Zone 7b. After 25 years of normal seed starting, I tried the jug method - dill, fennel, lettuce, frisee, wheat (ornamental), 3 kinds of snapdragons, 3 kinds of petunias, marigolds, narcissus, spinach, zinnia + several more. Tremendous success and several things were earlier. I always have extra so my son built some large container for his "old man" and now they're filled with ornamental grasses, tomatoes, zinnia, marigold and giant red mustard. I give away a lot and in fact, some neighbors have come to rely on my supply each year. Good luck.

Thank you so much for this lecture. It is good to know Columbines might be late bloomers. I have three jars of them so far, so I will wait until May. I look forward to this season. Thanks again!

Can someone help clarify the difference between Opening Jug Day in Late April 1:04:52 vs Mid May 1:04:57? Is this just depending on last frost for your area?

Thank you so much for this amazingly helpful video! I am new to winter sowing and watched this over the weekend. I'm zone 5a and have a growing pile of jugs in my garage and a whole bunch of seeds ready to go. This was so helpful so I learned what type of soil to use, how to tape up the jugs with the right kind of tape, the best way to label jugs (would not have thought to add a tag INSIDE as well), and how to make an appropriate water bottle. I'm curious to learn more about what you do with all of your seedlings, esp the ones that you don't plan on adding to your garden. Thanks for sharing this video!

Just found your video. I have also watched the KZbin vodeo ls IUN Winter Sowing Gardening. Growit Buildit Winter Sowing. I recently moved out of State ( Zone 5 Upstate NY). I can not winter sow seeds this year the way I have in previous years when I lived in the eastern part of Washington State. We have been buying drinking water, so I started saving the jug so I can winter sow seeds in them this year. We have an sunny window area in this old house we are renting. I plan to sow some seeds indoors, too.

I wintersowed cabbage, leeks, a variety of onions, tomatoes, peppers and amaranth back in mid-Feb. Here in 6a we've had a bit of roller-coaster weather - some unseasonably high temps at times - extra cold at others. My cabbage, leeks and amaranth had germinated, but I'm wondering if the unseasonably warm days made them too hot - as it was around that time that they all shriveled and died. My jugs are sitting up against the front of our south facing porch - so they still get precipitation in them, but also getting the sun.Very disappointed with the death of the germinated seeds. I'd like to keep trying ... I just don't know how to proceed.

Hi! #1 reason why plants fry, watering. Despite what some sources say, you do need to water. At this point in the season you can re-sow and still be very successful. Watering can be done easily with an old jelly roll pan or plant tray that holds water. Place your containers in the tray and fill the tray. Let the mit for a while.

Instead of recycling your containers every year is there a problem with cleaning it out and saving it for next year?
@DollyFoster312 Жыл бұрын
No problem! Wash, store out of the sun and they should last 2-3 winters before they get brittle

Uncovered away from an eave is best but you will need to water a few times over the winter.

Not done this before but I'm interested. Live in Texas and right now in January we're having over 80 degree days in the north part of the state. I am thinking they would have gotten overcooked if I'd had any out this week. ? Very hard to predict here.
@hort4u5492 жыл бұрын
If you can keep your containers watered more regularly they will survive. Also you might need more vent holes in the top like I showed in the spring sowing section of the video. Hope this helps!
