Winx Club but make it ✨high fantasy✨ | Redesigning the Fairies to look more Magical (CSP Speedpaint)

As a long-time enjoyer of both Winx Club and character design it really was only a matter of time until I tried my hand at playing with their iconic fairy designs. This time it was to give them a little high fantasy twist!
This was actually meant to be done way earlier but I got buried by exams and then caught the flue right after so rip my voice and recording. Either way it's done now and I hope you enjoy!

@@yenovefa from what I know they were originally described as bird with a human face and then somewhere along the way they turned into fish woman in the more modern retalings 😁 I've heard of a myth that tried to explain this change by saying that the Sirens once tried to challenge the greek muses to a singing competition, and when they lost they were turn into fish as a punishment

In The Odyssey they are described as creatures with the upper body (from the chest to the head) being beautiful women who's singing can ensnare sailors with the lower half being bird-like with sharp talons that can render flesh from bone. Also, the lure of the siren is promising your deepest desires... not sex. IT COULD be sex but it can also be fame, glory, food, etc.

the bird thing for Musa makes total sense! Music in high fantasy makes me think of sirens, like your friend mentioned. AND sirens used to be associated with a more harpy-like design as opposed to the mermaid design we know now

First of all, I've never understood the fascination with drawing men and women like they're sexually dichotomous. And on a completely related note, I adore that your designs are sprinkled with adrogynous features. It's very human. It's very visually interesting. It's nice that not every aspect of their design has to contribute to their femininity. Second of all, the fantasy elements slap. Third of all, which is just a reiteration of second of all, not even Gordan Ramsey could complain about the flavor. And Fourth, I just... love. That's it. Good soup.

They're not even necessarily androgynous (though I wouldn't complain, trust me on that front), they just... look like people. Plenty of people don't look like the walking embodiment of exclusively feminine or masculine traits, and it's nice to see that reflected in art... and then, also, have it be wild and whimsical? I have never, not once, understood the points I try to make. Excuse me.

I think that's a common thing in "girl shows," and it's pretty much one of the few occassions you can see hyperfeminine, powerful women in the media. Usually in YA and adult stuff, traits traditionally associated with masculinity are associated with female characters.

Love all the designs and the more monsterous elements you gave them. And as the resident winx opsessed indivdual, the main reason the Great Dagon and Dragon Flame are represented as an easten style dragon is because most western interpretations of dragons are big scary monsters that need to be hunted due to the general evil nature, whilst easten dragons are often considered as gods and treated like protecters who are just generaly very nice in nature, however due to their god like nature they also punnish those who deserve it, much like how the Great Dragon was a god that created the entire magical universe but also has the power (through bloom) to punnish those like the trix for the evil actions. I do agree it is strange to have Sparks/Domino and Bloom not be Asian inspired but as the show was intended for Italian audiences and the fact that Bloom is based on the creators wife, I imagine that was why they chose to have her be a white character. So at least personaly I think redesigns of bloom should have her as an asian character but also i can't deny that western style wings look so cool. Again love the designs, the winx fan in me just needs to info dump about the show lol, lemme know if anything in this comment didn't make sense :]

I used to be a big dragon fan when I was a kid, so in my brain all dragons are friend shaped, even the ones from European myths that are supposed to be evil and dangerous, so I totally missed that connection there. @@alexschofield8085 depends on the specific places and myths/religions. Like in most chinese dipictions of dragons they're water spirits, but even then some water based dragons would breathe fire, typically as a punishment but not always like what i belive is called the torch dragon, was often considered a solar god and creates warm winds by breathing. The idea of water dragons is acually explored in season 3 with the water stars, so in my opinion its cool to have both varients and also i think winx club might've just felt having an easten dragon would be better creativly but thought more western audinces would recognise a fire breathing dragon, so its possible they weren't even thinkng about myths like the torch dragon or the fire dragon from the zodiac but councidently they're not pulling the idea out of nowhere lol i would also have to look into it but i belive like japan and veitnam only have water based dragons and overall most known and more common interpretations of easten dragons are them being water gods so its acually kinda hard to find any fire realated myths online apart from the zodiac one

Honestly, my favorite would have to be, hands down, Stella. I mean, other than Flora and Bloom whose powers are more than obvious due to the vines and flames that you've added, I feel like Stella's shine through her design quite a lot. If I were to not know anything about Winx Club and I were to look at your reimagination of Stella, I would most likely think that her powers had to be light-based. I like how her design is also not overly complicated or frilly despite the shawl and the added jewelry, I honestly think that this outfit is one that could be transitioned into the cartoon and would still pass for a basic fairy form on someone else.

Just want to say that your redesign Stella is awesome and looks like some sort of Amazon warrior who could totally kick someone's ass (the initial sketch kind of threw me, since I'm used to Stella reading like the most waif-like of the lot to my eye, and you drew her like an absolute _tank,_ in a delightful way). She has a great vibe of a Dungeons & Dragons-type paladin, as I got a vibe of her torso piece beneath the translucent layers being something like a breastplate, rather than fabric, and a strong feeling of a warrior in her stance and the way she held the staff. I was never really a Stella fan back when I watched the show, but I'm totally down for warrior queen Stella.

