As a former U.S. Navy sailor I have some definite opinions on P-Coats. It's is a very warm piece of gear. UNLESS,... It's windy. After graduating boot camp one very chilly January day in Great Mistakes Illinois, yours truly was assigned the 12:00 to 04:00 watch. I'm pretty sure it was the coldest night in the history of Illinois. So I'm out there checking I.D.s, saluting vehicles that looked like there could be an officer in it, giving directions to Wrigley Field the Shedd Aquarium whatever. Anyway, the wind is whistling, right through that P-Coat. The moral? Don't go in the Navy. Or, wait for a graduation day in July. On the other hand my friend got this Gestapo looking black leather trench coat. You wear that thing with the P-coat under it, I think you could survive the North Pole.😊

IMO that peacoat looks pretty slim and well fitting to me! Are you actually 42" in the chest? What about waist? And this is a size 40? Does it ever feel tight with a thick sweater/layering?

Thank you! I am a size 42 chest, this peacoat by schott (740) runs big. I purchased a 40 long, and it’s got plenty of room. I’ve worn an Oxford shirt, merino sweater and sport coat, and it still fits nicely over that outfit.

The US Navy replaced their traditional pea coat in 2019 with an arguably better functioning parka, but its outerwear that anyone, including the snowplow man, might wear...not that I have anything against snowplow men, like the one who just covered up my freshly-shoveled driveway.

I actually find I wear my parka jacket more in the winter. It ends up being more convenient, as it has a hood, is waterproof, doesn’t collect dust and lint, and is single breasted. It still looks good, especially when it’s less than 10 Fahrenheit.

The Oxford shirt is from Jcrew. Regarding the peacoat, I had to size down one from my normal 42. I would recommend doing the same, although you really should try both sizes and make sure you are comfortable in the smaller size. The peacoat runs large.

Something important about Peacoats is they are designed like suits to be made to measure. Or tailored. You dont buy an off the rack peacoat and wear it. You may get lucky, but its not designed this way. Its better to buy a super cheap made to measure suit or peacoat. Than buy off the rack because its designed for you.

I’ve had great luck with Jcrew. They are thicker than Banana Republic and seem to last 2 seasons. Back in college, I also found some at thrift stores for under $10 that lasted a while.

In suit, I’m a 42 regular. I’m usually a medium in lightweight and heavy jackets. In this Peacoat, I am a 40. They make it in a long version, which I have, since the sleeves were a bit short for a winter jacket on the 40 regular.
