests say significant amounts of German, but I don't know where it's from. I'm descended from very early colonists and Abenaki, so paper records are fragmentary. As far as the fire making- I made an ember on charred punk wood using a fresnel lens. Then my tinder (to get a flame) is dry punk wood. In this video, you can see me collecting that dry punk wood from nature from two different trees. God bless you.

Good skills, but the all night fire gives me pause. What kind of sleep do you get when you have to stoke the fire all night? How many days could you keep going like that? Wouldn’t it be better to heat a medium (e.g., stones, water, dirt)? What if there’s heavy rain? Could you survive in your EDC without fire? That would seem to be the most practical destination for training and gear selection. I’m not criticizing. Asking myself these questions. This video is infinitely better than watching some fool carry 50 pounds of gear 2 miles to set-up a shelter, fry a steak in a frying pan, and walk back to his car the next morning exhausted and cold.
@DougShoeBushcraft
@DougShoeBushcraft 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for the detailed comment and questions. In my videos I try to demonstrate different skills, one or a few at a time, in a methodical manner. The topic of this video was- What happens if I become separated from my backpack in cold weather? Can I survive with just the gear that I routinely carry on my person? The purpose was to get the viewer thinking, so he or she could be prepared in such a situation. The medium I heated up was the boulder and the few rocks I could find in the time I had. Rocks can be hard to find when there is snow cover. I had hiked far into the woods that day (simulating a hiker or hunter who gets into trouble). Night falls early in the winter in the north. That means limited time to find materials, make the shelter, gather firewood, start a fire, etc. What you see in the video is what I had time to do, basically. I suppose I could have rushed or worked harder. But then you add the possibility of injury. I can start a fire in the rain. I've demonstrated that skill on the channel. But there could be times I couldn't make fire. If there was a bad blizzard (for example) and I was very sick or injured, then maybe I couldn't get a fire going. Or if I'm alive 30 years from now, maybe I wouldn't have the physical ability in my advanced age. Some people don't have the skills. Without fire, one technique is doing squats or running in place. If you can't do that, then a technique is tensing up all your muscles (essentially) and relaxing then repeating. But this burns calories. Your body only has so much fat and energy reserve. Without the right shelter, insulation and/or fire- People can die the first night. I'm not recommending that anyone do what I did. Don't do it. You can die. In my own case, I believe I have the skills to keep myself safe. As an adult, I was responsible for my own safety.

You hit the nail on the head. I ran out of time and materials. I had to walk further and further to find the things I needed. There was lots more dead wood close by. However, it was too large in diameter and too structurally sound for me to break by hand. Life would have been much easier with an axe and/or a saw. But I was demonstrating spending the night in the woods having lost all that. I did get some sleep, but it wasn't my best night's sleep. A sleeping bag or a wool blanket would have been nice.

I got some good sleep. It's been a while now, so I don't remember a lot of the details. It wasn't as cozy as having a sleeping bag or wool blanket.

Why did you take it apart? Once the smell of fire and you fade away wildlife could take shelter there.

I can't always leave a shelter up. For example, it can be against the rules at town, state, or national park. Thanks for thinking about the animals. That's nice. In that area there were small caves and sheltered areas under fallen trees.

Would you be able to do an extreme survival in a location with blowing snow, no trees in sight, just plain snow all over the horizon? Or tips on how to survive in such a condition. Thanks!
@DougShoeBushcraft
@DougShoeBushcraft 3 жыл бұрын
New Hampshire has trees and brush covering essentially all of the wild areas that aren't lakes or ponds. The exception would be really steep or rocky areas, or on mountains above the tree line. But that has challenges. I was planning a demonstration of surviving with just snow for a shelter. But weather has quickly and unexpectedly turned warm now. Thank you so much for the request. I will have a demonstration like that, but don't know when it will be made.

Looks like you had kit items to me what am I missing. Why do you guys tear down your structures if I get cought out in a storm it's easier if I find a partially built shelter than expending 100 % to build one up from scratch and either way that material will eventually deteriorate no matter if it's on a shelter or on the ground.

I defined it as no gear beyond what I typically have in my pockets. I was demonstrating what a person can do with EDC. As far as taking down structures, it depends where I am- my own land, a friend's private property, or state or national forest or park. Yes, I used all natural materials I found on site. So if I had left it standing, it would have just rotted over time and turned completely into dirt.

Have to wonder or ponder on how often that boulder was possibly used by Native Americans for shelter over the past 1000+ years.

how long ago did you find that boulder and decide it would be a great spot for a video like this ?
@DougShoeBushcraft
@DougShoeBushcraft 3 жыл бұрын
that was my first time in the area. I scouted around for a good spot- close to the brook, but not an area that could flood. I wanted a place to get out of the wind. -where the snow wasn't too deep to clear to bare ground. -and enough materials close by to build a shelter and have firewood.

Why not just leave the structure as is. It could be useful to animals or other people seeking shelter. It’s just as much a work of nature as anything else.
