i still wear and see so many others wearing skinny jeans... so out of touch for people to think things go "out" of style when its just a subset of people who subscribe to fashion trends and let their taste be shaped by others

I think a lot of people see different old trends how they were when they were popular (myself included) like the skinny jeans I wore as a teenager were horrific quality vs getting like a good quality version is going to feel different and in turn give you a different opinion on them. I think I was coming across in a way where fashion website will deem a trend as “horrifically outdated and nobody should ever wear” and then will come back being like “JK actually it’s THE trend whatever we told you to buy throw THAT OUT”

Slim/skinny pants with tucked into combat boots of any lenght is my go to since I was a young teen. I'm short and I have wide hips, so tbh most other pant silhouttes look stupid on me. Following trends is just pointless these days, imagine getting a new wardrobe every month

it’s wild how the 2020s seem to be the first decade in centuries that doesn’t have a distinct homogeneous “style”. like if you think of any other decade prior to this one, you can envision the general styles that most people were wearing. i can’t think of anything for the 2020s besides that strawberry cardigan that was popular in 2020

Since I’m a former editor in chief for a big fashion magazine, I want people to know that trends reports are mostly marketing & PR for certain brands that want to sell certain products. Other than that, in fashion personal style is always admired because nothing say uninspiring & uncreative more than being dressed like everyone else.

Trend articles are so tacky to me. I feel like there’s a difference between reporting on what’s going on with fashion vs. churning out mindless lists of whats in or out with the purpose of influencing people what to wear, hardly ever mentioning things like incorporating it into your personal style or how it works for diff body types. And it’s becoming so fast that we can remember certain items coming in and out of style multiple times
@annastebelskyj580
@annastebelskyj580 Ай бұрын
The whole purpose of these trend lists is to justify what the trend forecasters had decided on last year or even earlier. It's not a conspiracy theory; there is an actual group of people who basically dictate what the fashion industry will do for the next 12-36 months. All the big manufacturers buy the forecasts so they can plan their collections, whether they do 2 or 12 in a year. Very little of what's trendy is genuinely zeitgeist-driven. In recent times, I can only think of a handful of trends that were developed through the natural interest of the general public in the designs of small-scale, independent designers. The Matoshi strawberry dress created a massive cascade of strawberry-themed fast fashion, Selkie was absolutely essential to the development of the cottage core aesthetic, and basically anything darkly architectural is courtesy of Japanese design houses who DGAF about the stupid trend forecasts.

An alternative for people who struggle with wool and other animal fiber sweaters: Cotton sweaters! You can find them in the thrift stores really easily bc lots of people overlook them in favor of wool/cashmere options but they're just as nice AND not as itchy AND don't shed microplastics in the wash! Idk if they're a trend but does it really matter?

And there are cotton chenille yarns too, so you can get the soft fuzzy texture without getting the polyester sweats
@feather8894
@feather8894 Ай бұрын
the material matters quite a lot depening on where you live. cotton is a great material for summer/the warmer climate, because it absorbs your sweat and keeps you cool during the heat. in winter, however, damp clothes will make you feel cold. I guess you're gonna be fine if you live in a warmer climate, but here in germany, cotton is really not the material to wear during the winter. especially if you need to ride your bike to school/uni/work like I (and most germans) do. same goes for overheated rooms - you're going to sweat inside and freeze outside. (it pains me to say that, but polyester or polyacryl or whatever is actually better during the winter season, because artificial materials wont absorb your sweat. but merino wool is absolutely the material of choice if one can afford it.) writing this comment made me realize how much of a material nerd I became once researching how to stay warm based on the experience of outdoor enthusiasts. if you live in a cold climate, ditch all the fashion advice and listen to survival experts instead. and then combine your new knowledge with your fashion preferences and boom, best of both worlds.
@vogtdig
@vogtdig Ай бұрын
@@feather8894 The first ascent of Mt. Everest was before the invention of polyester; fashion historians will tell you that prior to the invention of synthetic outdoor wear, climbers used cotton and silk base layers and layered wool and down on top. Natural fibers are better insulators and allow for moisture wicking-because they aren't plastic based, they allow for sweat to leave your body and evaporate through the clothing. Polyester, on the other hand, traps heat and sweat, forcing you to walk around in damp garments, which in extreme cold temperatures, can lead to frostbite.

