for your windows place a layer of bubble wrap and a layer of 6mm plastic. each acts as a inslating layer . its like $23 for a 10x 100 ft roll of plastic

Gary, after you bury the water line...put some pool noodles on the exposed lines leading into the barn. Can't have them bust during the winter.

Guys when you get more sawdust, save it to put in the trench for your water line when you bury it. Put so much sawdust in the trench then your water line then the rest of your sawdust on top of the water line. That sawdust is like insulation I've done it our water never did freeze

@jacquelinewells7575 it works, my dad had us go to a sawmill and get a truck load to put half of it in the trench then the water line and put the rest of it on top of the water line then the dirt on top of that.

It's cellulose, so good, Rvalue. I'd put vapor barrier over the top to help keep the sawdust dry. It doesn't work as well if wet

You need to cover the gypsum board. All it would take to ruin it is one good rain and some wind. Cover it with plastic or something.

Sometimes we have to think outside the box. On the inside , the number one question we played with was how to insulate cheaply and keep the cold out and the heat in. People were using cardboard cut for windows and were ever they needed a little more. One lady painted her cardboard for her windows and put designs on them. I know with building cost every penny saved can be used elsewhere. I put cardboard on my windows . i have it on one wall to hide a plumbing issue until we can do a remodel.

We just finished winter here in Australia and was 32f most days I was lucky to have just finished putting insulation batts in walls and ceilings just as winter started and made a huge difference. Great work to Gary on his work

That would be a good, cheap way to insulate them but if that’s what you want to do you might wanna go ahead and get some bought because stores like to start pulling their summer things pretty soon. Also someone above suggested covering all that stuff y’all put up with plastic because it doesn’t take much to damage it. You might already be planning on it. I know what you mean Gary, when it hits 50* that’s pretty chilly to me too. As I’ve told y’all I’m a Floridian myself so that’s chilly to us. Was wondering what y’all were doing with coats on. So glad y’all are getting ready from r winter before it hits you hard. Thanks Joe for helping out. So nice be of you. Does he have a channel too called Joe’s farm or what. My Dad collect windiws for quit while for his project ,he built another room on the back of his hugd work shop he built behind the garage ut hooked on he put hugd barn type doors that were on wheels so was big enough to drive car ir thruck threw to his work shop but behind work shop the building looked like a half of a barn he put his windows on all sides except the one wirh glass window door he put all window around it well my Dad had a tan all year long he would set in thr building do his newspaper, reading or what small projects he was making or building it was warm in there all winter long and we,d get the snow he was very smart and a great carpenter we grew veggies winter, in there also window are the key if the sun faces the right way in winter He built ard home from his thoughts and making his own plans for it when he was quit young

I really thought you were going to cover the windows with the clear ribbed plastic, like Country Cures green house. That would have allowed more light in the barn. On hinges to be raised or lowered for fresh air.

i have an old greenhouse homemade attatcche to shop on south side;;;;one green one iron to let light in the roof;;;frame with 2x4's and metal windows in between;;;added 2x2's between windows on outside and stretched plastic with staples to insulate a bit;;;screen door that gets plastic wrapped for cold months;;;I also made a solar heater from beverage cans that tops and bottoms cut out glued together in 3/4'' foam sides and bottom;;;a 12v fan powered by solar panel to help move air from collector around greenhouse;;;the solarcollector painted black mounted in one of the windows the size of the window;;;;got quite warm during the day ;;;wood stove keeps shop warm burning wood 24/7 have fan pulling air from shop to greenhouse keeps temp above freezing at night;;;if you looking for free light during the day build a frame the door size and wrap front and back with plastic and got insulation and light;;;didn't mean to write a book but I did so I shut up and thumbs up and keep em comin

Spray foam insulation is ok to use but in this instance I would opt for thick plastic vinyl or something like that to cover the foam. It would be cheaper and help protect against limbs and hail or ice storms that the foam board will take damage from.
