When assembling the throttle, do not screw in the first screw completely, do it about half way then do the second screw. When both are in about half way you can start tightening both screws. This will prevent cross threading the screws.
@faelwolf11778 ай бұрын
You're talking about leaving a big of play to help with alignment, not cross threading. Very good idea. When starting a screw, turn it backwards with slight pressure until you feel/hear a slight click. You have then found the thread lead, and lined up the screw thread with the threaded hole, and you won't cross thread. Old machinist's trick. And yeah, I'm an old machinist! lol

Okay, I finally got the fourth piece of my system this morning (the stick grip) and got to try it out. The system isn't perfect, but I gotta say, this stick is absolutely amazing! The first plane I flew was the L-39ZA in DCS. I did this because since 2007 until my recent retirement, I was a maintenance tech specializing in avionics at a place that specializes in L-39 maintenance and refurbishment. I have flown in an L-39 many, many times and have some stick time in this aircraft. Even though the Winwing stick is not FFB which would be appropriate since the L-39 is all manual control surfaces (no hydraulics), it still felt spot on. There is absolutely no slop in the stick, once it is calibrated, the stick returns to the exact same position every time. And the resistance increases proportionally as you move away from center. It just feels right. Can't say enough good about it. I like the way all the hats and most of the buttons feel and it seems to be ergonomically sound. I got the F-16 grip cuz it has one more hat than the F-18 grip. I also ordered the add-on module for the rumble motor although I haven't received it yet. I got that because the stock F-16 stick doesn't have an X/Y axis which I use a lot for strafing in space sims. Anyway, if I had to say a negative about the stick and base, it would be the way the second stage of the trigger feels. Instead of a switch clicking, it feels more like a cam overcoming a spring or something. It just feels weird to me, but really not much of an issue. I also love the throttle and base. I will be adding the finger lift kit for afterburner and cut off, however I have a bit more dislikes on that. To me, the arrangement of the knobs and switches feels kind of haphazard. Like, we have a couple switches here but we need one more so lets stick it in here between these knobs. Also, and this is just personal preference, all of the knobs and switches are pre-labeled to mostly FA-18 nomenclature. Now, I love the DCS Hornet and I fly it frequently. But I fly many other aircraft and spacecraft as well. I would have preferred more generic labels on the thing. I have also noticed that the hat switches are a good deal stiffer on the throttle than they are on the stick. Again, not much of an issue. Overall so far I would probably give it a 9 out of 10.
@DenialDan Жыл бұрын
That's awesome! Hope you enjoy retirement! Overall the stick is pretty awesome for the price range compared ro some of the others out there for similar cost. I hope you enjoy it as much as I have! 6 or so months and still no issues yet (finger lift for the f-18 throttle should've been slightly narrower as it rubs slightly on the throttle levers but the convince of more efficient throttle management is nice) Also After Burner can be tweaked in the application for where you want your AB to kick in so they're programming is definitely nice compared so some of the other brands. If you want to fly DCS with me some time just ask!

I have a VKB Gladiator, used it for about 10 months and it's been very, very solid. Depending on sale prices at any given moment, it's a great lower priced option to Winwing and Virpil.... really nails the "midrange" sweet spot both in price and quality. It's roughly 1/2 the cost of a comparable Winwing and 1/3rd the cost of a Virpil. Of course, it is primarily plastic internals where the higher end stuff is machined metal, but these appear to be very high quality plastic internals. Much better than an entry level T16000 or X52/X52 Pro. I'm about to upgrade to a Orion2 setup and sell my VKB to a friend, but I have absolutely no complaints with it so far... I'm just an old man who spends too much money on his hobbies.

@@control_the_pet_population I considered getting the VKB gladiator but wanted the large number buttons and switches. I know they do make some lower end throttle quadrants that are more on par with a commercial flight sim controls but definitely good bang for the buck I imagine
@control_the_pet_population Жыл бұрын
@@DenialDan I didn't bother with VKB for the throttle, grabbed a TCWS throttle and eventually did the mod to replace the stock rails. Much like the VKB Gladiator is for sticks, the TCWS is probably the best bang for the buck in the "midrange" throttle segment... but it's definitely more "plasticky" and less substantial feeling than the Gladiator stick. But for people who want to stay in that midrange budget zone, the Gladiator + TCWS is probably the best overall HOTAS solution for under $300. I would likely have kept it for the foreseeable future. While the setup has some quirks/limitations, it does everything I need... but then Winwing goes off and has a sale and I couldn't resist.

Good job with the review man! Do you think the finger lift device is strictly necessary? Is it still good?
@DenialDan Жыл бұрын
I used the throttle without the finger lift and you don't technically need it. If it's DCS you would just not set the throttle shutoff. You can also tune the throttle settings in the sim app pro to make the detents (if you wanted to use the finger lift) to be exactly where you want AB to engage. You by no means need the finger lift and I had no issues with accidently shutting off the engine (the full back position acts sort of like a button so you just wouldn't bind it (engine shutoff). Hope that helps! Let me know if you have any other questions!