YES!! I have been (slowly) replacing my sweaters with cotton ones that I find - they’re SO comfortable!!
@andreao8535
@andreao8535 Ай бұрын
@@feather8894strongly disagree. I live in Germany and wear exclusively cotton sweaters and I am never cold. I can't stand neither wool (allergies), nor polyester (sweating). Polyamid is fine, as long as it's in a blend with cotton, otherwise I sweat a lot underneath which is not my vibe - I want to be warm, not soaking wet lol. When I'm wearing cotton, I am NEVER cold, although I walk most of the time (don't drive in a car or public transport), to and from work, to buy groceries or wherever I have to go. Meanwhile I also suffer from a chronic disease where I don't do well in colder climate and I pretty much always have cold hands and feet, even in summer when it's boiling hot. So, no, it has nothing to do with a climate you live in. It has to do a lot with breathability of the material and, of course, a personal preference.

The really dark jeans don't "look like" denim because our usual denim is yarn dyed and you get the visual interest of all the different threads. With the dark wash it's cloth dyed and it's less dimensional, more flat!

Advice I've gathered from my dad's side of the family, who live in a country where fur is more commonly used: don't buy multiple different ones depending on what's in style. Invest in ones in colors that match the majority of your wardrobe, avoid getting them wet, and you're good. Anything out of style will come back into style quickly, and if the number of women in the US who compliment my Aunt Shahnoda on her coat is any indication, having something you know how to style and feel confident is is WAY more important than being on-trend. She has worn things that are incredibly off-trend and looked good.

As a knitter I find chenille horrible to work with, it makes my hands all sweaty and easily looks worn before whatever is made with it is finished. Apart from that, I never realised it was on trend for garments, I mostly know it from blankets and chunky chenille crocheted bees. I must admit I wouldn't buy a chenille garment in the store either😅 If people like the look, that is great! I just sat here thinking 'huh, it's out now, wait does that mean it was in before?'

They were kind of hard to find because they weren't a trend, now that everyone is saying they are in, and skinny jeans are out I am wanting to wear skinny jeans LOL> I hate being told what to do ha ha! PS, everywhere I look ppl are in skinny jeans or bootcut in my area of the Midwest. I like the newer style skinny jeans that are almost more of what used to be thought of as straight leg when older skinny jeans were actually jeggings and super tight, I don't like those. Now, straight jeans are wider than an older straight jean and a slim straight is what straight used to be. I think ppl need to wear what looks and feels good for their body shape and lifestyle.

🌞Always love your Trend Takes. Each season I see it as a strategy to shop🛍 my own closet in order to refresh my look for the next quarter. Plus, it makes me happy to see how the pendulum swings〰️& shows how I'll actually be "On Trend" w/what I already own too. 😉Think your approach to it builds confidence in yourself & others. As you prescribe, it's an excellent tactic to learn to take these potential style roasts in stride. Overall, it's far smarter to stick w/what best suits you〰️our figure, temperament, taste, climate, lifestyle (level of formality), etc. 😬Don't do jeans👖, but the darker washes do read as more elegant & Fall/Winter. Light wash denim feels 💯% a more casual chic & also Spring/Summer. When you live in 😎Sunny SoCal, light blue denim is practically a neutral in our setting. 🤗Chenille is soft & cozy as well as afforadable for LA's more mild Winter weather. Splashing out in high quality knitwear can be 💸pricey. Lovely as they can be, I simply don't get max cost per wear out of cashmere or wool. 😃The all gray look was rather ✨️spectacular. Feel far more comfy w/mini skirts in chilly Fall/Winter when paired w/coordinating tights & thigh-high boots. Like the added modesty coverage & warmth that those two things add. Tend to avoid pleats in short or long skirts bcos they can add extra bulk ↔️ for an already extreme hourglass⏳️ figure😂. 🙂Straight trousers & sometimes slightly slouchy wide leg pants are most flattering for my curvy form. Although I do own beautiful black lined wool 🚬cigarette pants I wear occasionally in 🥶cold weather. Tapered pants emphasize the exaggerated width (or V shape) of my hips & lower extremities🤣. Unless tucking leggings or jeggings in riding boots🐎〰️ skinnies are O-U-T for me. ❤Love to be swaddled in a soft, cosy oversized scarf in chilly temps. 😊It can make you feel toasty in much lighter layers too. 🥵Once it heats up, I prefer smaller scarves to tie around neck, wrist, or a tote bag. The long, slim scarves can easily work as a sash to add a 💥pop💥 of color or pattern too. 💚Bridget from Cali☘️ (using my pal's YT acct)

