WINTERIZING dahlias is hard work all the way around! We pulled about 10% up while keeping 90% in the ground. Oh no! What do you do?? I say go with you gut instinct. Last year we overwintered them keeping about 80% rate keeping them alive with good drainage and covering. It is completely possible to keep them in the ground as well as store them in bags or boxes under a house, basement, or even or garage. We just want to be careful they don't dry out, get eaten, or FREEZE!
Glad there are some new viewers! Thanks for supporting us with watching. Please leave a comment below and make sure to like. If you feel this video helped please share with like minded people.

This is my first year planting dahlias thanks to you!! I’m taking all your advise. I’m in the St. Louis area where we are in a zone 5. I think I will dig them up this year and divide as I only have 40 plants. We would love to host you and your family if you ever want to come our way. My husband is a police officer so you’ll be safe, LOL

Thank you! I'm also in 6B and was hoping I wouldn't have to dig them all up. I also get free woodchips so this is great!

Next spring I am going to grow dahlias,(just a home gardener that gives away bouquets). I plant to tie the stalks up in a bundle and hang them for the beneficial insects. Like those bee homes you can buy.

I'm in New Hampshire. Our zones range from 3a to 6a. Fascinating for such a tiny state, but our terrain is that diverse. Digging is mandatory up here, unless you live on the coast (6a), and some folks attempt to overwinter them. Attempt being the key word. Sometimes at this time of year we have multiple feet of snow already. This year...today was 68 degrees. Still, digging and storing is how it rolls if you want to keep your tubers. They love our environment during growing season. Good amount or rain, nice warmth but not obnoxious, nice breeze, but Hella humidity.

Thank you for sharing. I missed the information on the seeds. Can you share a little more about how many stems you take to the wholesale market? I know you drive a long distance to get there, so I imagine it's a few thousand.
@WindyBrookRidgeHomestead
@WindyBrookRidgeHomestead 3 жыл бұрын
It is usually about 2,000 stems a week that would take on minimum.

I came so close to buying a tractor this year but held off since my dad is able to bring his over to help. I think you should definitely offer a course for new farmers. This will help generate income in the off season for you. Our of my merchandise, aprons and mugs seems to sell the best so far so just FYI. I think people like them because they don't have to worry about the sizing.

Do it’s ok to mulch them in 7b? That is what it says I am technically but 15 north is 7a and 15 minutes south is 8a so I am sure we could be any of the three on any given day.

I really enjoy your channel. Just curious, how long have you been farming flowers? It amazes me in the amount of tubers you have!!! I'm trying to start a farm for a few reasons. One I love flowers and two I'm praying I will be able to make enough to keep up the 11 acres my parents blessed me with. Keep up the great work!!!

In the long run, I think you will earn more from giving the course as free content on your youtube channel. The course might bring you, new viewers, to the channel. In the end, it's how much good content your youtube channel has, that will get you viewers and thereby earnings from youtube. Many of the KZbinrs that have content about farming like yours, end up earning more on youtube than they actually do from the farming itself. "You can't eat the grass" is a good example of that. They have revealed their earnings from both farming and youtube. Next season they will be moving away from veggies and be a full-time flower farm. They started like you with a low view count and few followers. 3 years later they got 105K subscribers, and last year they earned 22.000 Dollars on youtube with just a fraction of the subscribers as they have now. So this year they will earn A LOT more from youtube. Every video will make you some earnings for years to come, since followers often watch older content they find on channels they subscribe to. Just my 2 cent.