Hey, I would like to order the Orion 2 throttle with the F18 grip. Basically the exact same unit that you have. Could you confirm that the detents on the throttle are fully removable to have no detents at all trough out the entire travel of the throttle? As I've seen in your video it looks like that but it is very important for me so I want confirmation :D Beside the F18 I fly other jets, but WW2 warbirds also and I fly GA in MSFS too, so the way I want it is to disable every single detent for warbirds and MSFS and have the detents when I fly jets in DCS. Also, what do you think about the build quality and the smoothness of the throttles? Is it still working well with no problem? And no changes in the smoothness of the throttle?
@DenialDan Жыл бұрын
The one I ordered doesn't have detents. There is an add-on module for the finger lift with adjustable detents that can be added/removed via 2 screws. As for the smoothness, you can make it basically have no resistance and have the throttle fall back/fourth under its own weight or you can make it very stiff by adjusting the tension screws. I think the quality is incredibly good and I haven't had any issues. The only thing I would keep in mind is you'd have to tweak the setting in simapp if you plan on playing IL2 as it isn't "numerous button" friendly but I think it is a great stick!

Virpil is gonna run $600 USD for both stick and throttle (not sure if shipping is included in that) vs WinWing being $400 for an Orion 2 ($470 with shipping all said and done). So it really just depends on hw to want your buttons and levers to be laid out. I had a plastic piece break (only an issue with the fingerlift) but they have added a support to the weak area. If you google "winwing lever break" should be the first image is what broke. Just a weak spot but again I gave them feed back and they added support to the weak spot.other than that no the HOTAS has been great

@harksgaming7455 yeah that'd be pretty cool! I was bouncing back and fourth I just settled on price. I know some prices changed around but they just released the f15 throttle so might be able to get the bundle cheapest now

Can the bottom base plate be removed from the joystick in order to install the joystick onto a drop desk mount?

The base plate has some lips on either end where little screws go through for mounting to base plate. Same holes are used for the suction cups

Quick question does this stick have progressive resistance? Also is the trigger and throttle handle metal. Thanks in advance.
@DenialDan Жыл бұрын
Yes there is a bit of progressive resistance that is most noticeable when you get closer to the full range of motion (I do beleive they also have a spring/dampening kit you can add if you don't feel it as stiff enough) but is stiff enough in my opinion. The trigger is a sturdy plastic and the throttle grip is metal

a couple last questions, does the trigger feel solid and satisfying to press, or plasticky? As this is something that matters to me. Also does the stick have a dead zone? Does it feel smooth? Thank you so much!

@Rc Workshop the first stage is smooth with a solid click when you engage the second stage of the trigger. And I have not experience a dead zone so far while using the stick

how well would these work with other flight sims/games?
@DenialDan11 ай бұрын
As long as the games settings allow you to tune your axis curve if not might be a little sensative, but pretty good. Some games might require you to change a setting the sim app to make the device read as 4 seperate devices in order to get all of the buttons to function (I think IL-2 is that way)

Nice review - I ordered mine and missed the fact that it doesn't have a z-axis, and I do not want rudder pedals - so it's just sitting there collecting dust, if anyone has an idea os a workaround other than the rudder path please leave comments. I don't mind putting a warthug grip on the winwing base if possible to get my z-axis.

HOTAS is still going strong and I have had any issues with it. I did aquire the finger lift and I like it but the finger lift could've been a little narrower as it rubs the throttle lever in between a little but the HOTAS as a whole is awesome and reliable in the 6 months or so that I've had it

Roll and yaw axis. I'd give a little curve to it so you can can just a little more control with slight stick movements. As far as buttons, that one will be personal preference.
@DenialDan2 жыл бұрын
On war thunder I'd go through and clear pretty much almost all of the bindings and set them manually. I think war thunder tries to prebind things and it makes some weird working hiccups if not but that may have just been me accidently pressing something. In terms of DCS, I would go in the mission editor and plop a plane down. Go through some of the tutorials the game presents and then mess with it yourself in the mission editor. There's also quite a few tutorials regarding dcs module setup with a bunch of key bindings needed. At some point I'd like to make a really simplified setup video that's is short and to the point

I'm having shipment issues and its really annoying. When im in checkout, it says that the postal code doesn't match their recommended postal code, and it won't let me change it. Do you have any ideas?

You may need to add the +4 code after your zip code. I had an issue but mine was with the district section (classifies as county I believe). I got around my issue by creating an address in the address book on the top right of the shipping details window. Let me know if that works.

is it compatible with FS2020?
@DenialDan2 жыл бұрын
I don't personally own FS2020 so would be hard for me to say. The winwing has some programming in their sim app that you can mess with settings (breaking the hotas from one system to being read as 4 seperate usb devices) depending on the games ability to register how many buttons there are so I'd imagine it would function fine. I'd look to reddit or some forums on compatibility. I don't suspect there would be an issue but you may have to play with the settings.