alexa! But a good variety since I wear them almost everyday to work when I am not wear a sweater. My favorite fall/wibter combo is a blazer with a turtleneck.

I love chenille but I'm a little allergic to wool, it makes me itch. I also really like the way chenille looks. It originated in France in the 1780's so it's been around a long time too.

I always wear flares/bell bottoms. Sometimes I am in style but often I am not. Right now they are fashionable again so I am looking forward to finding them in the thrift shops soon.

To start, I wear what I like and pay no attention to fast fashion. I am definitely a jeans Woman and I like different shades but I do agree most of mind are light wash. I like messy cuffed on strait legged jeans but I also hate cuffed on wide legged. I will NEVER EVER EVER put another pair of skinny jeans on my body regardless if I am the only person on earth wearing straight or wde legged jeans. I was so happy when that style went away. It was freedom for my legs.😊

I am so done with skinny jeans. Not that i haven't kept mine (although i am not wearing them), but they have been popular for sooooo many years and i wanted them gone for such a long time already. So i wish that skinny jeans will not get in style for at least 10 more years from now, so that not everyone is going to wear them again. I feel like at this point of time you see much more different styles on the streets and i love that. I don't mind people wearing skinny jeans, but i like to see all the variety that we have now on the streets.

Clear umbrella IS life changing!! I got mine back in the early '10s when I feel like no one was selling them, at a gift shop that sold a lot of Asian staples. I still have it and use it all the time, even tho it's not the best quality it's not like the Shein shit we have now. I say yes, buy a clear umbrella new and quality, bc you'll never need another one, which is better sustainability anyway.

I live in a small town in north Louisiana. Most of the women here wear t shirts, jeans and hoodies. And everyone wears camo. Especially now since it’s hunting season. I don’t hunt and I despise camo. So I can wear non-trendy, thrift store clothes and still be fashionable. 😂

This is so funny to me because I feel like every fall we talk about the latest trends without realizing its the same stuff each year. The colors maroon, olive green, brown, etc. The cheetah print, The weather and the chunky sweaters. Y'all!! THESE ARE JUST WINTER CLOTHES!!! NOT TRENDS!!

Can’t we all just accept that light wash denim looks better on some people and dark wash denim looks better on others? I’m happy for me (team dark wash) but I feel bad for everyone who is being told that they don’t have style for wearing the currently less trendy, lighter wash denim, when I would argue that wearing what looks good on you regardless of the trend cycle points to a strong sense of style.

I love skinny scarves! I’ve just been getting into them lately too. I used to wear one all the time in 2012 and I cringe at all my outfits back then, so it took me forever to come back to it. Now I love it. I feel so amazing whenever I wear one. Also I just don’t live in an place where house scarves will ever be needed. 😅

😊Was totally OBSESSED w/leather jackets in the 80s & 90s. Although many were cropped, they were also quite heavyweight. There were 👽futuristic fashion & even fringed🤠 fashion that was quite popular. Pop star ⭐️Michael Jackson was a huge style influence over those eras. 😬My moto jackets have long since found better homes. Now, I find leather a bit too hot🥵 for me in the desert like climate of the SF Valley. Of them all, I kept my dad's lightweight oversized black leather bomber jacket & a beautiful dark gray suede midi trench that was handed down by a friend's mother🖤. 😉Frankly, I'm capped out for regular blazers & even Winter coats. Just don't get maximum use for them here anymore😂. 🎉Enjoy your leather passion! 💚Bridget from Cali☘️ (using my pal's YT acct)
