I'm in the Army and we had hilleberg 4 and 8 man's in Estonia as part of a cold weather operators course with the royal marines. It got down to about -28C so freezing our balls off. The biggest problem is the lack of ventilation because they need to keep the heat it in. It's a trade off and I'd rather the warm with frozen walls to wake up to than the vents. Especially in those conditions. Corse as ace too the RM lads really know their stuff.

Yea when that wind’s gusting even earplugs struggle to block it out …. A thing I’ve noticed about English folk (and this goes for my family too) is that you all drink caffeinated drinks (tea or coffee ) just before going to bed. That can’t help a relaxed nights sleep 😴 can it!?!! Might wanna try a decaffeinated drink with a hint tipple of ‘camp juice’ just to take the edge off 🥱🥱😴….. great video as always Paul … thank you for sharing your adventure 👍👍

@@seankirk333 …. Russian Campjuice = vodka , Mexican Campjuice = Tequila , Scottish Campjuice = Whiskey etc …. it’s a phrase coined by my friends at Kuehl Kuest. It comes in useful when you backpack to a campsite in the US that doesn’t allow alcohol (and there’s a lot of them for sure)…. a little nip of camp juice before bed and i usually sleep pretty decent 👍👍😄

Great video Paul, it’d be great if you could do a comparison video between the Soulo and Scarp 1. I’ve got the soulo but thinking about getting rid for the Scarp, just concerned about the pack size.
@anangrysalad82562 жыл бұрын
BD - I'm in the market for a new tent and was looking at soulo vs scarp1, my current tent is a bit more bulky than I'd like. Does the scarp1 pack bigger hence your question?
@JDB2692 жыл бұрын
@@anangrysalad8256 it has the short poles at each end, so in theory can only be ‘squashed’ down to a certain point depending on the poles. In Paul’s first video in the scarp he briefly mentions it at the end, where as the soulo is heavier and smaller but when packed the shape can be manipulated

I looked at the Soulo but opted for the Unna instead with a footprint. No vestible but huge inside and i unclip the inner and roll it back which cuts down on the condensation. You can also roll the front and back of the tent up to aid airflow. Will be getting the anaris for spring / summer when they eventually come back in stock. 👍

First off mate can I just say how well you are looking and also dare I say it, looking trimmer. Secondly I camped last weekend in the Hilleberg Soulo in cold conditions with vents open and I was amazed at how quick and how much condensation there was. Always heard about them being notorious but that was my first encounter.

For all the glowing reviews that Hilleberg tents get, hardly any of them draw attention to the fact they are actually quite bad for condensation issues. I had the Akto which also ended up dripping in condensation on many a camp, which is why I ditched it and got a 4 season Sigma Lightwave S15, with a anti condensation treatment within the inner material and noticed a huge difference. Didn't eliminate the problem entirely, I doubt that's possible, but it was a night & day difference, compared to my old Akto.

Nice hilltop adventure. As soon as you said the tent was over the top on the way up I knew you'd be getting strong winds, always seems to happen. Could do with finding a nice tent material that doesn't make that flap/bang sound when it gets blown around, I'll add it to the list alongside featherlight, unrippable, fully breathable, thermal insulating and anti-condensation 😂 Congrats to the winner of the stove. Won't spoil it in the comments section, but I hope they (and their child/partner if they have one) enjoys getting loads of use out of it 😉

its all about ventilation. when i boil my water in the tent vestibule, i unzip the door but leave the velcro attached at some points. this allows all of that steam to escape outside rather than rise up inside of my tent. i am using the lanshan 2 pro 3 season tent and cooking using the msr windburner. temperatures were about -10C with wind raising to -18C, tent rear door and sides were blocked with snow by building ridges. front door covered on one side, main side left slightly uncovered for air flow.

Great video again Paul. My Soulo flaps alot too but I see it as the price you pay for a bombproof tent. You can't have everything (there is no such thing as a perfect tent in my book) and I'd rather put some earplugs in and watch the inner flap (all adds to the drama!) knowing the tent isn't going anywhere than be in a tent that doesn't flap and worry I was about to fly off the side of a mountain!