I love your vision of them design wise ! Also, the mix between "masculine" and "feminine" traits is so refreshing and makes it interesting. It is confusing (in a good kind of way) at first. Society and media pushes such controlled and precise beauty standards that on TV etc you only have specific kinds of bodies/physical aspects that are well represented. @@chromaimp1315 Sadly, the designers can't really go without the conventional designs most of the time bc they are not in charge of the art in general. The company that hires them most of the time just wants simplicity and easy to understand characters so they can market it to a bigger public. Its sad to see how talented people can't do more interesting characters not because they didn't want to but because the people that pays them don't want to get into controversy with the older conservative people who doesn't even watch the shows.

Just an FYI, Aisha is her official name. Layla something that happened with a dubbing company called 4Kids, and other translations derived the name from it. Aisha, however, was her name in the original Italian version and later seasons have since changed it so(though that probably caused some confusion to international fans) But I also wanted to suggest, that Musa could be a bard with a bird theme! This mostly to do with the siren thing you've already mentioned, but also because of her other musical talents, both instrumental and vocal. Plus, Lisa Fevral has done several videos on the Winx Club franchise, and in one of them where she restyles the live-action show(along with possible fairy outfits), she found that Musa's bottoms in her Enchantix form are in fact, _minstrel_ shorts! So the idea was already in the show anyway

While I would keep the blend of fantasy and futuristic scifi in a live action adaptation or animated show of Winx, I would make the fairies more fantastical in terms of physical appearance. Get really creative with the character designs to show that they're not just humans with wings and magic but this whole different magical race.

Those feel like a darker more grown-up version of Winx club (that Netflix is truly failing at), also it looks like it could be their ultimate transformation, like the best/most powerful they could be, principally Bloom. I love you kept some of the original design and colour! It's amazing work!

The masc features threw me at first. I thought maybe you were making drag versions. The designs are amazing and I love the breakdowns of their color palettes. Techna besides a Tech Wizard, could also be portrayed as an Artificer. Someone that create stuff, in d&d usually both mechanically and with magic. Usually with medieval high fantasy people go straight to Steam Punk, but can be anything you want.

This video was absolutely incredible and a delight to watch. It was also my first video from your channel and really enjoyed how you incorporated the elements, like the original design of each Winx Club fairy, color schemes,as well as their signature powers, while giving them more of the fantasy vibe. Really enjoyed how you made each design. Design wise I love Floras and Blooms the most because I love the Dragon aspects you put in there it's such a great way to interpret and also highlight the dragon Flame cause it is a big part of her nevertheless but never was considered to be put into her later designs in the show sadly although every other one had some kind of their powers worked in their designs. Flora's I love just simply because I feel like it's been the most close to the first original transformation design which I think was a very good choice as to the fact that her original design was very beautiful and fit her personality and her powers. It's like a more grown up, elegant and detailed version of it. Also biiig YES to the diverse body types! Even though I loved the body types of the girls when I was younger (which actually is not a good thing tbh 😅) I am so in LOVE with the fact that they don't have all the exact same body types (just thin, tall and curves on the u know places) its much more beautiful and just realistic tbh All in All I love all of them so much! Also Musa you did really well especially because of the siren thing cause if remember correctly in the Greek mythology sirens were originally portrayed as women with strong bird aspects actually.

Not a fan of your artstyle, but designs and ideas are amazing! I think Aisha(or Leyla) should be an undine though. In my opinion bird theme fits Musa pretty well: as someone already said, in some mythologies sirens are birds. Overall, I would love if that was used in Netflix series or any series because it really is good.

The two best redesigns for me have to be Aisha and Musa! Mainly because of favoritism, but also because they have a good amount of feminine (soft) traits and masculine (hard) traits balanced. Just a touch of softness here and there. The other redesigns just look like you made them into masculine men with pretty outfits as opposed to just masculine women, androgynous women, etc etc. Nothing wrong with that, it’s just a little boring and uniform. Similar to how in the original they all looked traditionally feminine. No masculinity made their designs a little boring, and it’s the same with no femininity. ( I don’t consider clothes/accessories masculine or feminine. I’m strictly speaking about the character’s body and face, as well as linework.)

Love these designs! Tecna could possibly also be a cyborg being more sci-fi than high fantasy. But I think that might lose the high fantasy aspect, Wizard Tecna still looks great!

For once I can't choose who is my favorite. They all stand out from each other really well and have their own uniqueness to their designs that I just love. Usually I would go with both Techna and Musa and while I love their designs I think I like Bloom's and Flora's more.

I love these designs more than I loved Winx Club as a kid! Possibly because they're all amaizing and I love fantasy with a passion! My favourite of your designs is actually Musa, which surprised me, because I'm generally not a fan of birds, or bird-like people in fantasy. It makes me want to draw birds as more than just background decor, for the very first time.

I'm just sad about the deyassification. The removing of the hyper-femininity to showcase the high fantasy aesthetic really proves how deeply male-dominated said aesthetic is. Anyone who's ever been hyper-feminine in a high fantasy game/rp knows of the bullying that comes with it..

If I would design Tecnha in an high fantasy setting, I would make her a steampunk cyborg wizard. I would really emphasize her uniqueness in the setting. Also, your musa looks like an harpy.

Since Bloom’s power revolves around the Dragon’s FLAME, it doesn’t makes sense to have an eastern dragon. They are associated with rain and can’t spit fire.
