think he knew the sabertoth lived up in the ruin, and he originally just wanted it to kill him (since it seems he wouldnt pass the winter on his own anyway, plus with the grief on top)... until he realised from the knife that THIS was the predator that took his son, one he tracked before but never managed to find. and he did accept before that it was jus a hungry predator that tok his son and that there wasnt anything truely wrong with that... but the grief was too strong for him to just let go, hence why he quickly regrets it after dealing that killing blow

Great reaction video, you should definitely see the making of video! 3:40 I remember that theory on juvenile rexes and parents hunting together, but I really haven't heard much about it in a while, it's an interesting idea at the least, but just for clarification its just a smaller rex species called Nanuqsaurus, and I also love the small addition of the pair swan dancing in the background at 18:42. Good job keep it up :D
