Good video. I just found you and subscribed. I've used black birch twigs as a seasoning in puddings. It's excellent in combination with tapioca lemon rind and vanilla. Of course, you remove the twigs after the pudding is done. Not all shrubs with leaves in the winter are poisonous. Northern bayberry is semi-evergreen, retaining enough leaves to use as a seasoning in the winter. Other green veggies I'm sure you know that I harvest in the winter are chickweed, often growing in sheltered spots, such as sun-bathed rocks and walls, and field garlic, which sticks up through the snow. You can also pull up sassafras saplings, for tea or as a seasoning for desserts, and if you live near the seashore, there's plenty of rockweed available at low tide. Common spicebush twigs make a great tea too, and partridge berries overwinter just like Japanese barberry.

thanks for the info, I don't have a lot of experience with cooking, I usually focus on plant ID and general uses, so thanks for the info on the pudding. I'm a big fan of sassafras, I have another video on that. Also funny thing, for some reason where I am here near new haven , I almost never see partridgeberry, not exactly sure why. also good point about bayberry. Thats another one that I see planted ornamentally here but less often growing wild in the woods. I think that just a peculiarity of my specific area.

Found by coincidence you channel and immediately suscribed. It was just what I was looking for and there is not much information about foraging in Benelux area (Flanders in my case ). Thank you 🙂

A trick: you can watch movies on flixzone. I've been using it for watching a lot of movies during the lockdown.

Good detailed identification points. Barberry is a new one for me to eat. I was never tempted to eat Mountain Laurel, and now I know why!

I have mixed feelings on barberry. it's invasive but its a good winder wild edible, also the leaves are edible in the summer and don't taste too bad. The taste of the berries is not that good, but also not that bad. But I have no mixed feelings the thorns, they are brutal.

i've seen barberries!!! there's a massive bush growing right next to a little creek i often frequent (i'm trying to build a rock bridge by a little ford) although i never dared to eat them because i didn't know what it was and i'm not stupid enough to eat something i don't know.

I'm glad your not stupid enough to eat stuff that you don't know. There's more stupid people out there then you'd think. Anyways confirm your ID before you try it. you can send me a picture of the shrub if you want at eattheplanet.org@gmail.com if you want. or post it in a facebook plant id group if you have any doubts. but they are pretty easy to id so you could probably just id it on your own anyway. As mentioned in the video don't give your hopes up on the taste. Its complicated. not terrible, but not great. just edible.

Yess I’ve just started foraging in Pennsylvania and it’s nice to see some eastern plants I recognize. I saw tons of barberries today and didn’t collect them because I didn’t know what they were. I’ll collect them tomorrow and confirm the ID before I eat.

Unfortunately. You can always count on japanese barberry! Would be nice if they weren't negatively influencing native habitats. But hey I take what I can get. Especially in the winter.

When I mouse over the bottom of the video, there are some definite errors -- in transcribing, I guess: "barbary" instead of barberry, and "bitter crust" instead of bitter cress, as well as "wild raspberry" in place of green briar. (There will be NO fruit or green leaves on any wild raspberry plants in late winter.) Pennsylvania has at least three species of green briar, so scientific names would help, too. 😀
