Thank you so much for this tutorial! I’m going to make my first socks and wondered how do I split the skein into two so that I get two same socks. Mahalo!!!

I'm halfway through winding my yarn ready to star ( fab method btw ) I did knit some socks about 40 yrs ago on dpns. I haven't knitted anything much since then. I crochet nowadays. So this should be an interesting journey 😉

Great video! Thank you. Just finished a pair of baby socks. 8 stitches each needle. My first time. It drove me crazy. I lost stitches constantly. Well, it was Regia 4ply with stripes. I made 2 different socks, not knowing any better. I do not yet known how you knit, but I will definitely look for your instructions. Perhaps you also have a pattern for baby/kids. It is cold in Oklahoma. Not often, but if, for days. Most people have very little warm cloth and for babies you find little - made of warm wool. I just finished boots. Size 6 months. I crocheted 🧶 them…thank you again and have a good day!

Is it so that alot of yarns with gauge 20-22 stitches/ 10 cm and 4-5 mm needlies gets gauge around 30 stiches / 10 cm with 2.5 mm needles, I mean it does not need to be a very fine yarn?
@WinwickMumsocks2 жыл бұрын
No, a yarn that gets a gauge of 20-22sts/10cm is thicker - that's a DK or 8ply gauge and I'd use 3.5mm needles to knit socks with that yarn. Yarn which gives a gauge of 30sts/10cm on 2.5mm is 4ply or fingering which is thinner - if you tried to knit the thicker yarn with the smaller needles you would get a very thick fabric which might not be flexible enough for socks.

Hi, and thanks for quick answer :) I believe I only have thicker yarns then, gauge 20-22 or lower. Or very thin wool yarn, and pure wool is not good for socks I believe. Can I use some of my lower gauge yarns for socks?
@WinwickMumsocks2 жыл бұрын
@@stephenutterstrom You can knit socks with both gauges - I have a pattern for Basic 8ply (DK) Boot Socks which knit at 20sts/10cm and also for Basic 4ply Socks which knit at 30sts/10cm. You can find them both for free on my Patterns and Printables page (winwickmum.co.uk/patterns-and-printables). You can knit socks with pure wool but they may not last as long as those with a nylon content, and I would also look closely at what type of yarn it is - very soft yarns like Merino will wear through much more quickly than something that is not quite so soft. I would avoid acrylic as that might make your feet feel sweaty :) I have a section on my blog on No-Nylon yarns which you might find useful if you want to knit with pure wool.

Hello ~ I love her book, Super Socks, it's the best book on cuff-down sock knitting that I have found. One of the great things, among many, is that you get instructions for using different types of knitting needles. Either DPN's, short circular, or longer circular. In order to preserve my copy, I took the book to an office supply store and had it put into a spiral bound book, which, of course, makes the book lie flat and pages turn easily when in use. Beautifully written, clear and colorful photography every step of the sock knitting process.
